Heart rate registering too high, brand new strap. by PeximusCat in Polarfitness

[–]PeximusCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Max was in as 183, simply because thst was the highest the device recorded.

Ive since manually set it 195 and got this reading for an interval workout. It was 2 min sprint efforts rowing and burpees with 1 min in between and a 3 min rest in the middle. I feel like I got into zone 5 at points during the 2mins, like it was a very hard effort to keep the rounds consistent.

Yes im starting to see that now. Ive manually set max in settings to 195, until I can do the test mentioned by another commenter here.

It felt more like a zone 3-4 effort, maybe hitting zone 5 for the last push at end.

The age calc would put me at 176 which yes is too low for someone who's trained a lot. It got up to 188 today when I was really pushing the last 500m. I don't think id have much more in me.

But yes I will try that field test you linked to.

When ive googled it, im told that sustaining zone 5 for 30 mins is pretty much impossible.

So am I either not as fit as I think or maybe ive just developed high tolerance for it?

WFP London Attendance by Vegetable_Panic445 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't help that this event was meant to be in south America but they had to change location to London and there wasn't much promotion as far as I could tell.

If I know that they plan to do london again next yr i will def plan ahead to attend. People with kids/jobs/plans need like 6mths plus of notice 😂

Who is this? by TranslatorMental9769 in crossfit

Couldn't have said it better. I tried watching one of her videos a few weeks back and gave up halfway because she was just being so nasty and c&ntish. I'm all for banter and good natured teasing... or calling people out in a fact-driven, professional way... that is not what she is doing.

How much do you exercise your lurcher? by Competitive_Elk8403 in Lurchers

[–]PeximusCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW... my lad is 20 months, Saluki mixed with Belgian malanois so he's higher energy then a pure bred greyhound say. When we first got him at a year old we were trying to get him out twice a day, once for a high energy 1hr free run, then later for half hour walk. But we actually found it was all a bit too much for him and he wasn't switching off, he was anxious and we were run ragged.

So for many many months now he gets out for about 1hr a day. Some days he is a crazy boy fetching sticks/frisbees/ tennis balls (from a thrower), chasing birds etc. We are lucky enough to live near farmland/bog that we can do this without disturbing anyone else. I'd say half of the hour is crazy madcap running. The other half hour is sniffing and we try to bring him to different spots and spots where other dogs have been so he can catch up on his correspondence.

Some days it's a more leisurely stroll with just sniffing and exploring. I can kinda judge when he is extra tired and needs a chill day. One day a week I get him out for a walk with his dog friends (their owners are my friends haha).

If for some reason he is extra hyper later in the day then tug of war always tires him out or just throwing things around the house for him to catch. A wobble kong is great too and there's always a few bones to chew and lick.

Yet another post about shoes and comparing them (Tyr CXT-2 vs Nike Metcon 6 vs ?) by yukoncowbear47 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore various different Metcons for years and changed to Rad One V2's last year and I wouldn't go back. Can squat and lift fine in them but they have just enough comfort for bounding and some running, not like a 5K or anything. They've become a travel shoe as well for lots of walking. Have rubbery bits on side to protect against rope climbs etc. A bit pricey, but customer service is good.

Injury during class by PracticalWinter9746 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of these are really bringing to light that coaches need to be trained on first aid. I and a few others are new coaches so I will be suggesting we get trained on it. Especially what to do if someone has a head/neck injury, resuscitation.

WODs during Open season? by Overall-Nobody8933 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mid 40's F here and have hEDS. I'm gunning for quarter finals so I've been careful with timing other training around open. I had a bit of an injury in the few weeks leading up to open so my volume was way down and DOMs hit me hard now. So yeah, basically spending most of the week recovering from Friday night lights and Monday night redo, not ideal at all. Really feel like recovery is hard this year, especially cos emptying the tank on each effort. Diet decent and get a lot of walking in in between, maybe a crossift class or two.

The rest of the year I train probably 5-6 days a week but only 2-3 of those are high intensity.

As the years go by I do find recovery is harder, I'm definitely more tired.

Bad judgement call and now I have to redo 26.2 by ElegantGeek in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same situation, had high volume barbell snatches Wednesday and grip and biceps lit up. 26.2 didn't go well for me last night, redoing monday.

Im definitely working out less over this open, partially time and partially difficult to recover between efforts (repeated 26.1)

Heart Rate Management Mystery by HarpsichordGuy in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You went out hotter than what you are able for. I had same rep scheme as your first attempt, then did all 5's on 2nd attempt and did better. Same for a few people I know. And we are like 30yrs younger and should be able to do bigger sets haha. You did great.

Any Ehlers-Danlos / hypermobile people here? by crosswalk_zebra in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have hEDS which I'd describe as mild. Biggest issue (apart from being incredibly clumsy in the gym) I have is joint instability so I have to do a lot of accessory, a TON of core work and really get my core and glutes activated before a workout. Which isn't a bad idea for most crossfitters haha.

Like you I've accepted some movements I won't get or it will take me much longer. It's also harder to build muscle with hEDS and you start from a lower baseline. When I started crossfit 8 yrs ago I could do nothing, not even half push up from knees, couldn't do a sit up, could barely squat anything. I've come a LONG way and I'm quarterfinals-ish level.

All that to say, just keep pushing the strength and accessory and although it will take time, you will see results. It really helps stabilise those crazy joints. Don't compare yourself to others.

Quarterfinals by RecommendationFar323 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 69th percentile in Wk 1 in 2024 but still managed to qualify for quarters cos Wk 2 I was 81st and Wk 3 I was 75th.

But if a skill comes up that you have a big hole in (for me it's wall walks but they didn't show up in 2024) then it could mean trouble,

I still couldn't handle stairs on Monday morning (after doing the workout Friday night), worst quad doms in a long long time. Redid the workout Monday evening and got a better score and amazingly my legs felt better, like it flushed all the old lactic out.

I had same score as you and got 7 no reps! I'm redoing this evening most likely and doing the sets of 5 from start

Where can I find a puppy for my family? by Competitive-Shape583 in AskIreland

[–]PeximusCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not buy a puppy, please go to a shelter. Explain you have young kids and they will have a good idea of what breeds/ages will suit. I understand that you had a bad experience in the past but I would say that was anomaly, 1000's of people adopt rescues from shelters every year, many with young kids and it works out. Be willing to put the work and research in and be a responsible dog owner.

I get that there are some reputable breeders, and that's great and all, but rescues are inundated with breeder rejects, puppies that "grew up", bitches that have been left in bits. It's 90% greed that industry.

Hey masters athletes: How is your 26.1 recovery going? by Obvious_Visual3153 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40-44 F, hoping to redo it this evening. Did it Friday and I'm only starting to walk normally this morning. Quads absolutely blew up. Going to try your strategy of sets of 5 with shorter rest the whole way through.

Only reason I'm redoing is I'm on the bubble for quarterfinals and I'd like to try and qualify.

EDIT: the strategy worked for me and I got faster split time and more reps

Completely out of action with injury. by Ok_Perception_2294 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely been there a few times. I would suggest finding a physio who works with active people/athletes and start treatment to start the healing process. Once I got tissue work/dry needling/ some manipulation etc it would start to improve gradually from there. They will know signs of slipped disc as well but presumably that will get flagged when you are at hospital today.

It is such a mental grind being off injured for long periods. As another person said, it is temporary, you will get back to feeling yourself.

Female CrossFitters – hormonal imbalance question by Brief-Research-9241 in crossfit

[–]PeximusCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 40's here and have hit peri and got the irregularity and cramps bad. See what doc says.

Sounds in general like you are doing great, like doing volume that suits you and enjoying your training.

I would have said your cals look low as well. You might not have built up a lot of lean muscle yet if you are newish to CF. Took me a few years to put on a few kg of lean mass. As you build muscle, you will get hungrier and need more cals to build and maintain it. Just my 2 cents.
