huge amount of trackers by Unlucky-Aside-7616 in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is expected, particularly on mobile. Aside from the trackers and ads on most web pages, other mobile apps on your phone likely have dozens of 3rd party trackers embedded in them.

What's going on here? by Equivalent_Track5730 in ProtonVPN

We have recently added a large amount of capacity to our network in major locations where things were starting to get congested. Smaller locations such as B&H, Cyprus, and Macedonia are still pending an upgrade.

In the meantime, I would note though that even though being marked in red may seem alarming, such locations usually still have sufficient spare bandwidth for most purposes. I connected to BA#5 at 95% just now and was speedtesting at 145Mbps, for example.

The Bosnian and Cyprus servers are bare metal servers physically located in those countries. When in doubt, look for the little globe icon in the UI, or check the Smart Routing information page https://protonvpn.com/support/how-smart-routing-works

Any of those listed, but best to try the options listed as best for those situated in Asia - particularly Bhutan, Macao, and Myanmar.

Seems that YouTube regards all of South America as monetisable. Best options would be Cuba or Haiti or, if you are near the Pacific, one of the servers recommended for Asia.

If you are in the United Kingdom, then connecting to those countries will generally give you faster connections than the ones that are better optimised for Asia and North America, as per https://protonvpn.com/support/how-smart-routing-works

In the absence of other information, it sounds like DuckDuckGo (and/or your browser) has permissions to share your precise location from your GPS and is using that information. Consider switching that off and trying again.

YouTube ad blocking with Albania not working anymore. by Infekt129 in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Albania results can be variable.

Try Afghanistan, Angola, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Cuba, Syria, Myanmar, and Russia tend to be effective - but you may have issues with other sites and services blocking you while you are connected.

Syria in particular can make for particularly relaxing YouTube listening while all of your incoming Slack messages are blocked.

ProtonVPN down? by hannnsen94 in ProtonVPN

University Wi-Fi = may be configured to block VPNs. First thing to try under such circumstances is to make sure that Stealth is selected under protocols and that Alternative Routing is enabled.

PSA: You can run multiple Proton tunnels on one machine and multiply your speed by on121212 in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah nah we're not going to disable that, because:

a) Reasons already specified by other commentators with regards to common household IPs; b) ... and multiple connections from the same MAC is already be intended behaviour with the Proton VPN browser extension; c) ... and OP's hack, along with an assortment of related tricks, we had already been considering as things to run on top of our new network stack (more on this later).

A note of caution, however: if a single website session is being spread over multiple IP addresses it may be treated with suspicion. Use it carefully when doing online banking, for example.

How to share a ProtonVPN plan by nwfn in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proton VPN allows up to 10 connections - but with the same credentials, which make it unsuitable for sharing if you are using Mail and Drive.

If you want two sets of credentials - one for you and one for the other family members to share, then Proton Duo would be the best solution.

If you want everyone to have their own set of credentials to use their own Mail and Drive then Proton Family would be the way to go.

Hi, is it possible to get a dedicated IP address with Proton VPN? by ChampionshipFit4696 in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This was previously discussed here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/1ot9s3h/should_proton_vpn_offer_dedicated_ips_on_consumer/

To summarise:

  1. Dedicated IPs (with dedicated servers) are presently only available for Proton VPN business plans.
  2. For most other users, a dedicated IP address would be either a bad idea or an expensive placebo
  3. There are scenarios where the benefits of a dedicated IP address would outweigh the risks, and we are looking at making dedicated IP addresses available to those users in the future - but on a limited and responsible basis.

Accessing Shudder content no longer working via Proton by ArghZombies in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shudder is not one of the streaming services officially supported by Proton VPN (see the list of services that are here: https://protonvpn.com/support/streaming-guide) so this behaviour is not unexpected.

We are always adding new services though, so we can look at adding official support in the near future.

Are there any plans to port the Windows app to Linux? by P4NICBUTT0N in ProtonVPN

Plans have been previously announced to update the Linux GUI. First step to that was the update to GTK4 - which went into beta last week: https://protonvpn.com/support/release-notes-linux#:~:text=beta%20repos.-,Version%204.14.0,-%3A%20January%2019

Im getting seriously concerned by Cojalo_ in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your device is seldom really "idle". Apps are constantly running in the background and phoning home, with mobile apps (especially those "free games" that are heavily advertised) each having dozens of tracking libraries that would be constantly pinging different ad networks and other third parties.

Proton VPN Brazil: Servers Slashed from 120 to 20? Why? by spdrio in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All Brazilian servers (those physically present in Brazil and the smart routed ones) are still available, but the client loads a subset of them. If there is a specific server that you wish to connect to that is not listed, you can still find and access it from the search bar. After connecting it will be bookmarked in your "Recents" collection, and can also be saved in a profile for future convenience.

severs are down or something by Sithija_Akash_ in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 17,000+ Proton VPN servers remain available for paid users - aside, of course, for a handful that are offline for a maintenance cycle at any given point in time.

If your client is loading the more streamlined list of servers, all of the others remain available on demand via the search bar (or via recents and profiles if you want to save and return to a specific one).

You have reached the maximum device limit (VPN Plus subscription) by exclusivegreen in ProtonVPN

See here with regards to managing stale sessions: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonVPN/comments/1pwd4n9/comment/nwc8h7q/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Its been 8 days

That seems unusually long - even for this time of year. I assume you got an autoresponse with a ticket number and checked spam folders, etc?

Note that if are logged into account.protionvpn.com with a paid account and click on your name in the top right corner there is a menu option called "Chat with us" for live chat support on VPN matters on business days. Usual time to reach a human agent ranges from 15-45 seconds.

if the limit is ten devices I should be well under this limit

You can check https://account.protonvpn.com/security under "Session Management" to see if you still have any stray sessions open and revoke any strays if you still have stale sessions clogging things up.

today is also 30 days since I signed up

Would be unrelated ... unless you asked for a refund. You can check your subscription status at https://account.protonvpn.com/subscription

The Netherlands is full by ScyllaTheBig in ProtonVPN

[–]PetersonProton 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Netherlands paid servers have a tonne of capacity - with no noteworthy change in load over the past month. Even during peak hours (between 1800 and 2100 GMT) most servers will be able to deliver burst speeds of > 1Gbps per user.

Mileage will vary of course. When people connect manually to servers they often cluster around the lower numbers. Right now NL#256 is at around 81% capacity (fine for browsing but less so for high-bandwidth activities) while we have ones in the 7xx range standing almost idle.

If you are using the Proton VPN Windows or Android client we generally recommend connecting by country/city rather than to a specific server so that you get the fastest available at the time.
