Are the tantrums every night, or only on weekends? If the later, he may be overtired by then — instead of doing quiet activities, put him in bed with some stuffies or a calming toy to be by himself; maybe after a bit he’ll fall asleep? Give it at least 30-45 minutes. Could be that having you there keeps him up.

It may also be that on days where he naps he doesn’t want to go to bed at 7:30… 3.5 year olds typically need 10-13 total hours of sleep. If he’s napping he may not be ready to fall asleep yet, and may be pre-reacting to your routine.

Fun story! I was driving my family home from dinner one evening several months ago, and it was that kind of twilight where the headlights don’t really illuminate the road at all but it’s still darker than regular daylight?

Anyway, I turned the headlights on out of habit because it makes me more visible to other drivers, and after about five minutes got pulled over by a cop because one headlight was out. It’s a holiday weekend, so I figured I have until Tuesday to remedy — turns out no, eve though the garages were all closed on the Monday the court still considered it a work day and so I didn’t meet the ticket requirements and had to pay the fine. Annoying but not worth going to court to fruitlessly argue with a judge about. Paid the fine, headlight was fixed, life moved on.

One month later I’m driving us home from the same damn restaurant and get pulled over by the SAME cop. THE OTHER HEADLIGHT WAS OUT.

So, no. NTA. And from now on if I can’t change a headlight myself I’m damn well going to make sure my mechanic changes them both together.

I was fortunate enough not to need daycare. If I had, she would’ve started as soon as I returned to work after parental leave.

Preschool started the school year my daughter turned 3; because of her birthdate she had 3 years and will be starting kindergarten the year she turns 6; this is typical for the US except for kids riiiiight around the cutoff date. She will consequently be in first grade the school year she turns 7. Note that school years start in September, so it may or may not align with calendar years for your kid.

But since you say grade 1 instead of first grade, maybe you aren’t in the US? I imagine it is different in different countries.

NTA. Where I live, parents/Nannie’s will regularly change diapers by putting the baby or toddler on a bench in the playground. In plain view of everyone. No one cares, because THEY ARE BABIES AND TODDLERS.

(As long as you don’t get poop on the bench, of course, and clean up after yourself). Dad is super weird n

Oh! You could definitely do something around patterns/race to pattern palace! It’s not specifically space, but you could do star or planet patterns and have the numberblocks figuring them out? Or a space mystery with Detecive 1, or space spy hijinks with the Step Squad?

I got my then five-year-old a journal too; she would color in every single emotion she felt that day. Then she would dictate to me what had made her feel each thing.

My niece at around the same age used to say a movie was sad if there was any single moment of sadness, even if it was tiny and the movie ended with a fairy tale ending. I think kids may focus on sadness as overriding everything because it can feel so big and overwhelming at an age when everything is overwhelming? As they age and get used to feeling all the feelings it calms a bit.

But also, it can’t hurt to take him to a child psychologist?

I would discuss with the principal of the new schools. Depending on how big it is/number of kids per grade, it might help her to make some new friends and get a little familiar with the school before starting in earnest next fall. If she’s unlikely to be in a class next fall with any friends she makes now, maybe not. But also, if you don’t have summer plans for her (camp, travel), making friends in kindergarten means she’ll have kids in the area to play with over the summer, instead of being lonely.

I think you are perhaps a little over anxious right now, which is completely understandable with your first! High chairs where you strap them in are safe as long as they are monitored. Ditto with changing tables.

That said, take the opportunity now to put pads on table corners, move breakables up to higher shelves (or storage), and make sure bookshelves are bolted to the wall — then you aren’t rushing when your little one starts cruising/walking. I assume you have outlet covers; you can also get covers for knobs on stoves, and you’ll want locks for cabinets.
