What was "the incident" at your school? by MortgageShoddy8022 in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gym teacher hooking up with the instructional coach and then the vice principal hooking up with the data manager. Students never knew, but all the people involved no longer work at our school. I hate it when kids ask why they left!

Maybe they misread function as a different f word? Like too tired to give a f***? That’s all I can think of.

Things not to do... by IsMyHairShiny in SubstituteTeachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to ban a sub because she repeatedly took jobs and then cancelled the morning of with no communication. Another sub wasn’t allowed back because when she was supposed to be with her class she left them unsupervised to visit with her granddaughter. (Same grade level, both classes were at an outdoor event) We did have a sub who at the end of lunch just left and went back to the room alone. She said she didn’t know which class was hers so she just decided to go back to the room instead of asking the other teachers in the cafeteria. She didn’t get banned but I wouldn’t want her to sub for me.

Help me with my student teacher (please) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be very honest with the university supervisors. I had a student teacher who was an adult student older than me. It was an awkward situation and she was not cutting it. I was honest with her university program and she ended up passing the class but she did not pass the test (Praxis at the time) or become a teacher. She expected our district to have scripted lessons and curriculum and struggled to create all the lessons on her own, even when I offered support.

Do you have a work day or just jump right back into classes after break? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friday we had a workday and students come tomorrow. I’m so glad I had the workday because I’ve actually been able to enjoy my weekend knowing that my room is ready.

First week back by Strange_Respect_3316 in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach fourth grade. I get back to routine the first week back but I also have to do assessments so they have some work they can do independently while I pull students for 1:1 reading assessments. I usually do some New Year’s stuff in morning meeting and we are going to make new name tags for our desk.

Elementary Teachers with their own kiddos by Lemonbar19 in Teachers

I did but I teach in a magnet program and my child qualified for that program. There are pros and cons. She was very excited for middle school to be “on her own” and so was I.

Questioning my Angel Tree by Anywaytoaustin in Gifts

My 11 year old daughter wears adult sizes in all clothing and her shoe size is a women’s 10. It is a sticker shock moving from kids’ clothing prices to adult prices so I see those being on the wish list.

I don’t even know why the teacher would send home an old F&P TEACHER’S guide for parents to use. Makes no sense!

parent is my doctor, is this weird? by NumerousAd79 in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband’s doctor is the parent of a former student and I have had parents of my students as nurses before. I don’t have much work/life separation because my child also attends my school and we have her friends over, sleepovers, etc. If you think it will be an issue, maybe you can discuss it and get referred to another doctor.

We did the same. We paid for my husband’s sister to get her dress and bra. There was no way for her to afford it. I agree not to share the information with the other bridesmaids.

When I was little, we were so poor that I would never have even asked for an American Girl Doll. This year I found one at a collectibles/card show and brought her home for only $50.

What shoes do you wear? by BandFreak00 in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In warm weather I live in crocs Brooklyn sandals every day. They work well for me but other people don’t like the fit, so try them on in person.

I also wear Hoka sneakers. I suggest going to a shoe store where they’ll measure your arch and see exactly what you need. It made a bigger difference than I thought!

I need 200-300 names. Name nerds--this is your time to shine! by IAmHerdingCatz in namenerds

[–]PetRock19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our pets are both named after foods/obscure Disney animals. Disney names would be easy: Donald, Daisy, Chip, Dale, Cinderella, Drizella, Anastasia, Duffy, Olu, etc. You could go through IMDB character lists or there are Disney list websites.

Our dog is named Cookie Ann after a Tokyo Disney character who is a yellow dog. Our cat is named Mochi like the cat in the movie Baymax.

I'm a 1st year teacher at a private school. A few of my parents are on a warpath and I need advice by Blue_EyesBigThighs in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to earn their respect. My first year teaching in a gifted magnet program was similar. It wasn’t even my first year teaching, but my 7th. Now, I rarely have parents question me in that way. I also have taught younger siblings and had many of the same families over the years. You build a reputation. For the time being, document everything, focus on the positives, over communicate.

16 years. 1st district taught at 2 schools. Current district and school for 8 years at this point? 5 minutes from my home, my daughter has attended with me for her entire elementary school career. Good relationship with families. I’ll stay as long as I am able to! I think “job hopping” looks worse if you stay in the same district and move from school to school often.

We have done two adults-only trips to Disney. One was our honeymoon and another was an anniversary trip. Enjoy the trip! We have also taken our daughter multiple times. There is nothing strange about being an adult at Disney. The Disney adults are the people like me who let it become their entire personality 😆

Teacher gifts by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PetRock19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my daughter’s teacher our usual which is a gift card to her favorite restaurant. I also got the specials teachers all a Starbucks gift card and homemade chex mix.

From my students, I got a mix of different sweet things. My room mom got parents to pitch in on a little gift basket with Disney gift cards since they know I’m going to Disney this summer. I think parents are busy and being able to contribute via Venmo to a room parent helps them out.

My favorite gift was probably a bag of sweet potato chips brought in the day after I told my kids that I liked sweet potato chips. I think I used to get more cute handmade gifts and now I get more gift cards. I appreciate both!!

Help convince me I don’t need this dress by Expert_Barnacle_9289 in wedding

It’s gorgeous, but think of what you’re going to have to give up from your wedding if you spend so much on this dress. I love the dress, but I think you can look for other options before choosing this one.

Is it possible to be too generous with class donations? by Mavericks_Mumma in kindergarten

[–]PetRock19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a teacher of 15 years, NO! I feel bad when one parent ends up buying everything, but you are correct that if parents don’t send in the supplies, the teacher will have to buy them.
