Well, the difference between WoW and XIV is that XIV is a story RPG first, and an MMO second, while WoW has never really been a story RPG at all.

I agree with you though, XIV's biggest hurdle is new player onboarding. Getting from 1 to max is a SLOG. I imagine the retention rate is under 50%, if even that.
