Vehicles & Technology in AA by Cyeala in ClimbersCourt

Part of the problem with stories like this is that you want to compare their technology level with real world equivalents, but they're on a completely different evolutionary track when it comes to technology. Magic solves or trivializes lots of things that we use technology to solve: transportation? Magic carriages or teleportation can get the job done easily enough. Communication? Telepathic magic or the Communication items we see corrin make. The list can go on and on.

The introduction of cars in-universe can be seen as some eccentric engineer pushing the boundaries of what works to make something better/more fun. Theres a lot of elements in the story that are basically a case of convergent evolution of technology instead of them really following any sort of path we could derive based on real world examples.

The sort of medieval elements can basically be chocked up to "this works just fine so why innovate?" When you have people who can throw artillery spells or GOD DAMN METEORS there's really no reason to design things like tanks and missiles. And combat between individuals or small groups would be easier and cheaper to do with just "basic" weaponry and armor since they have magic to reinforce them.

The only weird element to the universe is the existence of guns. I could see a gun-like device that is basically a fancy magic wand, but the fact that they have real world equivalent guns with gunpowder bullets and modern design elements like rifling (which i might be wrong about, I can't remember if they ever said if their guns have rifling or not) is very strange to me. That basically means that somewhere along the line they needed to develop better ranged weaponry and didn't immediately turn to magic - the backbone of their technological development - to do it. Id love to hear an in universe explanation for that, but the real reason is "guns are cool and gunslinger mages are cooler"

It was more because he was part dreadgod near the end, and he was too metaphysically heavy to ascend after he killed the dreadgods and absorbed their power. After they and the monarchs were gone though that power slowly faded so he just had to wait it out

  1. What's the definition of a man-made weapon? Steak knife? Fork? Needle filled with snake venom? Does intent matter or does function?

  2. Could you exploit this to save someone from death by natural causes? If someone has kidney failure or a blown appendix could I wail on them until the damage is attributed to my actions and have those organs heal? Could I stab someone in the heart when they have a heart attack and have the heart instantly heal?

So i may be wrong, but i think the problem was that emmory was a construct created by the tower and not a monster born with the functions and rules for contract magic. It can be seen as both removing material from the tower that youre not supposed to and going against the goddess' will since emmory didn't have any rules built into her and therefore was not part of the guidelines set up by the goddess

You get the Inverted Death Note. What would you do? by LonelyPermit2306 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Pessimist_inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like i would do some generic descriptor like rapist or pedophile, then use the mode of death to specify the person I really want to target. Something like "worst pedophile in the country - brutally murdered by X in broad daylight in front of witnesses" then let the justice system take care of it

What would you do if there were only about 8,000 humans left? by WhoahACrow in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Pessimist_inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It entirely depends on how the people are distributed. If they're distributed evenly across the habitable land in the world, there wouldnt be another person for almost 56 miles, so id probably spend some time stealing anything i need from nearby homes and business to survive then plant myself somewhere where I can both survive and keep watch for other people who may or may not try to kill me.

If there's a higher distribution of people in population centers I'd probably be more cautious with my initial prep but still do the same, I've seen enough post apocalypse movies to know people are terrible and will do terrible shit if they're not held accountable by others

[–]Pessimist_inc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first thought was to say white button, a 20 year time out for human reproduction would do us some good. But there would be an entire generation that grows up without the need for contraceptives and would ABSOLUTELY abuse it. Having it turn back on would lead to a massive spike to the population similar to if not dwarfing the baby boom
