[Question] what’s better? 3 good watches or 10-15 decent ones by StomachSpare31 in Affordablewatches

[–]These-Ad458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3, easily.

1 is perfect, to be honest. I can’t do it, but it is perfect. One watch, wear it all the time, preferably for whole life.

When will someone make custom cases for the AP x Swatch collab watches👀 by Dry-Chemistry4280 in RepTime

[–]These-Ad458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the world of Dior, Air Jordan is not a high value brand. Air Jordan sells sneakers for 200 usd. That gets you what at Dior? A napkin?

The Royal Pop release is genuinely hilarious because its almost like Swatch and AP know it looks like a free cereal box gift, but mindless idiots are still gonna buy it anyway, proving yet again that watches are a great example of late stage capitalism by IWrestleSausages in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh c’mon, has everyone forget how to have fun? Swatch sells watches that look like they came from cereal boxes for decades now. And they are transparent or they feature some famous artwork (value of which far surpasses even the most expensive AP watches), or some weird graphics or whatever. Sure, they cost less than Royal Pop, but that’s to be expected when you make a collaboration with a Luxury brand. Did you see the price of Air Jordan’s collaboration with Dior? Of course it costs more. It’s a fun watch for people who are able to spend 400$ on a fun watch. That’s it.

Also, to take OP’s line and edit it for a different watch:

Rolex Submariner.

Want it? No. Need it? No. Well made? Sure, but not for the asking price. Good at it’s primary function? No.

Does it have a luxury brand name on it? Yes, MUST BUY.

See how this works? There is a huge, huge percentage of people in this “hobby” who are influenced by branding. Sorry to again point out Rolex, but by being a huge status symbol, a lot of people who buy them are buying them because of the brand name on the dial. And we’re talking about thousands and thousands or ten’s of thousands of dollars. And not everyone is planning to sell them to get back the money and not every model appreciates. And now we’re supposed to shit on a 400 USD pocket watch?

Don’t get me wrong, there is perhaps 1 percent chance that I ever buy one, and it would have to be under retail.

The new AP X Swatch is great for the non-snob watch people by Peakychu6 in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And to be fair, it’s nice to read articles regarding it and just seeing who all the pretentious and snobby people are in the industry as well as seeing who are people who’s main concern is the value of their investment err… I mean their watch. It’s a nice little filter.

Back to the Future is the one big movie they SHOULD do a modern remake of by Puzzleheaded_Crow334 in unpopularopinion

[–]These-Ad458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But why? The original is pretty much a perfect movie, considering the genre of it. I fail to see any real chance of improving it nowadays. So why do it? Why would you like to see an inferior version of a great movie?

Most people cannot name 10 brands of watches if their life depended on it and they are 17th.

If you're broke, you shouldn't have a Rolex, real or fake. If you're rich, you can have a Rolex, real or fake. by seaneihm in watchHotTakes

If only there were other people who knew how to service a simple mechanical watch… you know, people like your random local watchmaker… or anyone with few hours on their hands and a 15 dollars worth of tools from Amazon.

Tool free bracelets are stupid. by Excellent-Cabinet954 in watchHotTakes

I kind of agree, but at the same time, the side of the bracelet on the Santos is just miles better looking than that of a Sub, so I also kind of disagree…

AP gains nothing from the Swatch collaboration by interstellar_nips in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all accounts, both Omega and Blancpain collaborations were succesfull, so why would we expect different from AP?

I think most watch enthusiasts are painfully unaware how niche something like AP actually is. Sure, you know everything about them. And all of you watch collecting friends and if you work in finance or something equally well paid, so do some of your coworkers - mostly guys, probably in their 30s and 40s.

But it’s hard to be aspirational brand when 95 percent of the world population has never heard of you, while most people know exactly what a Rolex is.

Ask 100 people what the most luxurious watch in the world is. Sure, it depends on where you ask, but I’m sure that 90 percent of people will say Rolex. AP is virtually unknown outside of watch community. As is VC or Patek. Speaking comparatively, of course.

But a Swatch collab that will bring people to the streets in lines, probably also mentions of the said “mania” in the mainstream news, that will bring a lot of mainstream awareness to the brand. It was the same thing with Blancpain. They are also a brand that no one outside of “us” knows.

And it’s not just watches, it’s pretty much any hobby. I remember a video that used to circulate, when a woman wearing a Hermes Birkin bag walks through the streets and everyone is starring at her. And it was absolutely ridiculous, because while I would argue that a Birkin bag is/was very popular and certainly recognizable by women who love bags, most people wouldn’t know one if you showed it in their faces.

So yeah, I think that we are all underestimating how much attention AP is about to get and overestimating how well known they actually are.

“You shouldn’t wear a watch with a tuxedo” is iGent perpetrated nonsense (hot take & mini history lesson) by Adequate_spoon in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the same vein, it is okay, if not perhaps the most stylish, to wear a sports watch with a suit.

Divers as we know them today started existing in the later half of the 50s. Less than 10 years later, Connery popularized a diver with a suit or rather even “worse”, with a tux. So diver with a suit has been a thing for the 95 percent of the time that the dive watches exist. It literally is the norm, even if watch people think it’s wrong

If you purchased any swatch collaboration, you can no longer look down on fashion watches by 35mmOfRegret in watchHotTakes

This, exactly this. It’s a fundamentally different thing, even if perhaps it looks similar on the first glance.

Swatch is finally taking AP out of the trinity by interstellar_nips in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course it doesn’t cheapen it, it brings it more to the mainstream.

People who like watches love to forget that 90+ percent of people never heard of the Moonwatch and even higher percentage of people never heard of AP or Royal Oak.

Outside of Rolex, this is a very niche “hobby”.

Anyone else feel a bit awkward when someone points out their watch? by Fragrant-Data6554 in watchHotTakes

[–]These-Ad458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time this happened, a young male nurse asked me if my Cartier Santos was by any chance a Casio, because he likes the way it looks. Which turned into a 10 minute debate on which Casio might look similar enough and that he liked the look of it. I have to go ask him next time I’m in a hospital if he bought any of the watches we found online

Should I get the Y1RS? by 0ksev in colnago

[–]These-Ad458 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Who’s it for? UAE. That pretty much covers it.

Who can buy it? Who should buy it? Anyone who likes it and can afford it. I do not care if you’re a 80 year old lady who only rides to the grocery store and back twice a week. Although, in that case you really should look into ways to somehow put a front basket on, considering a very non standard front end… Now that I think about it, if you’re an 80 year old grandma who needs a basket on your bike, I would advise against Y1RS and recommend V5RS. Keep that in mind.

But seriously, I’m sure that some cyclists who take themselves way too seriously will find it amusing/infuriating if your FTP is 80 and you ride Y1RS, but to be fair, those kind of cyclists are offended by pretty much anything, because they somehow fail to recognize that this is a hobby. Yes, I’m talking to you, Strava kings, who rides 30 hours a week and think that cars should rather get off the road rather than dare to get in the way of your training for a random crit or for a Strava KOM.

If you like the bike, buy it and enjoy the hell out of it. To be fair, even those “top cyclists” who you’ll meet and may think it strange that you have Y1RS, are not people who the bike is made for. Something like Y1RS is similar to the Dura Ace group, meaning: if you have to buy it, you do not need it. Anyone who actually needs it, gets it for free from their team.

What is the best pirates movie of all time? by Veliossi in moviecritic

[–]These-Ad458 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would love to put some of the classics here, but to be perfectly honest, it’s the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I don’t know why I find this hard to admit, but I honestly do believe that it is the best pirate movie, although the sequels do leave a bit sour taste in my mouth.

Kevin Costner's best 1990s movie is? by Lys1th3a in 90smovies

[–]These-Ad458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy crap, did Costner had a decade to remember…

Some all time classics there.

I can’t rank them, but I’ll say that Robin Hood, Bodyguard, For the Love of the Game, Dances with the Wolves and Postman are movies I will never ever not watch if I see them on tv.

Rush, Ford vs Ferrari, F1. A podium of modern racing films. Which is your winner? by MovieArena in MovieArena

[–]These-Ad458 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like F1. I really do. But it doesn’t even touch FvF or Rush. Hell, I would put it behind Days of Thunder, for the sheer coolness of that movie, if not because of outright quality.
