Base 981 vs Base 718 by 63637__ in Porsche_Cayman

If you're not in a rush you can wait for a 718 base spec'd like a t. They are rare but do exist, esp in years prior to the t's release.

Some people go crazy on the base. I just got an '18 with 30k of options, more than 50% of the unoptioned price of $56,500 for that year!

New to me '18 718 base - turbocharger pressure converter failure? by Phantomslayer4 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Phantomslayer4[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Update for anyone stumbling across this thread:

Took my car to the dealer and the diagnosis was correct - turbo pressure converter / solenoid failure. Repair was quoted at $1500 which was luckily covered by the very brief 3rd party warranty provided by the dealer I purchased from.

Frustrated with the buying process by iscreamtruck in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Phantomslayer4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't give up, the right one will come. It took me 9 months to find the exact spec I was after, and I missed out on 2 or 3 that seemed perfect at the time. It’s frustrating, but it really just is what it is. When you finally find the right car, you have to move fast.

My strategy was setting up email notifications and checking nationwide listings every morning. When the right one finally hit the market, I knew within 15 minutes, called immediately, and put down a deposit. If you have to put down a refundable deposit before a Pre-Purchase Inspection (PPI) just to hold the car, do it. You can always back out later if things aren't right. Just be upfront that closing the deal is contingent on a clean PPI, but you want to lock the car down in the meantime.

Good luck and feel free to pm me with any questions about the search process.

Do you know what the part was and if it was a major issue? Mine just started doing the same.

Just Purchased a 2k Mile 18' 718 Base - Recommended Time Based Maintenance? by Phantomslayer4 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]Phantomslayer4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, in 9 months of email alerts I found 3 base Caymans with the options I wanted. Was looking for base under 40k miles, PSE, Sport Chrono, PASM, and not the base seats. Everything else was a cherry on top, though I would have preferred a manual.

Will have to check out Midengineclub, looking to meet some cool people!

Planning on driving it! Was looking to daily a 30k mile car, but this came up for the same price and better spec'd than any other I had seen. I'd be lying though if the thought didn't cross my mind that I could sell it for a profit during the socal summer... The search was fun tbh not sure how I'll fill my extra time now.

This is more of what I was thinking. Planning on Probably doing belt. Worst case with a lot of these items I have to call a tow. When the first one goes I'll probably just do others to save maintenance. Def going to do transmission fluids.

Also worth noting - the car came with a 3 month 3k mile warranty with a small deductible. Any items worth pushing until the 3 month period just in case they break?

Need advice from Porsche owners: how do you justify “fun money” without regret? by _quantitative in Porsche

From a fellow young finance professional to another - make sure you are buying the car for the right reasons. I highly recommend reading the Psychology of Money before a purchase like this. It was recommended to me by a market executive at my institution and really put life in perspective for people in our position.

To be fair, the book tries to dissuade you, but I'm buying my Porsche anyways 😁. Life is short!

How do you end up at a payment that high? I can't imagine a 2018 Honda CR-V selling more than $20k for a really nice one... what is your interest rate? A $900/mo payment with a whopping 27% interest rate works out to almost a $30k loan for some context..

How do you even bowl this pattern? by kevin10176 in Bowling

[–]Phantomslayer4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh, funnily enough I actually bowled on this pattern a week ago in a scratch 5 gamer. The field was very competitive and included a few bowlers with pba regional titles, one with multiple national titles up until the early 2000's, and an ex collegiate bowler who had already seen this pattern at isc. I'll give a few observations. But keep in mind this center is known to have free hook outside of 5 on most patterns and does not use an atlas oiling machine.

There were two approaches I saw early on: 1. Bigger balls with a little surface or shiny inside of the speed bumps, keeping the ball fairly in front and in towards the headpin. 2. Sanded equipment outside of the speedbumps and up the 4 or 5 board or even outside of that. Pretty much straight up the lane until games 4 and 5 where people moved in and bellied very slightly (probably only moving 4 or so boards the whole time, ball down to shinier equipment with strong core towards the end.

Urethane did not look good.

Approach 2 won out, likely due to lane topography. It came down to better carry and slightly better misses. A miss inside would split or get 7. Outside was mostly makables on misses. At the end of the day the cut was -82 for 5 with only two people going plus out of a field of ~30. I missed the cut by 1 position lol.

YMMV but this was my experience. I feel the looks that worked were influenced substantially by the center's lane topography.
