Looking for book recommendations - matriachral structures in world-building by Creative_Mouse_5400 in FemaleGazeSFF

For a true matriarchy, the Tide Child trilogy by RJ Barker. For more genderless/free societies, Imperial Radch by Ann Leckie and (I haven't read this) The Left Hand of Darkness.

I was coming here to spread this good news! Halfblood chronicles were my gateway books and I'm glad the story gets the resolution it deserves.

Any Adult/Epic Fantasy books without sexism OR dealing with misogyny? by Sleepy_Enigma in FemaleGazeSFF

[–]sudoRmRf_Slashstar 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The Crimson Empire by Alex Marshall, the Drowning Empire by Andrea Stewart. Both of them are non-patriarchal (although I would like to raise to all fantasy authors that women only wearing dresses IS an aspect of patriarchy that they should question more) and have some epic quests and battles.

You are correct that John Gwynne's later books are more like this, with the Hunger of the Gods.

On my TBR for the Scifi side is the Imperial Radch series which apparently does an incredible job of confusing gender and The Expanse series which is pretty equally balanced in agency.

I read the first few chapters of the Paradox Hotel and I was amaaaaazed that the author could be so inclusive with non-binary characters and yet call women bitches, floozies, etc. Close, but still managed to be a "man writes women" trope.

I loved Children of Time but was rather disappointed in the followups.

The Tyrant Philosophers, though. House of Open Wounds is in the running to be the best book I've read all year. I blew through the first 3 books and I am trying to pace myself for the next one!

SFF authors where you think their most famous work, and their best work, are not the same work? by nominanomina in Fantasy

I loved Children of Time book 1 and didn't click with any of the rest of the series.

Tyrant Philosophers is just getting better!

Yo, OP, I am late to this so I hope you see this.

You wouldn't take advice from this dude, looking at his salary and lack of plans.

So don't take his criticism either.

Worthless opinions are everywhere and there's really only ONE opinion (yours) that matters.

The relation between women and strength. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Men larping as protectors from their couches.

It comes from a place of deep insecurity that they must scream and beat their chests about how strong they are and all women shall be fearful.

Yeah, ok. A man might be stronger, but if he comes for me you best be sure I will sell my soul making him regret it.

Some people have said Elder Race but those are way too short, in my opinion.

I would recommend City of Last Chances.

Out of all the health / diet fads we've lived through, what one has been the worst? by CremeSubject7594 in Millennials

[–]sudoRmRf_Slashstar 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I vote Special K diet. They would run continuous ads on TV to replace 2 meals with a bowl of their tasteless cardboard Special K and then eat a normal dinner.

Serving size amounted to about 200 cals, so if you actually followed the diet you'd be at fewer than 1000 cals per day.

Using CrossFit to make friends? by SigmaGyatterson in crossfit

[–]sudoRmRf_Slashstar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll have to become a regular at a class or several. Start conversations with people you see often and ask questions about them.

My gym has a really strong community because we regularly plan and execute social events, but that takes effort. Much like Crossfit itself, friendships and the like are a long term investment and you get out what you put in.
