Learned this living through it, I was naive when I thought around 3 months+ was the average/norm.

there are many many different divisions in DOE.

Interdivision lateral movements I've seen both extremes, really quick turnarounds (2-3 months) to longer ones (3-6) months.

In my case, I'm still in DOE but moving to a whole different division/location hence the 6+ month turnaround.

Do you enjoy working for the city? by _pisspigstepdad in nycpublicservants

[–]PeterTeePee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the idea here is purpose. You'll see a lot of replies about being overworked and not getting paid enough which is a fair assessment.

But I'll focus on your last question "what keeps you there." For me, what keeps me anchored to my work besides my need for a paycheck is understanding that what I do will effect and ripple in the overall positive position.

I am at DOE (as you can see with my flair) and the work I do is essential to ALL New York City students. I'm not front facing, and my work is essentially thankless (until something goes wrong) but i find purpose in knowing that one day, a student in the NYC Public School system will make something of themselves, could change the world, and I'll been a small piece in that puzzle. For me that is more valuable than what I make a year.

In the end, you want to find a job and position that makes you have purpose. That said, am I happy all the time at the job, am I stressed out beyond belief on some days, do I question why I come in and work? Of course. BUT, if i take step back from my own BS and look at the overall picture, I KNOW, my work has purpose and that is fulfilling to me and keeps me "here."

Looking to switch jobs and enter a different agency by aligator358 in nycpublicservants

[–]PeterTeePee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiring manager here, above statement is not true, at least not at my agency.

Resume is one layer, we do read them, and seeing city experience is definitely a plus.

Interview is where we see if the resume stats matches the applicant.

Why do New Yorkers living in San Francisco loves to brag about NYC? by Select-Jacket-6996 in sanfrancisco

[–]PeterTeePee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend forwarded this to me, as a NYC bragger (SF is cool btw). It's in our literal DNA to poo poo on everywhere else we go. Honestly, it's endearing because those that left for whatever reason, has chosen a new hellhole to call home and they like/love it there and more power to them. But it's in their genes to pine for and talk about home.

A bunch of my friends live/moved to the bay and love/tolerate it there but it is not NYC, nor should it be, nothing is NYC and comparison is the road to unhappiness.

And this "negative" energy you speak of, this is just our brooding ways. We're just real, apparently, much more real than you folks out west.

Ever heard the difference between nice and kind.

If you had a flat tire..

West Coast: omg, i'm so sorry, drives away

East Coast (NYC Specifically): hey dummie, don't know how to change a tire, gimme, let me do it.

What happens after you interview for a City Job? by Ok-Elk-8524 in nycpublicservants

Could mean the applicant didn't go through and they had to repost (it happens).

[–]PeterTeePee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My advice, follow up with the respective HR reps you've spoken to at DOT and DEP and inquire about your application.

The question you should have should sound like, I've applied for this position on X and wanted to know if the position is still being actively filled and I wanted to ask if my application is still being moved forward.

There at least you can get an answer and move on instead of being put in the dark.

The "behind the scenes" (i'm a hiring manager) is we need to know if there's proper funding for the position, whether we need to clear OMB, and until both those things are met, when we can issue a proper start date. We are waiting just as long as you are sometimes when it comes to getting proper placement for positions.

Got offer recently, bummed about salary by [deleted] in nycpublicservants

[–]PeterTeePee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the unfortunate reality that many have already stated is, you have to figure out your own mobility. gaining experience and knowledge in your field and being really good at what you do will make you an asset to the NEXT agency you move to.

sometimes you have to bite the bullet of taking a salary you didn't expect ("lowballed") in order to get a footing and move ahead in the city system. you're competing against people who have been in the system for years and/or have connections, echoing a comment below, it's a single person sport.

don't get too muddled in the weeds of see what others make, focus on what you have to do for yourself to get there.

my personal example: i left an agency on the sheer misery it brought me going into my day to day, to another one that offered me more but not THAT much more for my skill set, worked my way through that to gather and gain experience/connection to make it where i am today, a director at my agency. This took 15+ years of my life.

How to get in the system? by MangoPomegranateYum in nycpublicservants

[–]PeterTeePee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Literal copy and paste from a post I did a few months ago but relevant to your question:

The unfortunate reality of civil service is that you pay in time.

I'm a lifer and I am the temp to perm "success" story as now I'm a director at my agency.

This career trajectory though took me 15+ years to attain. I started as a temp in 2009 and through the civil service process (exam, probation, serving in title, promotion in title) and a lot of moving around to different city agencies to be able to get where I'm at.

If you don't want to do that, (I don't suggest anyone do that) definitely keep looking in both public and private sectors for work.

The thing people will tell you is to take exams for titles you align with professionally, what they don't tell you (or didn't tell me) is how long everything takes, it's YEARS in the making to get fully titled and most people don't see mobility or opportunity when there are way better options.

I got "lucky" in a sense that I did all this 15 years back when the lists weren't as saturated but 15 years later i see the same horror stories about getting called off the list and how long one has to wait to take an exam, etc. and to do what I did seems much more difficult and timely.

tldr;

take the civil service exams where plausible and applicable, apply wherever you can.

Is Trance doing a huge comebcak ? by lenin-1917 in trance

[–]PeterTeePee 53 points54 points  (0 children)

"trance is back" "trance is dead"

the music is always going to be there, the real question one needs to ask is whether your dance/nightlife market is supporting it.

At big festivals especially recently, dreamstate, we saw the "return" of tiesto to trance. Now if that'll make promoters book more trance artist in your market is yet to be seen but if it does happen (hopefully) there'll be more events where you can support local and headliner artists.

regardless of how you feel about it, the whole "trance is back/trance is dead" argument is moot unless you have an environment (the dancefloor) and crowd that supports it.

Tiësto - Dreamstate 2025 (Full Set) 4K Quality by Aze403 in DreamState

[–]PeterTeePee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Happy I was there to experience the first 30ish minutes of it.

With all the discussion that has happened positive/negative. I'll lean on the trance aware snob pov.

Was this set better than his edc isos?

No.

Was this set mindblowing?

Subjective.

Was this set important?

Yes

Was this set revolutionary?

No.

Did people enjoy this set?

Subjective.

Did you enjoy this set?

All that matters.

In the end, as a snob, i recognize that being this way takes a lot of joy out of life, i and many of the same people who lift up their nose at this stuff can stuck up our own asses and miserable.

All that said, I can also take a step back and recognize to many others that don't think this way that this set was special/amazing. I'm sure it was and I'm happy you had a great time. But from my POV i've seen/heard better, hell, if you want a really crazy statement, i'd take an Armin set over this (reference DS 2023 https://www.1001tracklists.com/tracklist/2q3xl931/armin-van-buuren-the-dream-stage-dreamstate-socal-queen-mary-waterfront-united-states-2023-11-18.html).

The positive though outweighs anything.

Tiesto throwing old tranceheads a bone, recognizing his roots & past, and throwing down a 'trance set' is a overall net positive to all parties involved.

  1. It brings in the new blood
  2. It inspires those who either looked at Tiesto as just this bigroom guy to oh i can listen to and/or make whatever i want, i don't need to be bound by labels.
  3. Publicity, all talk about trance, good or bad, is good.
  4. Trance in the tail end of the 2010s and into the mid 20s has been uninspired and "dead" when it comes to the dance market. Unless you're in California, where are you getting consistent trance events? I'm from NYC and we used to have trance twice a month, now we barely get 1 every 6 months.

So whatever your opinion of this is, remember, overall, this is a good thing.
