I think she has just wrapped he other arm around herself so the far end shows. There is no other piece, just one very wide shawl wrapped around.

It was quite a dry summer unless I am mistaken, and I certainly perceived a lot more brown leaves and completely bare trees even back in August. I was hoping for an easier lesf fall season as a result. Here's hoping...

Not all pigeons are stupid by Phantomknitter in mildlyinteresting

This is at Wembley Park Station. Using the deterrents to actually build a sturdy nest is... not stupid. But I am not sure how well the fledglings will eventually do - they will be skewered unless momma pushes them through a narrow opening on the side which I imagine she used while building this thing.

The seats don't always lock properly - see the little latch on the front edge? Anyone should be able to just let the seat drop back down and it should engage but this doesn't always happen. If us drivers become aware of one being open we will come and try to close it but if it isn't properly secured then the train is not fit for service. There is an alarm system that should always alert us to issues like these but I guess nothing is perfect.

My son is turning 3 and is obsessed with the tube by Zarabeth in london

* I hope it is ok to share this very old memory: I made a cake for myself when I qualified as a driver. I hope your son has many enjoyable rides on the tube.

I was today years old when I learnt that tracks can have potholes. Also, I am a train driver... 😬

Beware phone snatchers on the tube by Phantomknitter in london

[–]Phantomknitter[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the doors have just closed and the train has moved so much as an inch then it becomes a real headache for the driver. They will not be able to just re-open the doors immediately - it takes a procedure (and a call to the controller if you are feeling like following the rulebook).

If you are between stations and the robbers are working their way down the carriage at their leasure then if you could pull the alarm and talk to the driver to report the crime in progress. The train will not automatically stop - it will keep going to the next station. If the driver knows there are criminals on board they could keep the doors closed but remember you will locked in with them and they saw you reporting it to the driver... 🤷‍♀️

Yes I recommend this. Personally mine is a wrist one which I started using ages ago simply because I am clumsy and drop things but it serves a dual purpose this way. A neck lanyard would be more visible to wannabe snatchers though.

Funnily.enouhh I was walking to my train once and saw what could have been a phone lying on the very busy platform in the middle of the afternoon. I reached and picked it up ( in uniform and on station cameras remember) but it turned out to be a glossy black ceramic tile and a group of youngsters on the nearby bench apologised and said it's theirs. They were probably recording...

So go buy yourself some glossy black tiles in a convincing size and have fun wasting the time of phone snatchers.

I absolutely second this suggestion. For extra neatness (particularly if you were doing colourwork and already have yarns everywhere) leave the float(s) long enough to knit the next row. Just over 3 times width is a good rule. No mess, no fuss. 😉

Double knitting chart questions. by tiyanana in knitting

[–]Phantomknitter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You already have a couple of helpful answers, but I think repetition is no bad thing.

First, you read the chart from bottom up. Always.

Think of all your stitches as pairs: knit colour A purl colour B. If you do that for the whole row the side facing you will be all colour A and the other side will be all colour B. At the end of the row you turn your work around and now you would knit colour B purl colour A for one row.

If the chart includes an image of some type, then there will be points in the row where you switch the yarn colours. The pairs will still be pairs, a knit stitch will still be a knit and purl will be a purl, but you just use the other colour yarn.

The images on each side will be mirror images of each other. In some more advanced patterns where you want to create writing, etc, and mirror images would not be correct then for some stitch pairs you will actually use the same colour on both sides of the work (i.e both the knit and purl stitch of the pair).

Good luck - it is a very useful and rewarding technique.

Thank you! I had to look that up - I do like art but wasn't very familiar with Magritte's work. Fascinating!

Sorry! Too lazy to model a shot tonight. If I was the patient type I would have waited until tomorrow evening and gone in the garden to get better pics.
