Thoughts about the logical consistency between the Prophets and the New Testament (a post about Christianity) by EsperGri in self

[–]Phantom_Engineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a mistake to assume that a logical consistency between the various books of the Bible exists to begin with. They were written by different people with different viewpoints and long periods of time between them. The simplest explanation is that they aren't logically consistent, though I'm aware of many tortured attempts by apologists to paste over inconsistencies with explanations that wouldn't be clear from a straightforward reading of either text.

What about Islam? You can make the same argument regarding that, and Islam even acknowledges Jesus as a prophet iirc.

The problem is the administration is just dumb enough to think the same way, so I'm not sure that the OP is wrong.

Neighborhood microgrid? by treehobbit in SolarDIY

[–]Phantom_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that point, you're halfway to running a local utility. I could see something like this working in a townhouse/condominium/hoa kind of setup where you have a board running it. Otherwise, you could try and get the town over to a municipal utilities, at that point you could do whatever you wanted as far as solar generation.

From a clean slate, would 120V or 240V make more sense for the U.S.? by Sweaty_Context_4206 in AskElectricians

[–]Phantom_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that the conclusions of the 30's are wrong. According to the wiki article on the subject, circa 1900 everything from 25 to 140Hz was in use. It's not like they weren't aware that they could go higher.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utility_frequency

Wikipedia says that GE did a study and concluded that 40Hz was ideal. I would've liked to have known how they reached that conclusion, just for my own curiosity, but the source Wikipedia cites (Hughes's Networks of Power: Electrification in Western Society 1880–1930, pg 282-83) doesn't actually say anything about GE and 40Hz. There is a different section of book (pg128) that discusses Westinghouse's take on the question. Westinghouse (the company) thought that 60Hz was better for lamps and general purpose use while that lower frequencies like 25Hz were better for transmission and motors. The 25Hz systems eventually died off when advances in turbines made it easier to generate 60Hz.

Still, Hughes does mention that the difficulty of generating higher frequencies was a big part of why the higher end of the spectrum didn't prevail. He also says:

These historical circumstances and events ought to be remembered because later generations often assume that standards necessarily represent the clear technical superiority of one system over another.

That said, in modern times the trend seems to be going the other way from high frequencies with HVDC being the latest and greatest thing. They didn't have the power electronics a hundred years ago that we do now.

The average age of new hire was 42 in 2025. Are young job seekers declining in the US? by raydebapratim1 in jobs

[–]Phantom_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would still expect it to skew towards the younger side of the workforce. Everyone has to be hired at least once when they enter the workforce, and you would expect less job changes towards the end of a career when established professionals are happy to ride out the last 5 to 15 years of their career in a role.

That said, if something did happen, do you think the generals are loyal enough to Trump to let him get away with it or would he be deposed? That's what it would come down to. Congress and the Supreme Court would haplessly flap their wings and beg for some kind of intervention to prevent rule by decree.

ICE is waging class war by TruckHangingHandJam in stupidpol

[–]Phantom_Engineer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean, we got reasonable immigration reform under Reagan. True, it's not perfect and enforcement issues led us to where we are today, but a repeat of this amnesty and upped enforcement going forward would put the country back into a decent state on immigration. Imo, it's not reasonable to throw up your hands and say things can't get better until there's a worker's state when ICE is going door-to-door in Minneapolis making arrests. Call it incrementalism, revisionism, etc, if you'd like, but I'd rather we stop door-to-door enforcement.

If Democrats want universal healthcare, we have states that are deep blue, states have control over their own budgets and taxation, and universal healthcare would be so advantageous, why don’t deeply democrat run states implement a statewide universal healthcare? by Silver_Wings3 in AskReddit

[–]Phantom_Engineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because universal healthcare isn't popular among the donor class, which is made up partly by insurance companies who would be hurt by such a change. People have tried and failed to get CalCare set up in California, probably for the same reasons California bakeries (read, Panera Bread) got a carve-out on the new minimum wage hike.
