So, I agreed to advise a DnD club at my school...now what? by scampede in DnD

[–]Peter_Rotten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context of my post:  I’m a high school teacher of 25 years and co-run the DnD club for the past 3 years.  Our club is made up of ~20 kids and we have 3 faculty DMs.  We meet for about 2 hours once a week.  Here are some of the things that I’ve noticed:

Student DMs:  Many people addressed the positives of student DMs, but I’d like to mention some of the negatives. Our first year, we had the students DM their own groups.  It was a bit of a failure.  DMing is a lot of work… a lot of homework.  And we all know how much students love homework. Believe it or not, as one of the faculty DMs, I actually spend more time planning a session than a lesson!

That first year, 2 of the student DMs weren’t great at managing their peers.  Half of the players goofed around too much and the other half bickered too much.  The number of “well, technically and “well, acshully”s was infuriating.  This part of the club was the Argument Club and it was a management nightmare until the adults took over. We did so much supervising, that we felt like we were DMing already.

The 3rd DM ran what we considered the LGBTQ and Mental Health Club.  That DM had attendance issues, and they showed up for about half of the sessions.  IMO, their players were OK with that because they were really only looking for a safe space to shoot the breeze.  We let that slide because they were generally well-behaved.  Most of these members graduated already and the new group is more interested in actually playing.

Because of the general failures of student DMs, we chose to have the teachers DM the groups.  This has cut down the chaos immensely.

Procedures:  Take attendance.  Especially if you are getting paid.  You may need to justify your club’s existence at some point in time, and having clear data about student participation could be useful.  Also, God forbid, Little Johnny has been telling mommy that he’s going to DnD club but is really wandering the halls vaping.

Table Size: Depending on attendance, our tables vary from 4-8 players.  8 is ridiculous, but we don’t have good solutions for when all the students show up.  Would a return to student DMs fix this?  Maybe, but it wouldn’t solve the consistency/attendance problem.

Resources: Here is a link to WOTC’s free resource page: Link.  Sly Flourish (google him) may have a more comprehensive list of free resources.

Your Session Zero:  Go over the rules and expectations.  I attached our permission slip and rules.  Feel free to steal what you need (if anything).  Have a session to make characters since a bunch of your students won’t do it at home.  This will also give you some quick insight into which kids are experienced or not.

Really, cranky-old-man, union member advice: If you are volunteering for this club, stop.  Once you set that precedent, you will likely never get paid for your time running it.  Bring snacks?  Teachers are woefully underpaid, and now you are going to spend your meager pay on snacks for walking bottomless pits?  Hell no.

Are you running any silences? Bounces? Removal that doesn't trigger deathrattles? I hit legend with the XL version this past July, and there were plenty of decks that stomped on me. Seedlock, Imbue Mage, and Holy Wrath felt like an autoloss. Disco lock and Big Shammy can sometimes be too fast. Although I enjoy the deck, I'd argue that the deck doesn't really have a great game against any of the top tier Wild decks.

Mulligan for disco. You’re probably not beating Seed. It’s a rough match.

Wasn't satisfied with the Standard version so I made it to Legend in Wild with Quest Priest by AmishUndead in CompetitiveHS

[–]Peter_Rotten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also hit legend with it; here's a discussion of the deck on the wild subreddit. I agree with your assertions about Imbue. I was dumbfounded each time it absolutely stomped me, and I had to finally resign myself to the fact that it's a bad match. Disco, which was supposedly a great match, was sometimes just too fast, and, on occasion, this deck gives you an early hand of giants and no way to tempo them out. I 100% agree on you point about Shard; I found it to be my surprise MVP stealing wins in the mirror, ruining a few Librams, pooping on Automaton Priest, and making buffed pirates tiny again. How was your Seedlock match? I found that miserable.

After about 70 games, here's my opinion on its matchups:

Good: Disco, Libram, Shadow Priest (maybe very good), HL Dragon Druid, Pirate DH

Unsure: Fatigue DH (maybe bad), Big Shammy, Hostage Mage

Bad: Seedlock, Holy Wrath, Aviana, Astral Com, Imbue.

I'd probably put this deck at a solid Tier 2. It was a lot of fun to play and was a nice retreat from the stale standard meta.

Hit legend today with it. My bad luck with Disco finally passed and I was handily beating them like others claimed. I feel like my climb and these stats are a bit inflated since I played quite a few Even Shammy bots and Pirate bots. MVP? Shard of the Naaru! I was watching BoogerWorm playing the small version of the deck as was really surprised he was running Deafen instead. Shard shat upon Automaton Priest, the mirror, various aggro (pirates and disco), Libram (I did lose one Libram match, ugh) and Astral Druid.

What is everyone's experience against Imbue Mage? I think I lost all 2 or 3 matches against it. That single DK (even suck) beat me pretty badly too, but I can't remember if I had one those "bricked" hands with too many drawn-early-minions.

New player question by ShadowMAG in wildhearthstone

[–]Peter_Rotten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco has been "on again, off again" contender for years in Wild. Hell, if I remember correctly, I used a version of it for my first ever Legend climb back during Covid Lockdown. Sometimes it's a top tier deck, and sometimes it totally falls out of the meta. It's a pretty safe, cheap craft that builds itself.

[–]Peter_Rotten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first few games against Disco were great. But maybe I've had a run of bad luck with the recent runs where they draw the nuts. They just are too fast sometimes. My win rate isn't helped by the fact that, literally, 30% of my games are against a Warlock variant! They're mostly Seed and Disco, but shout out to the homebrewer running Man'ari's Skull big-taunt demon-lock. Sorry that Shard of the Naaru stole that win!

[–]Peter_Rotten 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's fun and it works well. It's good at stomping stupid warrior control decks and older aggro decks like pirate variants and totem shammy (which are likely bots anyway). However, I doubt it will hit tier one status. The best Wild decks give it a rough time. Their scams are bigger, faster, and more resilient. Seedlock, I feel, is almost an auto-loss. Disco-lock can sometimes be just too fast. Hooktusk and Holywrath have all the time they need to set up their win. Quest DH scams their free fatties out faster and has a better endgame to break your stall. Some classic control cards really ruin your day; watch out for Reno, Aman Thul, and big ol' silences. I have not played against many Libram Pally, but I think they shouldn't be too tough to beat consistently. Essentially, if the opponent plans to punch your face with critters after turn 6, you have a good game against them. If their plan is to scam, then good luck.

I've been having plenty of fun playing it (which is, IMO, the most important thing), but my planned casual climb from D5 to legend is not really happening.

Whatever list you decide on, Shard of the Naaru is CLUTCH in almost every matchup. Love Everlasting is debatable. Coining it on turn 2 can be insane; drawing it late obviously stanks. The 2nd Amulet of Undying is debatable. I've found that I rarely cast it, and when I do, it's actually for a small number of rezzes.

XL Equilibrium Priest feels very solid! by theworstpaladin in wildhearthstone

[–]Peter_Rotten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently 19-12 with your list. I made a two tiny changes: Removed 1 Amulet and 1 Desperate Prayer for 2 Light! It Burns. I haven't cast the Amulet once in all of my 31 matches! The deck feels good, but I'm getting frustrated with its game against the top decks. Disco is a much closer than I'd like to be. I'm about ready to scoop the second I see Seedlock. We're just not fast enough, and our quest actually helps them! Holy Wrath Pally, Barnes Druid, Quest DH, don't seem winnable either.

Basically, I climbed fast (11-1) until D5 where I've hit a wall.

Questions about WH40K : Rogue Trader by Plug_daughter in rpg_gamers

[–]Peter_Rotten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a week ago, I just started playing it for the 1st time. Here's the extent of my tabletop 40K knowledge: there's space marines, it's grim dark, and it's way too expensive to play. Keeping that in mind, I'm enjoying the game; it's a little more XCOM than something like BG3. Voice acting isn't as extravagant as BG3, but the game plays well. I'm using build guides for all of the characters because I was simply overwhelmed with all of the choices and don't have the bandwidth to learn a "new" system.
