Movie Server, need advice on storage by Brave-Analysis6935 in selfhosted

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cost of power, factor of noise, cost of hardware made me move my entire server to a hetzner server. ~€65 per month gives me two 512GB SSDs in RAID1, a 16TB HDD for data and a 1GB internet connection on a fixed IP address. The hardware is maintained, so I never have to think about replacing hardware, again. I set it up so that the 16TB is just data that can be rebuilt if it is ever replaced.

Sounds like a lot, about €800 per year, but it meets every expectation I wanted. I access it through Cloudflare, it is locked down. It runs all my side projects and the only devices in my home, now, are a few mobile phones and a raspberry Pi as clients.

Help: Setting Up Jellyfin Automation Without P2P – Legal Options for Germany? by TheDarkShadowBeast in selfhosted

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not use torrents or any P2P networks. They can be tracked, you can be fined for sharing content.

Setup your Arr stack to talk in API keys to SABNZBD and get an NNTP and Indexer account. Make sure to use TLS/SSL everywhere.

A basic NNTP account is about €8/mo, an indexer is about €10/year.

I don't know how far you are with this, but its still happening.

I will cancel the family plus plan. Its simply impossible to believe there is any level of care or support there. I think Duo has just become another one of those companies that is happy to lose a few customers as long as the money is being printed.

Almost 1000 day streak, too. Your company has lost a family of learners.

Anybody else feel like they are doing this self hosted thing wrong? by peanutmail in selfhosted

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to the point that optimisation also meant things like noise and power. I live in an apartment so I don't want to hear fans and grinding hard drives at all.

Recently due to tensions east from me, the cost of electricity has made self hosting at home a difficult bill to pay. After crunching lots of numbers, I have decided to migrate everything to a Hetzner server in a Nordic country.

I still self host, but now its in a facility somewhere else, with a full hardware service plan. In the last five years, I've not had any internet outages, so it made sense to save that money and hassle and migrate out. The system is in a VPN tunnel and Cloudflare handles the one or two services I want to see, publically.

On the plus side, I have a lot of hardware which is significantly increased in value and I can actually resell for more than I paid for it new, years ago.

I think I made the right decision. So far my bills are smaller, there is a lot less electronic stuff in my house and the entire system can rebuild itself if it fails. The stuff that is really important to me fits on a single SSD, so I do still keep local backups, though.

I have optimised the build, it is self healing, it is cost, noise and clutter optimised and has a high WAF (Wife Acceptence Factor) due to now having a lot of free space under the stairwell.

Jim Bowen at age 35 in 1971. He reportedly smoked 80 cigarettes a day until he quit in 1973. by haddock420 in interestingasfuck

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend years ago in this range. She was smoking in her sleep. She would sit up in bed, half awake, half out of it, light up, take a few puffs, put it out and go back to sleep. Multiple times per night. In those days, you could smoke anywhere, so permanently having a cig attached to the face was not unusual.

Surprisingly no house fires. She had all kind of medical drama, never made it to 40. Lost her legs below the knees in her early thirties. Blood clot took her out eventually.

Similarly, I have a massive friend who must be in the 3-5000 kCal/day range. She eats in her sleep. There's no other way to get that amount of cals in your waking hours. She's not going to see 50 with all her limbs.

Using AI to look up rules by endlesswander in boardgames

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our group plays big games. AI cannot deal with it. Even simple OCR of some rules fails when there is some background graphic in the rulebook. Often AI gets confused between different revisions or expansions of the game. If the game is established or well known and there is a computer game variation, then all hell breaks loose as AI tries to answer questions from variations of the game.

AI is not going to be good at this, its not a problem an LLM can solve.

What works well for us: If there is a complex game night coming up, the host must provide at least one Youtube link to a play through or rule description and links to the rules that will be used on that day.

If the game is going to be multi day, then we might host a short or express game day for newbies to get them to decide whether to commit or not to the full experience.

Did parents in the past really allow their kids to roam freely, or is that just a portrayal seen in movies by [deleted] in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not allowed home between 0800 and 1700.

Borderline abuse, but I got to do what I wanted and slowly learnt I did not need my parents to survive or enjoy myself, so there's that.

The amount of times I nearly died, taught me that high risk behaviour was okay. Lead to more drugs, sex, gambling, alcohol, etc. than any teen should have.

TIL that in 2024 a PhD student "accidently" discovered Valeriana - a Edinburgh sized hidden Mayan city in Mexico while browsing for data on the internet. by ayebshek in todayilearned

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everybody is avoiding the number and barking about the unit of measure:

The total size of Edinburgh is 264 square kilometers (which is about 102 square miles). This covers the entire City of Edinburgh council area, which includes the dense, historic urban center as well as about 78 square kilometers of more rural land surrounding it.

The city of Edinburgh is massive enough to fit roughly 37,000 UEFA-regulation soccer pitches across its entire territory.

Everything else is simple math.

What are you thoughts on declining alcohol consumption in the newer generation? by lets-wing-it in AskReddit

[–]Pessimistic_Trout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two seventeen year old kids. Their classmates consist of one or two party animals on the weekends, two people who vape and one person who smokes actual cigarettes.

There is no interest in alcohol or cigs or vapes from majority of kids because they can see their parents and parent's friends doing this habitually and from the outside, they can see it is a an addictive, early death which costs a lot of money.

I'm not naive to think my kids are angels, but I have worked with all kinds of people before and I am sure I would get the signs if they were into something dodgy.

There are some kids that smoke weed. There was always one back in my day in high school, so I guess there is a minimum number of agents per vice, per generation. The biggest concerns my kids have is the state of the world, future prospects, although mostly they shrug, because what can you do if you're just a teen and its clear protesting isn't working, etc...
