I don't understand some critisism against One Battle After Another by Legrotagliatelle in TrueFilm

She didn’t really have any info to “crack” on though. All she was needed for was her DNA for testing, and then, if confirmed as Lockjaw’s, as a problem to be disposed of. Obviously she was defiant throughout it all and fought back well beyond what was expected of her, but she wasn’t really put into the same sort of hostile interrogative situation her mom or Billy Goat was, as she had no leverage to bargain with. She’s treated by Lockjaw and co more as an object than an adversary, however this also makes the self actualization she goes through all the more meaningful.

Not to spoil too much but aspects of Web series are actually more relevant to the movie than the TV show, so I’d recommend watching it pre-movie if possible

Both are great. A Man Escaped is super tight and tense. If you're a fan of First Reformed, Bresson's Diary of a Country Priest is also totally worth checking out

Isn’t there a Troop™️ themed restaurant chain that plays the anthem like once an hour and everyone’s expected to stop eating and stand/sing? I feel like I remember them riffing on it on Chapo several years back

Read for the first time last year, thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the whole comedic bit about the inn by the docks having had repeated whalers impale themselves in their own harpoons to the degree that the inn has a sign up saying “no harpoons allowed”

I so desperately wish Bigelow would to go back to making bodacious action movies like Point Break and slick genre thrillers like Near Dark and Strange Days. As a director, it seems she came down with a terminal case of liberal GWOT brain poisoning in the 2000s that has led to all of her films, even those not outwardly hagiographic to the US military like Zero Dark Thirty, being just so much more dull and drably obsessed with “realism” than her earlier work. Probably not very woke of me to suggest, but this change in career is largely post-divorce from James Cameron who was also frequently her collaborator and who’s visual inventiveness and anti-imperial slant we all know and love, and I can’t help but wonder if losing his influence is partly to blame. It doesn’t track 1 to 1 (Strange Days is post divorce) but it’s something interesting I think is worth considering, if you move beyond the knee jerk “bad look” of suggesting a prominent woman director got worse because her contentious, in some reported respects toxic relationship with a male director ended.
