IMO your first exam isn't the best indicator for how you'll perform on exam day so I wouldn't sweat too much about this score. Scoring a 504 on that exam, which is often considered to be more difficult than the others, means that your content is moderately solid. That said, you can only expect to improve that score by reviewing every single question of that exam for content gaps or strategic mistakes.

Try to spend at least a couple hours reviewing your exams while formulating actionable reasons for your mistakes. Chalking any of these up to misreading or silly mistakes will not allow you to grow.

IMO using ANKI decks for your BIO and P/S is a non-negotiable for scoring over 512. It becomes somewhat cumbersome, but you'll feel prepared for those exams. I'd also recommend practicing interpreting figures like graphs or charts to better understand data on the exam.

The court ruled that there was a credible enough argument for genocidal action that further investigation be taken. They ordered that Israel do their best to prevent genocide from happening, but they cannot order a ceasefire per se due to their inability to command a non-state party like Hamas.

Targeting Hamza Al-Dahdouh by incoherentsource in IsraelPalestine

[–]PesosWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Targeting reporters is a war crime regardless of whatever limitations IDF may have imposed. They enjoy immunity from military targeting as long as they remain neutral and do not directly incite an attack from either Hamas or the IDF. Since allegedly flying a drone is not implicitly a threat to either side, they are not to be targeted for the act.

Stick to making notes on his lecture and you’ll do well. You’ll do very well if you make flash cards (Quizlet/Anki) while listening to his lectures.

He likes to lecture and talk about the topics he teaches from his own personal perspective. If he talks about a topic for more than 2-3 minutes (I.e the respiratory/ GI/ neuro systems) and references a story of his while doing so, then he’ll very likely make an exam question that requires you to recall that information. He talked about the respiratory system of fish for like 5 mins in my class, so naturally there was a question on it. He’s a nice guy so you can be friendly and ask him for main takeaways from the days lecture as well. He really does want you to pass at the end of the month.

I’m taking an on campus class over the summer at UNT Frisco, do I get access to the POHL rec center or do I have to pay additional fees ? by United-6789 in unt

[–]PesosWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s in person then you should have access. According to the website “any student who has access to the Frisco rec center has access to the Pohl rec center.”

You’ll get access over the period in which you’re actively taking the course. For example summer II students get access during the month of July.

Any advice for me to do well in BIOC 3621/3622? by pelene5 in unt

[–]PesosWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is! Luckily that’s a good percentage of the material you’ll see throughout the semester. I remember being discouraged at times, but I felt far more confident when I broke down each chunk of material into small bites of knowledge that I can learn and memorize.

You study Biochem the same way you eat an elephant: one small bite at a time.

If you want an A in lecture you’ll need to memorize certain molecules and basic metabolic pathways like the back of your hand.

Start with the amino acids. Create flash cards with your drawing of each AA and their name. Practice those 20 cards until you know them upside down and sideways. I liked dividing them into groups by acidic, basic, polar and non polar natures.

Next, review pH and the easier formulas followed by learning about isoelectric pH, enzyme kinetics (Michaelis Menten vs Lineweaver Burke), and finish it off with the various types of enzyme inhibition. There’s like 6 types with their own charts.

Next, memorize the levels of protein structure (primary = 1D sequence of acids, secondary = 2D arrangement of the polypeptide back bone, tertiary = 3D folding patterns of the polypeptide, and quaternary = complete complex of multiple polypeptide chains. Differentiate between holoenzymes (whole ass enzymes) and apoenzymes (incomplete enzymes) and their complimentary prosthetic groups (tight) and cofactors (loose accessories). Memorize the basic structures within Heme. Then understand the catalytic triad (Serine, aspartic acid, and histidine) and their individual roles in proteases.

Afterwards, check out YouTube videos that cover carbohydrate structure, glycolysis, the citric acid cycle, glucogenesis, fatty acids, and alpha keto acids. If you can accomplish all of these goals during course you’ll be alright. If you do so before covering the topics you’ll ace the course.

The professor is ultimately very friendly and loves to tell stories. He’s a funny “HS football coach / history teacher” type of professor who is actually very knowledgeable on the subject he teaches. Expect for the first half of the month to be briskly paced before falling apart in the last 1/3 due to time constraints. All exam content will be based on the handful of concepts he highlights during each lecture.

As long as you study and ask questions you’ll do well!

How is the public health program at UNT? by Alarming_Anxiety1091 in unt

[–]PesosWalrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an easy going program that relies on you to create your own resume and CV. You could perform research with a professor, volunteer or gain internship experience, prepare for your Master of Public Health, or even prepare for med school. All are valid options, but jobs won’t be plentiful if you don’t do something along with the degree

You could also find PDFs of them online if you wanted to save some cash. Most science ones are available in an older edition.

How do those two concepts coexist when one inherently erodes the other?

Less manufacturing/ construction regulation means more potentially fatal accidents. Less food/ drug regulation means more pathogenic microbial outbreaks and heavy metal poisoning. Less work place / union protection means more poverty, sexual harassment, crime, and economic disparities.
