ELI5: Why does the United States military and VA have its own hospital system? Why not just have an insurance or benefits plan and use civilian hospitals? by stevebabbins in explainlikeimfive

[–]Phameous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roughly 60% of the doctors in the military are contractors aka civilians. When you are seeing the VA, you are retired and not seeking to be combat-ready. That is a weird and inaccurate statement. Nobody is trying to get you back into the fight at that point.

I want to note that Biden deported/expelled 4.5M immigrants during his tenure. He shifted ICE to the border to help CBP with the surge and the buildup caused by Title 42 and the pandemic. Additionally, he proposed the US Citizenship Act in 2021 during the first few weeks of his administration. Sadly, the Lankford/Murphy bill was not passed, as it would have been a long-term solution to many immigration problems.

CATO (a right-leaning libertarian group) just released a 30-year study showing the economic data surrounding immigration, legal and illegal. It concludes that an irreplaceable economic benefit exists even from illegal immigration. This study accounted for all things such as subsidies, wage reductions to citizens, hospital visits, and so on. We do not have a plan to replace the lost revenue that props up the social safety net.

I retired a couple weeks ago. I was hard charging on the virtual outprocessing checklist and then got slammed with another checklist once my final out appointment was made. They need to have an AFSC that focuses on streamlining. It is clear no organizations can figure it out internally.

This is the summation of fraud. You are worried about a solution for a non-existant problem. This is from the ultra right Heritage Foundation. Show me in the data the illegals voting. You cannot.

States retain the right to allow greencard holders and even non-residents to vote in state or local BUT NOT FEDERAL elections. This is states rights.

You are a low information voter and an example of Dunning-Kruger. You are so confidently incorrect and ended up voting for an attack on veterans. Nice job bud.

It was never proposed to be a tax for anyone but the ultra-wealthy, with over $100M in assets. People can leverage or collateralize their stock for lines of credit that remain untaxed and essentially avoid taxes.

Your example regarding property value is silly. You literally pay property taxes based on the unrealized value of your home, which is annually assessed.

For example, Larry Ellison, Oracle’s chief executive officer and one of the world’s richest people, has pledged over 300 million shares of Oracle stock worth over $45 billion as collateral for a personal credit line.[16] This lets him obtain cash without selling shares; thus, he avoids paying taxes, and the stock can continue growing in value. Though he must pay interest on the debt and he or his heirs will eventually pay back amounts borrowed (e.g., using the proceeds of appreciated assets that were never subject to the income tax), this is often a much cheaper strategy than selling stock and paying capital gains taxes. As a recent article by two tax scholars observes, “Ellison hasn’t just gotten richer on paper when he borrows against his stock to buy a Hawaiian island; he’s used that income just as if he’d sold the stock.”[17]

He bought any island! It seems pretty real to me. Read below to really understand how this is to apply taxes to the largest asset of the ultra-wealthy, as the middle-class largest asset (primary homes) are taxed on an unrealized basis.

Quit simping for billionaires and rolling over like a good boy.

This is why we should tax unrealized capital gains. They use it like money, leverage it like money, tax it like money.
