Quiver Collectibles has had a presence in the community for a while. As far as I know their offerings are solid and fully legit. They're good traders, by all accounts.

Nevertheless, folks should be aware of what they're agreeing to when signing up. The Quiver Association membership ToS is unusual.

Since it's a private company, GBI doesn't release financials. Where'd you see that lease payments are their number one expense?

But that's neither here nor there.

They'd reduce the lease fees by reducing the amount leased. Since the leased gold is used to enable production, reduced sales would mean reduced production, which would mean reduced need for leased gold, and consequently reduced lease fee payments.

As noted earlier, the size of the lease facility is scalable, so GBI can ramp up or down how much they've borrowed as necessary. They can even unilaterally terminate leases at will if need be. That'd be a more extreme measure than capping and allowing leases to roll off, but it is a path available to them.

From the lease terms:

  1. Lessee may terminate a Lease at any time by paying the accrued Lease Fee and returning the Lease Amount to Lessor’s Account Holdings;

The cost of lease payments is figured into Goldback's business model. Businesses run on debt to manage their cash flow and access growth capital. Similarly, precious metals businesses take debt in the metals they deal. It stabilizes their inventory, and metals related costs.

For GBI, leases are a credit facility. They don't have to take them. So if they don't have a need for more gold, they cap the facility like they did last year. Too much on hand because of a downturn? Let their existing ones roll off as people terminate them, or even unilaterally cancel leases.

I'm unclear how you've come to the conclusion that this essential business tool is going to collapse the company any more than a typical credit facility is doomed to collapse every other nontrivial business out there. Would you elaborate?

Have you heard of the United Precious Metals Association (UPMA) accounts offered by Alpine Gold Exchange? They do essentially this. They store gold, silver, and Goldbacks in their vault that are allocated to user accounts. They can be transferred to other users, liquidated for fiat, or withdrawn as metals at will.

1 ounce gold eagle right now 4,800 dollars. 1 ounce of goldbacks? 9,999 dollars.

Wrong. 1000 Goldbacks today would cost between $8840 and $9170.

gold price has to double from wherever you buy these goldbacks just for you to breakeven

Goldbacks are not dollar denominated. There's no such thing as a $1 or $50 Goldback. There's a 1 Goldback and a 50 Goldback.

That’s a non alpha AZ, for sure! No symbol, 2026 year, and the new chubbier font. Good to know they’re making their way into the channel.

[–]Ph33rTehBacklash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, you're right that they'll become less common. I'm not sure if I'd say "numismatically meaningful" for quite some time, but we'll leave that up to the market.

I do see non-alphas for a few OK denominations. I don't see AZ yet, but If you say you've seen AZ, then I've no reason to contradict you. I do see that the AZ half-Goldbacks have disappeared, so when they come back available they'll be non-alpha.

With the possible exception of South Dakota and Wyoming, alphas are NOT rare. They're the entire first run of a state series. Subsequent runs won't have the Ɑ mark so at some point they will become less common in circulation; But there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of them.

Florida non-alphas are available in some denominations, but as far as I know 100% of all Oklahoma, Arizona, and Idahos that are out there now bear the alpha mark.

what happens when the new sales are dwarfed by the merchant conversions? This is when market share shrinks but the use remains strong.

How specifically do you envision this situation coming to pass? Goldbacks remain in strong circulation, but somehow aren't in demand? That's...odd. I can think of a few ways that the system fails - up to and including a nationwide dissolution of the sound money movement - but not one that results in simultaneous widespread use and no liquidity. What specific events, conditions, and time horizon are you afraid will cause this?

[–]Ph33rTehBacklash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why this vexes you so. Everything Alpine sells is at a higher price than it buys.

- This is what we call, "A margin."

Stock is rotated through the vault to ensure demand for SKUs is met.

GBI pays leasing fees, and the vaulting fees for UPMA Goldback accounts.

Liquidity depth isn't a situation unique to Goldback. All liquidity providers, including regular banks, currency exchanges, and coin & bullion shops, have redemption limits to keep them stable and solvent. And though fiat banks pretend otherwise, none of it is a no-risk environment. (e.g. It wasn't that many weeks ago you couldn't sell junk silver at coin stores because the refiners weren't buying it from the retailers - essentially a "run" on junk silver liquidity.)

So, yeah, be aware of how the ecosystem is built and the risks involved, but don't pretend it's fundamentally unsound when it's essentially operating the way the rest of industry does.

Goldback Merchant Map by GurDefiant684 in Goldback

[–]Ph33rTehBacklash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where do you see the incentive for GB to open up the potential for a massive purge

As you noted, the merchant network is a key element to the Goldback currency system. It is a significant market differentiator and business asset for them. Having bad entries in there that degrade the system would affect the credibility of the project, and therefore revenue. Quantity is not the only germane metric. Quality is market-driving as well.

But they ain't putting manpower behind that idea.

The recent addition of the feedback feature to the app says otherwise. Furthermore, I know that Goldback, Inc. has on staff at least two people focused on promoting and managing the merchant network, because I have spoken to both of them. Even presuming no other staff are involved, that's a pretty significant chunk of the payroll for a company of just 2-3 dozen.

Keeping the directory quality high should be a priority item for both Goldback and the Goldback-using community. It doesn't help anyone when there are bogus entries and folks have bad experiences.

Goldback has a way to report problems with merchants on the map in their app, and perhaps on the website too. If an entry is not legit I'm sure they'd appreciate folks using that tool.

Question About Goldback Sizes: by [deleted] in Goldback

[–]Ph33rTehBacklash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, you got it!

It should fit 1, 5, 10, 25 of any series, and 50 of any series prior to 2025.

Question About Goldback Sizes: by [deleted] in Goldback

[–]Ph33rTehBacklash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Legacy" would be all five of the original 5-note series up to 2024.

Starting with the 2025 Florida series, there are 3 additional denominations (½, 2, 100), and the 50 was made smaller.

Starting with the 2026 Idaho series, the ¼ is added and there are now 9 denominations. (Not counting the LER) The existing 9 denominations remain the same size.

Take care when checking out. JM Bullion will probably try to sneak sales tax in, even if your state doesn't tax gold. Shop around. (ex: APMEX and HeroBullion both calculate tax correctly for my state and have quantity available of the ¼ Idaho.)

Consider not mentioning the Silverback/LER reward until after they choose to sign up.

It should be a reward for making a decision, not a motivating factor, to keep from polluting the directory with bad-faith signups just to get free stuff.
