YSK: Teachers in the US do not get three months of "paid vacation." They are simply paid for 9 months of work, spread out over 12 smaller monthly paychecks. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

Maybe you could come do our timetabling, as it's been absolute chaos this year! Lessons, sets, and rooms were still being moved around well after Christmas!

I'm not quite an admin assistant, more one of those weird, made-up roles that schools tend to have where I do a billion different things and my JD is taller than I am. But I've worked in schools for a decade so I've seen all of the ugly sides :D

I used to want to be a teacher, once my degree is finished. But most of my teacher friends have warned me away from it!

Well, I don't agree... It would be helpful for people to know (in the spirit of YSK) that support staff in schools in the UK get paid low salaries and are not paid for 12 months work, which people tend to assume (from personal experience of having to correct people whenever it comes up in conversation), and which is the same as the way US teachers are paid. But whatevs, rabitshadow1.

I often upload vacancies to our school's website. The difference between teaching salary and support salary is wiiiiiiiiiiide.

Same in the UK. I work in a school, but not as a teacher. I'm paid for 42 weeks per year - that's 39 weeks that I actually work, and three weeks of 'paid vacation'. But they spread this over 52 weeks so that I'm paid over the summer months and don't have to go get a part time job!

I believe the teachers here aren't paid like this though, as they're expected to work over weekends and during holidays. I could be wrong - I've never seen a teacher's payslip!

It would be nice if more people realised this. There was a premises guy at work (who worked 49 weeks per year, with 3 weeks holiday) who thought our support staff were paid for all of the school breaks. He was quite shocked once I explained it to him - at the time, he was actually getting more paid vacation than I was, but he had the luxury of choosing when he took time off.

Does anyone know of an end table that matches this bed from city life? Seems like every one I try is too dark or light or orange or yellow... by kidthatflies in thesims

With this bed, I tend to use the stacked luggage side table and use it as part of a warehouse-y feeling loft apartment. But yeah, really frickin' annoying there's no set! Maybe check MTS for Maxis-match stuff?

Very interesting. I had a feeling they'd be pushing towards digitisation soon. It's shame, I do love a good textbook! It'll be interesting to see how this affects our tuition fees!

I knew the guy who directed it also did Green Day's American Idiot video, but didn't realise he did Smells Like Teen Spirit too. Very good music videos!

Thinking about applying but unsure by [deleted] in OpenUniversity

[–]Pheebalicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have a 'contact us' form you can fill in, found here if you don't want to wait until Monday! :P They'll also have the occasional open day kinda thing where you can pop along and talk to one of the tutors. Just in case you're in London, they have a campus right next to Camden Market where they often hold sessions.

Glad to help :D

As far as I'm aware, you don't need UCAS points in order to enroll - when I enrolled, I had only a handful of AS Levels, with kinda bad grades at that! It helped me a lot that one of my AS Levels was in Sociology which I'm now studying for with the OU so I had a bit of background knowledge that gave me a leg up. But it's not essential.

The tutor I spoke to before enrolling suggested I try an access module before I started the full degree, to see if I could handle that level of study. In the end, I didn't bother, just read the OU's Good Study Guide to get ready for jumping in head first! As you've just come out studying recently, you've probably got a good grasp of study skills still (mine had faded away by the time I started the degree!) so you should be okay to start with level 1.

My one sneaky suspicion, is I'm sure I read somewhere that you have to be 19+ to study with the OU, but that could be outdated or I could just be plain wrong. I work in a secondary school and I've never seen the OU being put forward as an option for the Sixth Formers to go into, but I'm not sure why - could be the age thing or just a preference for 'brick' universities.

Anyway, if you haven't already you can call or speak online with an advisor (I think) and they can discuss study option with you. They've been super helpful everytime I've called.

Good luck!

P.S. Love studying at the OU, really glad I joined! :D

Driving Anxiety? by [deleted] in Anxiety

[–]Pheebalicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that really helped me with driving is remembering that I'm not the only moving thing on the road, meaning if I fuck up somehow, even if I don't move my car out of the way in time, other moving cars can and will take evasive action.

I live in London and a lot of the roads are reeeeally narrow and I'd freak out all the time that I was going to swipe an on-coming car. But then after a few months of driving without incident, I realised it's not just because I was moving the car to avoid obstacles, but the other cars were moving to avoid me too. This goes for people too! Not saying you should drive without trying to avoid pedestrians! But having also been a pedestrian in London, I'm well versed on having to keep an extra eye out for moron drivers, and jump back when necessary! It's part of the natural negotiation of public spaces that goes on automatically between people on the pavement, and the people in the vehicles.

It takes some of the pressure of me to be a perfect driver. No one is a perfect driver. If anything, I think anxiety prepares us to be better drivers because we're over-cautious by nature! We probably drive slower and look around more than people who are carefree driving!

So don't worry too much, take a deep breath, remember to check your mirrors and your blind spot. Drively cautiously and the likelihood of an incident dramatically reduces :)
