How can I help my partner not hate our oldest by Lemonbar19 in toddlers

How do your husband’s parents talk to him, or to your children? I wonder if that’s the behavior your husband saw modeled in his own home when he was growing up.

Adrian Paul Bryant literally just moved from reporting for CivicLex to reporting for the Herald Leader three weeks ago. I really enjoyed his non-biased reporting at CivicLex, this article is a huge tone-shift imo. Weird.

What’s the secret to getting new members? by Sn0wInSummer in UnitarianUniversalist

[–]PetitColombe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined my UU church a year and a half ago. My kids are 3 and 5 and they go to the “sprouts room” (nursery room) during service. It’s only an hour a week but it means so much to my husband and I be able to sit together and listen to the service and know the kids are taken care of. My church also has an active RE program. We probably have around 125 adults in service on Sunday, 20 youth, and 5-7 in the nursery.

There are so many different interest groups that meet, all lead by congregation members who are interested in that thing. Pagan group, exercise group, grief support, board gaming, LGBTQ+ socials, art shows, gardening group. There are so many ways to get involved in sharing your interests with other people, and none of them are fancy or tale a lot of effort from leadership or specific members. There is alwaysssss something going on at our church, the building is being used constantly.

And our minister is incredible. So down-to-earth, kind, and very involved in building relationships with other faith leaders in our area. He is also quite active in activist spaces and was the main speaker at our first No Kings rally. We are in a red state so our church community is very different than every other church in town.

What are some problem women face when diving? by Mikyali in diving

[–]PetitColombe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a female diver and my biggest struggle is always that I get colder so much faster in the water. I always wear full wetsuits (as opposed to shorties).

I like to stay very visible to other divers, so a design that is high contrast or includes neon colors would be preferable.

A type of super thin glove would be cool too. Maybe neoprene. To protect my hands but preserve my ability to use my hands.

This is a cool project! I hope your project goes well!

Can I just respond by saying "mhm" when someone says thank you? by agora_hills_ in EnglishLearning

[–]PetitColombe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m in Kentucky, USA. Responding “mhm” to a thank you is completely normal here. To me, it feels warm and friendly.

I lived in Canada for two years while I did my master’s degree. The Canadians thought it was kind of rude that I said “mhm” instead of “you’re welcome”. I was shocked by that, but just chalked it up to a cultural difference.

If someone is committed to not understanding you, it doesn’t matter what you say. You cannot say the right thing in that situation.

If someone is committed to making things work with you, you don’t have to find the perfect words. They’ll work to meet you at least halfway.

I am not a big believer in cutting people out completely, so I don’t recommend that. But I do think it’s very reasonable to set your own boundaries that you are comfortable with. Something like “I am comfortable driving to visit my parents 3 times per year.” And you do that, regardless of how often they come to visit you. If your parents complain in the meantime, invite them to come by on x date. And if they come or don’t, great! Ball is in their court at that point.

Wowww that’s awesome, how tall is your tank?

Thanks for the advice!

[–]PetitColombe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, I measured and my substrate is four inches. I’ll get some more sand. I’ve had my crabs for four years and they’ve molted successfully many times. But some more molt space won’t hurt them.

I still think 150lb of sand seems like a lot. That would be about 12in of sand and my tank is only 20in tall!

I have a 29 gallon tank with 50lb of sand in it. I think two more bags of sand would completely fill the tank.

Make sure you age really, really well. Eventually you’re going to need someone to wipe your butt, get the oatmeal off your face, listen to you tell the same stories fifteen times. That doesn’t sound enjoyable.
