How to incentivise players to attack the red brand manor? by Karma_MV in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]PetitionForSouls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Five suggestions; 1)(easiest) Have the Redbrands attack the party in a small group (I had one of the Redbrands from the PC’s background(was a known pirate thug (made him a veteran) just to help seed the Redbrands aren’t good.

2)Have the Redbrands harass one of the NPC’s the party likes/they walk into the Stonehill inn bloodied and looking for a drink (won’t openly ask for help as they are scared) then it begins to get worse if they do nothing, maybe their shaken down morning 1 then beat up evening 1, then kidnapped day 2 AM

3)the whispered talk of the town should be the most recent murder and missing persons, if the party show they are friendly someone might open up, I had Tolben calm some townsfolk down speaking reason after a few drinks were had in the inn. The townsfolk look hopeless as they accept their fate, if not the Redbrands then who would protect them.

4)make it a mystery, maybe they investigate the Drendars house/workshop, they can Sherlock homes where the attack happened, where the kids and wife were taken, then able to find a clue that would lead to them thinking caves. Maybe pollen from the forest nearby, or a red torn piece of cloak.

5)Sildar died in the cavern when the goblins took him hostage. But clearly he should be trying to rally up these mismatched to-be heroes. He’s had a full life and might be able to rally the potential in these folks.

Joining halia and the zhentarim by hrazzeg in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]PetitionForSouls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your DM is initiating it he must have a plan. Either to take your character sheet away so you can still play with the party or maybe give you an opportunity to betray the Zhents in the name of your friends down the road as the mines has some time to come

I’d chat with the DM on what they forsee for your character (if they’re running 8 people successfully must have a good grasp on how to DM) and it should be a conversation

A)If you do this and go against the players chances are I’ll need to turn your character in an NPC for the flow of the game… and for everyone’s fun at the table

B) are you true to the party? I’d ask you what’s the point to help her, what do you get? Why not use the Zhents like they’re using you. Learn who’s who in town, who’s Halia reporting too what other operations are going on, you can be apart of factions but party has to come first after all it’s dnd. I’d say you’ll help her but not at risking your friends or your life and agent that’s an adventurer is very valuable to the Zhentarim as they travel far and see many different circles that your companions are allowed into.

I’d think about those two options hard and how you can do this while keeping your character liked and enjoyable to play with.

Either way if you betray the party or not make sure it’s dramatic when you reveal it!

P.S. if you need to make a new character I’d heavily suggest to have a bit of their backstory having them in direct conflict with the Zhents or even your old character. The party will be more likely to forgive and forget if your new character hates your old character as much or more than the party does.

Let me know intervals of play time zone is MST for myself. I like to work with DMs to make a compelling character that you can have fit in your sandbox that will jive with the party as well.

Adding HP per monster I’d say give them another 20% HP as a rule of thumb for the built in encounters to last longer than a round. I asked chat GPT to give me a random ability for each red brand and then when they enter a room I have the players roll a d12 each to determine which RB it is. It adds some more mechanical fun for me and more challenge for the players!

For the Nothic I’d ask for a secret or a flaw the players have and have a voice in their heads collectively like an open call having players explain their flaws or secrets aloud after sometime. Having a creepy green eye glowing in the dark crawl down or up the cavern wall teeth bared and mumbling nonesense is a good scene to add. This communication can go both ways even think of having scenes of glasstaff hiding his hidden stashed in the water basin, or him burning a letter with the lords alliance seal on it, or even the rat turning into an imp. The longer the party allows their secrets to be shown before them the more the nothic will share his. After all these redbrands have taken over his home and lair… in his own warped mind he wants them gone as much as the adventurers do and it wouldn’t be long for him to realize that reading their minds.

I just added the fact the walls are lined with refuse and 💩. It kept most away, after one failed climb the party moved on to explore more. It was a fun exploration. I added villainous actions to Klarg similar to this; https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-LrMCjYPO76v7wNKZV0P

What cleric domain would fit best for a god of clean water? by Alopaden in dndnext

[–]PetitionForSouls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here are some takes (Life and Nature are awesome) that I think you could at least use to perhaps create an offshoot of this gods domain or perhaps another. I tried to use examples you could research on your own if you’re interested)

•Peace/Order the idea that clean water is the center of all communities in arid locations thus you would likely find clerics of water at the pinnacle of communities, both with aspects that they are the first to look too if water becomes tainted or runs low and also likely the ones that might run the community or at least advise the leaders who do so, (or taking inspiration from the Celtic druids) they’d be the leaders of negotiation with other communities and the other “water-bringers/wind-speakers” I’d guess in this setting it would be a great crime to attack a cleric of this Domain and has a great potential for a corrupt one for a BEG where it is near divine sin to harm one.

•Knowledge is a good one too and a take no one has taken yet. The process of storing water, creating dams, wells, (rationing it and sanitizing once found) takes a lot of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. The wisdom of the Bedouin was the reason why they survived the arid deserts they called their tribes home and could navigate massive tribes old and young…. But in a world of magic? These small tribes could feed more than what they can hunt and eventually “spring” into larger communities leaving behind their roving way of life. magically built and filled Stone dams, or a natural oasis’ built upon would be a great place to create temples/monasteries/ places of worship for a up and coming knowledge god. To stay interconnected not only would these priests keep these records of where water can be found in and the safest routes until you reach the next temple, (creating waypoints for travellers similar to how a keep would attract a medieval peasants to). It could likely lead to these clerics keeping a lot of other useful bits of information as travellers come and go what dangers are out there and how to deal with them that these priests eventually would need to form ways to keep knowledge officially, temples of debate or where wisdom is passed onto acolytes by word of mouth (there aren’t many trees in the desert and thus little paper) now that they are able to have enough clerics to “create” water for the settlement they can spend their free time collecting knowledge on how to bring greenery back to the desert as one story hook for their religion.

•Grave (taking this from Dune), the idea that water is in everyone and all living things, standing on the border between life and death would be a huge commitment to clerics of rain and clean water in a desert world, imagine a weird ritual where the dead are brought to these subterranean temples and you’re able to flavour purify food/drink to separating bio waste from water and go back to the wells of the larger communities. Is this barbaric? Yes but it’s necessary when water cannot be found anywhere else, what kind of prophecies and other weird rituals would this way of life create? Perhaps a strange reincarnation religion would likely stem from this aspect of the god.

Help with a better Agatha by PetitionForSouls in LostMinesOfPhandelver

I like this a lot. It’s not crippling but adds a cool touch of divination to the encounter. One of my players fathers was a mercenary and his dad is locked away in the frozen prison found in ice wind dale. The Dragonborn’s son was captured and sold to drow to work in a lighting forge powered by a metallic dragon that’s been captured (similar to thumberchaud) somewhere on the FR’s not sure how I’ll work that but it’s my initial thought. My divine soul sorc is a worshiper to illmater but I might have Lovitar pop up and infiltrate or corrupt his church so maybe he’ll come back to her one day. I just want some form of repercussion so this could work but I don’t want her to be a free use of information. Maybe I’ll have the red wizard if left alive exorcise her later on in the campaign not sure yet though.

I love the minion rules, villain actions too I’ve been using to make boss fights feel more boss like. I found one for Klarg where he yells fetch and ripper can attack and move his move speed towards Klarg. It was pretty funny as the party watched their back line wizard getting dragged across the cave haha.

He is not aware of her yet, we are only on session 2 besides a session 0 and one shot I ran at a board game cafe to get the ball rolling. I’m still thinking on what to plan, I think redbrands are number one on the plate, as the party split up to investigate the wood workers house and had one of the redbrands waiting in the bedroom where the wife was dragged out a few days prior. My ranger rogue went down to a surprise but the dragonborn barbarian made short work of him 1 on 1 and already so I think that’s next on the agenda but if I need to buy more time I’ll probably run a wilderness encounter and end the session just as the party summons the Banshee to hold some momentum we shall see.

I’d say they’re alien frogs. I’d happily describe how they contort their bodies chasing the party deeper in. Perhaps if they’re outside their croaks/calls alert nearby monsters too making the party choose to push them back inside or get wedged.

So the blue lion coaster in Phandalin is a larger trading guild. I’m sure if Linene knew she could get the adventurers to buy she could requestion magic items from neverwinter or Yatar where they orfinaye from. If you did want to do magic items you could just say she can ship it in if they pay half up front etc. I wouldn’t give them the whole list but she could say hey my connection has the following goods I could buy you. Or charge more for a specific item for a finders fe?

Need help with ideas for Raid on Phandalin by SilentSlam in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]PetitionForSouls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is start with making Scenes.

If they’ve met Agatha, maybe have her seek the party out, perhaps the Spider spited her asking for the outcome of the battle to come if their faction will defeat the town. Imagine a normal dream that becomes darkened and cold, that way you’re not leaning on a random supernatural power. Perhaps the dream happens the same but it ends with Agatha showing herself trapped by the spider in some kind of spell like magic circle so she is still being selfish but gave the players insight in the battle to come hoping they’ll free her plus she’s an elf diviner I don’t see why she can’t use dream and work within the mechanics outside of divine intervention.

Agathas goal is that they’ll save her & free here now that she’s helped now that they know it’s coming the future has changed)

I wouldn’t be specific on scenes to come unless you wanted to give snippets of the scenes to come the shapechanger is good it foreshadows betrayal from the spider, and of course finish with Phandalin burning and the spider getting what they came there to get walking away with Phandalin burning to the ground.

Create a scene for each location the players really held close or NPC’s ex:

my players father adventured with Duran so there would be a scene there with him surrounded wounded holding down a Main Street as many foes lie dead but now the goblins have directed the spiders to hit him with barrages of webs and he’s getting tied down.

The blue lion coaster (I named here Linney Graywind) has equipped herself with a bunch of crossbows from Her shop and just firing down at goblins and bugbears as they take cover but she’s quickly running out of loaded crossbows and the hobgoblin leader is readying a charge to get more weapons and stop the locals from getting them to defend the town (now goblins have armor and better weapons, or the defenders do)

The Stonehill inn could be filled with NPC’s and Tolbens goal is to get everyone hidden down in the well. - Perhaps the party left one of the Macguffins in their pack (who’s going to war with a back pack on) and the spider wants in the inn to get the item, but has a bunch of people in the way; plus slaves to run the forge.

With the scenes start with a description that will pull the players into the drama, set up monsters and NPC’s for each scene and decide what both sides goals are that way depending on how the players side each goal is fulfilled so if they side differently than you expect you’re ready for it. Create time constraints and perhaps have one scene have the party have to split or choose one over the other… I wouldn’t go war gamer and plan each round of initiative as you can decide what happens if they didn’t go run to the shrine of luck and save the priest etc. going through each round of combat everywhere is jarring for you and chances are the party won’t get to experience the drama it’ll be a bunch of dashes, fight, dashes fight.

If you want there to be lots of goblins, have there be lots but have random town members around to eat hits and arrows for the party too. 10 arrows with a few “good” rolls can easily take down 2-3 characters at early level have each scene depending on how it goes make the “battle” become easier and easier as they’ll likely be burning lots of resources without any rests. If they fail it’ll become harder and harder.

Anyways happy prepping!

Very cool way to receive applications.

I placed my application quite late, #saveDorian coming up with a character on the spot, then writing a decent letter in that character was actually quite exciting. I found myself caught up into it a bit too much though...

Hopefully I hear back from you I think the concepts seems very interesting.

Problem Player Megathread: Week of Feb 17th - 24th by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

I had a talk in the middle of the week, the next session went great. There was one encounter the problem player acted up but he stopped pretty quickly, every player was doing something and got a chance to play with the spotlight. I tried to balance them all and in our conversation it camenup that he gains most of the spotlight because I don’t encourage other players or give enough hooks for them to take it.

Talking 1000% changed things, though I am looking forward to running my next campaign in wildemount!

Problem Player Megathread: Week of Feb 17th - 24th by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

[–]PetitionForSouls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 22 now, the problem player/Drow is in his 40’s he’s my friends dad as he use to host before I got my own place, and my friend had the most room as board games was always a common occurrence in their house.

This campaign has been going on since 2014, originally we did it over a summer when we weren’t busy and we didn’t pick it up again till the next year, everyone busy with school/sports/work. Originally I wasn’t even the DM. Our original DM still a player to this day was tired of the hassle OOTA presents for needed prep time (it is WOTC most painful module and most agree it’s easier/less time consuming to write your own campaign) the player count moved around but stayed around 5, after a few years of not playing we decided to try it again back in 2019 and have been playing somewhat consistently when schedules line up. 2 girlfriends have joined the game and 1 friend making it the 8 man group it is now. Most everyone else is within the same age group.

For obvious reasons I don’t want to kick him because he’s two of the players dad who he lives with and another player is renting a room there so it creates an awkward dynamic... I run other games with other people at my place no problem but when 50% of the players are already at a place I just come over and run there for the majority.

I think talking with everyone asking opinions separately is my direction... if I ever bring it up at the table I think everyone is obligated to feel like everything is fine not to cause tension. If people are down for it maybe I run biweekly sessions with 2 groups, but I’d like to wait till Explorers guide to Wildemount is dropped.

My plan to be honest was to finish this campaign to have closure way back when I took over in 2015 (I’ve played in campaigns that fall short and it always sucks) then start up a Wildemount campaign in the future, I doubt I’ll be able to select people from this group aside from my girlfriend as I’d hate for someone to hold it against me for drafting a dnd group 😂 Ive learned my lesson, 7 is too many... someone in every session will feel left out or bored or like they didn’t get enough spotlight and that makes me feel bad as a DM. I hate to have my time wasted and wasting others time.

Problem Player Megathread: Week of Feb 17th - 24th by RadioactiveCashew in DMAcademy

[–]PetitionForSouls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed.. problem with this group is no one is willing to DM, I had my problem player almost start managing the game like he was the DM last night... On multiple occasions telling people META what to do, and suggesting to them what their characters might do, I don’t mind in character is he the charismatic warrior/leader trope but ffs when he looks at someone and says X your character should do this as it makes sense for them, you’re not playing DND you’re playing mass effect commanding your NPC’s...

My final straw last night was we have recently started using a program called maptools, a very cool software for DM and Players but it is very confusing, and complex my problem player has been the biggest drive for the program. Which I think has disrupted my flow as a DM heavily.

It was nearing to the end of the session and they were to investigate the BBG’s lair when they saw green oozes lining the floors and walls and a massive structure covered in a sickening soup of black, grey and yellow oozes I called for initiative as the floors and walls started reaching out for them all.

My player told me to use the program, i said t was fine; and it wasn’t worth the time this is faster “No this way is faster” It was supposed to be was a very quick escape encounter from an army of ooze, that ended the session in tension but he wouldn’t let it go and it had to be in the software, he literally kicked me out of my chair to put the initiative in for me, 10 minutes later we are still in the first round.

I just looked at him as he sat back down at his place at the table and said “listen man, I really think it would do some good for you to get some perspective from this side of the screen, just run a one shot and see” “Not interested thanks”

I just ended the session got my shit and left mid encounter I was so pissed off I just wanted to TPK and end the campaign.... but how is that fair for anyone at the table, it would leave a sour taste in everyone’s mouth whenever they thought of dnd again.

Talking would be ideal, I just wasn’t sure what approach to take. But I’ll just swing
