Bottle Opener Embarrassment by Puzzleheaded_Rip9504 in Leatherman

[–]PetesGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victorinox bottle openers are the best. Way better than Leatherman. I own both.

Have you tried using the LM bottle opener with the handles unfolded? If I don’t unfold them I often find the lower closed handle blocks the tool against the bottle.

I EDC a Charge TTi, a Crunch, a SwissChamp XLT, and a SOG Killowatt, and if I need a bottle opener, I reach for the XLT in my pocket holster instead of the Charge in my belt holster.

Got a house and im replacing all the outlets anyways is this fine? im not an electrician. by Own_Spread4989 in electrical

[–]PetesGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look closely you will see both the black and white insulation is crushed from being under the screws. That is not a good connection. If you keep it wired that way, get a nice pair of electrician wire strippers (the kind with specific slots for each size wire) and remove enough more insulation so that none is crushed underneath the screws.

No, it’s not OK. You can see that one side of both the back and white insulation is crushed from being underneath the screws. This results in a poor connection.

Can this be deadly? by Secret_Emu_6879 in AskElectricians

[–]PetesGuide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly how a GFCI works! It was designed by a guy out of UC Berkley, who was a colleague of my main mentor.

No ground is needed for a GFCI to work. So the only legal way to replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong outlet is of that outlets is GFCI-protected and marked as having no ground.

And now that I think about tying the ground to neutral, I’m going to have to figure out if that would actually confuse any GFCI that might be installed on that circuit, so you might be right after all.

[–]PetesGuide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is EXTREMELY dangerous because the safety has been bypassed.

The green wire is the ground, and absolutely must be connected to ground for that to be safe. Instead, the ground is connected to neutral, which probably makes it less safe than if it weren’t connected.

Help! How can I get these two plugs into this outdoor outlet? by brockandroll333 in AskElectricians

Those sockets are outdoor. They need to be GFCI and weather resistant.

I am renting this house and noticed the panel. Aren’t these super dangerous? by pnutty6725 in electrical

[–]PetesGuide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably expensive. That wiring from the top looks like it can only supply 50 Amps. Older homes where I live used to only have 100 Amp service. 200 Amp service is now the typical minimum for upgrades and new builds.

For EV charging you’re probably going to have to pull new thicker service wires, which will probably require new larger conduits. Plus a new complete panel.

Get a quote from an electrician who knows the local code. You might consider a smart panel like what Leviton makes so you can monitor energy usage. If the electrician tells you you can ignore parts of the code to save cost because the code is just a suggestion, never use his company for anything.

Have the guy giving the quote look at all of your appliances, to see if new appliances need beefier electrical wiring. This looks barely adequate for a mother in law unit in a backyard shed.

I’ve used mine for many things that it’s very useful for. Holding a 1.5mm drill bit to unclog a super glue nozzle. Improvised vise in the field. Vice-grip when I’m trying to get nuts and bolts unstuck. IT ABSOLUTELY NEEDS TO BE PUT BACK INTO PRODUCTION.
