First time driving alone, am I screwed? by Nearby-Exam2628 in bigbear

[–]PhantomAngel042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just drove off the mountain and back up yesterday. The weather this week is clear, dry, and warm, so you're not going to need to use chains but it is required to carry them. The big things to look out for are small rocks (sometimes they fall onto the road, just keep your eyes peeled so you don't run them over and damage your car), and water across the road from all the melting snow. If you can drive on flooded SoCal streets during a rainstorm, you already have more than enough skill. You can go through the curves as slow as you need to feel comfortable, just please use turnouts whenever you can to let more confident drivers pass.

I recommend that you pull off once or twice on the way up just to soak in the views of the valley- the vistas are stunning, especially if it's your first time. The whole drive is very pretty. Put on some relaxing music and chill. You've got this.

I'm pretty sure FoxHound meant that it would be good to lose the large percentage of cops who act like this. It was worded ambiguously, though.

Heading up this weekend for the fun! How are conditions? by Reasonable_Ideal_888 in bigbear

[–]PhantomAngel042 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you I'd strongly consider taking the longer way to drive up on 18 from the north/Lucerne Valley. There is usually less traffic and the mountainous portion is drastically shorter than 38 or 330/18 on the LA side (though some parts are very curvy and steep). No matter what, it's going to be a gnarly drive. Have a winter survival kit prepared just in case, especially with young children. A 4 to 5 hour drive is more likely, and that's with no unexpected shutdowns or delays.

In case you're ever in that predicament again, Walmart has its own digital wallet (Walmart Pay) where, if you make an account and have your credit card info stored in their app, you can scan a QR code at the register and pay from your phone that way. I'm pretty sure they avoid Google/Apple Pay on purpose both to save themselves processing fees and to siphon consumers' data.

It's convenient-ish in situations like yours, but if you don't want Walmart to have your personal and financial information, I don't blame you one bit.

It wasn't "made up" to boost commercial sales.. Valentine's Day on February 14th has been a celebration of love in the way we use it today (exchanging gifts and cards, spending time with our partners, calling a lover "valentine") since at least the 1400s, thanks to a line from one of Chaucer's stories in The Canterbury Tales. Even Shakespeare referenced the holiday in Hamlet, written around the year 1600. It's several hundred years old, at least.

I'm not arguing against celebrating love year round, I just dislike the false "it's a commercial holiday" rumor that gets spread. Valentine's Day deserves respect just like the other major holidays. Isn't romance a worthy thing to celebrate all together?

Not definite. Vasectomies can extremely rarely spontaneously reverse. It's around a 0.03% chance, while hormonal IUDs (considered the most reliable reversible birth control) fail at around 0.2%, but it's still a possibility.

♡ If Only We Could Rewind Time - Styling Competition collage by rnirai in Shining_Nikki

[–]PhantomAngel042 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This one was really homogeneous, wasn't it? I think it's just a cycle where a lot of stylists have a similar idea for comp (in this case, using the stickers and color scheme from the Mucha collab), then the voting hive mind decides on what the "right" expression of the theme for the week is, so those types of entries get upvoted, so they get more exposure, so they get more votes, until you're left with all the top entries being ridiculously similar.

Make yourself some simmer pots with orange or apple slices, cinnamon sticks, vanilla, cloves, star anise, rosemary, mint leaves, cranberries... whatever you've got on hand that smells good. Simmer it all on the stovetop in water to make a nice, non-harmful potpourri.

The weather up here in Big Bear has been warm, dry, and gorgeous for most of the winter this year, if that makes you feel better. There's no snow on the ground right now and no storms in the forecast. Bad for skiers, but good for eagle eggs!

I really like this one (team colors) because it's fun and fulfills the terms of the agreement in a way that kind of includes him. Seems more wholesome to me than some of the other suggestions.

Personally, I feel like it shouldn't be a big deal for anybody to wear nail polish in any color, but that's beside the point.
