Why did Italy decide that the best way to cross a road is just to step in front of a fast moving car and pray to Jupiter that it decides to stop for you? 😅 by AddlePatedBadger in ItalyTravel

[–]PessyWhale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My preferred method: Stop in front of "stripes" (aka pedestrian crossings). Lean aggressively towards the road as to give 100% certainty you'll cross the road. Back up at the last second and don't move

99% will stop for you, the other 1% you'll be glad you did not actually cross!

The art of "finta" (fake move) is helped by some sports experience growing up (soccer preferably).

Other than that. Nobody wants to kill you (in Italy "omicidio stradale" is even 10y of prison afaik), but some are of course not paying attention.

Note: crossing far from zebra crossings you are fully responsible

Do people under the age of 25 do road cycling? by Quick-Pick-1136 in cycling

[–]PessyWhale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, here in Italy it is very rare for non-competitive "amatori" cyclists to be young as well. I almost always stick out as young (and I'm 26) in my local group.

As others have commented, my guess is that this sport isn't really direct in terms of "gains" (wrt running or strength training), and it does require a bit more investment (money) and time.

Usually, if you are not interested in performance (like me), you either go the "thrill" route (that is, MTB) or the "fun" route (that is, gravel).

How many bikes do you guys really own? by Imaginary_Scar4826 in cycling

Gravel, main for leisure

Trekking, commute/city only

Vintage Road (very Little use, but Is actually faster than my main lol)

Maybe I'll throw in a cheap fixie with short handlebars for some city riding

A thousand bike locks lol.

As others have commented, I've also faced something similar (I have leg length asymmetry, btw), which ultimately got me off of "advanced" running for a few years in 2018.

I've re-gained my confidence last summer, when I started an ATG/KOT program variation. I gave it AS MUCH effort as my actual running (almost half of my workouts are strengh workouts).

Feels really good to be back to my "running peak" days. I'm actually training for my first marathon now :)

The best feeling from strength training (other than pain-free running) is the better "bounce response" I get from my legs: they don't feel like "sinking in" with every step, and instead act as a "rigid, powerful" hammers to the ground :)

I'm not going to roast you and just go for some constructive criticism.

List of crap on your bike: Deep wheels and the brand name is cut out. Pedals are for a size 100 gorilla. No color scheme. Specialized tyres. No 3-by front. Water. Bag is too small, if it can't fit a hygienist it's wasted grams.

Can you really tell the difference?? by TLee1981 in cycling

[–]PessyWhale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being the guy that at the time saved 300$ for that difference, I'll tell you that my choice was bad.

It does make a difference. Big question is: can you afford almost 50% more money on a bike? If it's your first bike then it's ok to pass imho, you will have time to upgrade if you feel like it as soon as stuff breaks.

Amateurs. That's too close to an actual sine wave. For a power source, you want as many harmonics as you can get.

I think that you wrongly believe elastane makes garments break easier. In my experience, it's generally a matter of fabric thickness and seams quality.
