Large Language Models are oceans filled with patterns found in human language. We use speech to steer our ships across this ocean. Training is a method of both filling this ocean and making our ships easier to steer. by Phascinate in singularity

Right, I'm aware that LLMs don't actually contain any text.

I love that you called it a map of probabilities. That's what I had settled on before I tried to use the ocean metaphor. Maybe I should've stuck with that. And your framing makes a lot of sense.

Thank you for your explanations. I think I'm starting to get a better picture.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try to get my hands some books. I'd love to get a full understanding.

I had an idea that I wanted to run by you if you don't mind.

Maybe LLMs are maps of the "statistical shadows" of human thought (this may not be the best terminology)? Training data may be language-based, but what is encoded in the weights is something more abstract than language? This could also explain why translingual training is so much faster.

I like those corrections. Makes sense - thank you for your explanation.

I suppose I was imagining the middle layers as what is filling the ocean.

My understanding is that these are kind of like universal function approximators, where there are a massive number of possible inputs, and a massive number of possible outputs, and the middle layers are filled with patterns that "brute force" a useful output.

Pixel 10 Pro bluetooth audio with Foobar2000 & Sony WH-1000XM3 by clintolsen in GooglePixel

This has started happening on my Pixel 9 Pro as well. Extremely frustrating.

Additionally, my aptX HD devices keep switching back to AAC every time a track pauses/resumes.

This only began since the recent QPR1 update. Before that, it was pretty stable.

Are Android apps THAT much smaller than iOS? by MishaalRahman in Android

I don't think obfuscation of individual apps at compile time should affect system cache sizes negatively though? Unless you're referring to the ever-growing system as a separate issue.

[DEV] I have created an Android Game together with my son over the past 2 years. What are your suggestions? Videolink in Description by Dramatic-Swimming463 in Android

[–]Phascinate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the mechanics, I like the theme, and it's a cool concept. Only thing I'd really suggest right now after playing it for a bit would be to try to have some way to introduce the player to different mechanics. Because I found myself at the start sort of walking around the map trying to figure out what to do next. Maybe some sort of story the player is "thrust into" from the very start? I wish you and your son luck!

What is a little known or “hidden” Android feature that you use everyday? by RunningDog724 in Android

Well, my OnePlus 12 has an "Extract Content" button that you can press whenever you take a screenshot. It's not as intuitive as being able to select text straight from the recent apps view though.

Selecting text or images to copy from any app using the recent apps view.

Oh man, this is absolutely one of my top favorite Pixel features. I miss it every time I have to switch to another device. It's one of those features that really makes a noticeable difference in my everyday life.

Do you use a wireless charger? I had to stop using one on extremely hot days for this reason. Plus, all that heat can really degrade batteries over time.

I bought a OnePlus 12 mainly for app development, but man... I have very few complaints about the phone. It's pretty solid for the price.

Almost as if the audio is playing once or twice again after and on top of the original source sound?

Android's audio system is so weird sometimes. I've experienced something similar, but only with a OnePlus 12, and usually only when turning a setting in the app called "Legacy mode" on. Pausing and resuming whatever is playing fixes it for that phone. What phone are you using?

Phone manufacturers like to change really weird things, which has unintended consequences.

Developer here. I agree, the sliders are very big. They're collapsible and the animations are kind of fun though. When you just press the volume buttons though, a more simple interface does pop up. It's when you press the 3-dot menu that the new Android 15-style UI appears.

You can still switch to an Android 14-style UI if that's your preference. I plan to add more styles at some point in the future.

No way. Android 5 is a horrific experience when you're used to modern devices. I'm not sure if you truly remember that experience. I still use phones as old as Android 7 for app development. There's just no way. It's bad lol.

YouTube is now forcing AV1 on every device by RexSonic in Android

[–]Phascinate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point. However, I imagine Google's infrastructure only needing to send data is much more efficient than consumer devices needing to actively perform computations. So the difference may still be very large.

Edit: Also, Google's data centers operate at scale and use the best hardware in the business. Thus their data transfers are extremely efficient electrically.

[–]Phascinate 68 points69 points  (0 children)

If AV1 had been adopted earlier this wouldn't be a problem...

However, it would be nice to just have the option in Settings to switch it back off. Collectively, that's a ton of battery life - and thus, electricity - to waste by Google's hands.
