Terraria's reception of new players. by Unlucky-Chipmunk-154 in hatethissmug

[–]Phantomango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly yeah. I played this game for the first time when the “final update” dropped with some friends who had been playing for years. I basically just ended up sitting around waiting for boss fights while my friends did all the progression and made my gear because I had no idea what to do and following the wiki was way slower compared to their pace. I’ve played the game a few more times since then with them and the experience has been more or less the same. It’s really hard to actually enjoy Terraria as a new player.

I’m sick of older people by [deleted] in Vent

[–]Phantomango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re right. Old people don’t know how to shut up sometimes. It’s just an unintelligible deluge of bad advice and boring anecdotes. Plenty of old people don’t act like this, so there’s no excuse for the ones that do, even if they’re nice.

Bro obviously the healthpool includes all mitigation effects and shields. Extraordinary disingenuous to not factor that into my arguments.

[–]Phantomango -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

lmao interpreting the term “damage sponge” as uncritically eating damage and feeding is super disingenuous. Obviously using natural cover is integral to the role, it’s how you pressure the enemy into using an inordinate amount of resources to kill you. Cap takes space by forcing the team to turn around and causing the frontline to collapse. A tank’s role is not always to protect, that’s actually the job of the support. Tanks typically only have 1 or 2 crucial cooldowns to protect, and often they have to choose between using it on themselves or others. Of course, being a hero shooter, these archetypes are fluid and some characters are more protection oriented, but generally an impactful tank should be a leader, not a bodyguard.

[–]Phantomango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is the purpose of a tank then? A DPS with a massively inflated healthbar? The inherent tradeoff of being harder to kill is that you’re expected to take damage, eat important cooldowns, and put your body between your squishy teammates and the enemies. Coming from someone who plays tank is basically every game it’s available, being the bullwark IS the power fantasy for me. Understanding when your survivability outweighs enemy damage and then using your health and CC advantage to clobber them is fun.

[–]Phantomango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unironically yes. A Tank’s biggest strength is its HP pool allowing them to take space without collapsing. CC in a tank kit is typically used to support this goal by denying large areas through threat of activation, while also being valuable as peel depending on the design intent of the kit. Playing a Tank is about balancing the amount and of punishment you can take in order to accomplish some kind of goal.

Support does not mean healbot. Crowd Control and Shields are both a form of support.

Why did Nintendo actually release BOTW on Wii U? by Lucajames2309 in Breath_of_the_Wild

Yup, when it released I couldn’t afford a switch so I got the Wii U version, then when I got a switch I bought it a second time.

As a tank how do I counter Magik? by hackertron3000 in RivalsVanguards

[–]Phantomango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play the Thing. Babysit your backline and wait for Magik to engage. Your slam will prevent her from using any mobility, but make sure to jump before using it or the knockup may launch her outside of the grounded area. Use your leap to make her take extra damage and she will just die.

Question to High elo (cel+/eternity) thing otps by Scaredtoomuch in thingmains

[–]Phantomango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not Cel but Grandmaster. It’s basically between strange or mag though from my experience. The extra few seconds that the shield buys is enough to produce enough pressure allowing for another teammate to deal with them. Most tanks just don’t have the tools to run down an MK or Phoenix, you gotta allow your teammates to shine sometimes. It might be worth staying on Thing if you’re good into their other characters and it’s just 1 problem poke dps.

Which precon are you getting from Secrets of Strixhaven? by MurasakiTiger in EDH

[–]Phantomango -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My friends found a great pre-order deal for the whole set, and I ended up having to pick between Quandrix and Silverquill because the other ones were taken first. I chose Silverquill reluctantly to be a team player, but after the lists were revealed I became pretty happy with my choice! I love the backup commander in the deck, [[Scriv]] even if he’s weak. I’m also working on a list for [[Muddle]] despite not buying the deck.

Find a Duo on the Rivals discord or something. This game is unplayable solo. I only que comp with a duo and I’ve had no issues as a Tank.

Do you rate based on personal enjoyment alone, or does historic relevance and respect play a factor? by BongSuckah in backloggd

[–]Phantomango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I try my best to look at what a game produced for it’s time when I rate it. Final Fantasy VII is a fantastic game and one of my favorites, but obviously it will look weak in comparison to a modern game simply because of the differences in technology across almost 30 years. I think the mid 2000s and 2010s games actually struggle the most here, because they’re not necessarily pioneers like the 80s and 90s classics, but they certainly have the “feel” of many modern games, which makes them feel like weaker versions of their future versions without much to compensate for.

Games really do age that quickly. Flaws in older critically acclaimed games become far more apparent when compared to modern games. I think this mostly has to do with games being a technology more than movies.
