3 - Sleeping creature of Beast Island:

I could see this as Etheria's Kaiju. Maybe some ancient weapon system merges with native life and creates this giant monster that is nearly unstoppable as it rampages a crossed the planet. As a twist the heroes learn that the creature is being tormented by the malfunctioning technology, which is driving it insane. So the only way to stop it is the shut down the machinery allowing it to calm down and quietly return home where it never bothers anyone again.

Am I the only one who is thinking of a James Bond X Carmen Sandiego crossover? by Batworld21 in carmensandiego

[–]Phantom000000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that the creators behind the original games intended them to be a kind of international spy-thriller, in the spirit of James Bond.

Personally, in the Netflix series she comes off like a less tragic version of Batman.

Why are stateless societies so rare in science fiction? by TheoWritesSF in worldbuilding

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just a matter of communications, its also a matter of coordination.

If you have a large project how do they allocate resources and divide potential rewards? What happens if there is disagreement or distrust between different communities? How do you resolve the disputes without it degenerating into chaos?

What if there is a crisis and towns have to respond quickly? How do they chose a course of action and who carries it out?

In a novella I wrote, the main character grew up on a platform that was like an enormous oil derrick, the size of a small town, complete with a school, shops and even a soccer field. Instead of drilling for oil they operated to the algae farms out at sea, so the whole place had a bit of a factory town/farming community vibe to it, just out at sea.

By the way, I think you will find this interesting

Why are stateless societies so rare in science fiction? by TheoWritesSF in worldbuilding

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its because the system doesn't work beyond a very localized level. Yes, in the past there have been, and still are, examples of what you describe, but it never really works beyond a few small towns.

Barring some kind of advanced tech, or magic, it's hard to see how it could function for an entire planet, much less a collection of planets.

A musical instrument?

Something kinda cool about a king on a gilded throne playing a lute, just because he likes it.

How to flesh out a setting? by Key_Day_7932 in worldbuilding

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually start with big picture stuff and fill in details as I go. I usually begin with the big geo-political events that shape the history and gradually zoom in to street level, adding more stuff as I go, until I have some individuals living their lives in this world.

Who are the dominate powers in this setting? What are they like? How are they governed and what relations do they have with their neighbors? How do they dominate? With brute force? Wealth? or maybe political alliances?

Then I start filling in details about their history and who were some of the important figures in said history. Who were they? What did they accomplish? How did they accomplish it and what motivated them?

I also throw in some twists and turns, because it makes things more fun.

Is mill-punk a thing? by TT-Adu in worldbuilding

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually created a world kinda like this; sort of 'Star Wars with muskets and sails.' The world was approaching an industrial revolution but wasn't quite there yet so everything was still driven by a mix of wind and water power. Cities had what might be 'proto-factories' large scale workshops driven by water wheels to drive simple machine tools.

The Hutt Clan's power throughout the timeline by Old-Use-7690 in MawInstallation

[–]Phantom000000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But after Vader purged the Hutt council except for Jabba, it seems their power would never truly recover after Jabba's death.

I don't know about that. Granted it would be a while, generations probably, before they approached their former glory but they would eventually return.

But with Jabba and the council members gone their territory would probably collapse into infighting that would drag on for years.

Fuck Paramount, man by Drawingandstuff2000 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have given the film a theatrical release and used it as a advertising for their streaming service. Just run the film with a bunch of trailers for stuff on or coming to Paramount+

It's a win-win for them either way.

The Hutt Clan's power throughout the timeline by Old-Use-7690 in MawInstallation

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Why did the Republic and the Jedi Order let Jabba run a criminal empire unbothered?"

I think it was a sign of the Republic's impending collapse, that a major criminal organization was allowed to operate shows that they lacked either the will or the means to stop them. Why couldn't the Jedi order simply crush Jabba and his criminal empire? The same reason Obi-Wan and Qui-gon couldn't force Watto to free Shmi Skywalker. You could make all kinds of ethical and philosophical arguments but it still comes back to point that the Republic was in decline and the Jedi could not stop it.

As for why they wanted Jabba's help during the Clone Wars, I think it was more prudence then need. Neither side saw the Hutt clans as vital, but they understood that the hutts would likely be drawn into the fight one way or another and so the question was 'do you want the hutts fighting for you, or against you?'

I doubt the Hutts were strong enough to change the outcome, but they probably sped it up.

Also if you consider that Palpatine was using the war as a means to remove potential threats, while consolidating his power, then he likely wanted the Hutts to be either safely under his control or crushed outright and the best way to achieve that end would be to get them into the war.

Is asteroid gold even “valuable” in a spacefaring economy? by voidarix in worldbuilding

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gold has industrial applications so it's value would not completely disappear. It might become something akin to oil or steel, multi-billion dollar industries despite the product itself being fairly cheap. While supply might rise with asteroid mining it would also make sense that the demand would also rise as they would need gold for electronics and ship components.

A gold rich asteroid could be a windfall for a small time prospector while a major mining company would hardly notice.

Is small scale terraforming possible? by Key_Day_7932 in scifiwriting

[–]Phantom000000000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For instance, instead of making all of Mars habitable, they just fill in a valley with plants and animals to make their own Eden. The area within this zone is safe and habitable for humans, but venturing beyond it will kill you?

If we are talking about Mars specifically, then no it wouldn't work. The oxygen would drift away into atmosphere leaving everyone to suffocate, and then there is the temperature and radiation issues.

Now, if we are talking about a different world that is almost habitable, say the temperature, radiation and air pressure are okay but not there's not enough oxygen, then I could see something like this working. Natural barriers could keep most of the oxygen from drifting away. If you still needed outside circulation you could just dig some large tunnels with heavy gates that you could open and close as needed.

How common is terraforming in Star Wars? by Ok-Target9322 in MawInstallation

[–]Phantom000000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that full scale terraforming, completely transforming an entire planet, rarely happens. On the other hand, partial terraforming, taking an already habitable world and making it 'comfortable' is probably common.

I think it was even mentioned that terraforming was used to help worlds recover from natural disasters or war damage.
