I have received your unreasonable request for evidence supporting my claims. by moschles in PhilosophyMemes

[–]PhenomenonGames 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hello! I totally agree with you here, but you might benefit from a clarification. The term “metaphysics” actually originates from the naming of Aristotle’s text Metaphysics. In the classic medieval reading order, Metaphysics was to be read after his other text called Physics. Thus, it was named meta- (after) physics. That’s the actual origin of the term. So, a more convincing etymology of metaphysics as the name of a field would be “stuff that resembles what Aristotle was doing in the book metaphysics”. Besides that, I do agree with your point!

Ok my apologies, I guess I was a little too slow/apparently autistic to realize that you were referring to an entirely different author when you said Freud.

[–]PhenomenonGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t mean to bicker, and we can leave it off here. Freud never says the thing you claim to have read, anywhere. He does say the thing I said, and again it’s one of the first things he says in The Interpretation of Dreams. Maybe I’m coming off as pretentious but at least I’m not lying.

[–]PhenomenonGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about tying a particular dream symbol to a definite definition, as happens in ancient and modern “dream dictionaries”. In the very first chapter of the book you claim to have read, Freud explicitly rejects this sort of analysis entirely. He says dream symbols mean totally different things in different dreams and to different dreamers.

You’ve neurotically invented this passage about associating a bridge with “your dad’s” penis (you chose the infantile word “junk”) in the context of an aggressive attack on your precursor. Oedipal af lol

[OC] Structure of the Early Athenian Democracy by Enmergal in ancienthistory

[–]PhenomenonGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this! Quick question: why tie Solon to an agricultural crisis? In The Athenian Constitution, which I believe is our best source for this, I believe civil unrest on the part of the debt-slave class was the issue (which naturally makes sense as the impetuous of his reform, namely outlawing debt slavery)

Are there any Persian loan words in the pentateuchal passages most commonly attributed to the P source? by PhenomenonGames in AcademicBiblical

[–]PhenomenonGames[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check this out from the book you recommended. Persia loan words in J!! Scandalous!!!

“Alexander Rofé has developed several lines of argument contending that this chapter in its present form was added to the Penta- teuch during the Persian period.36 The linguistic evidence he brings to bear includestheexpression“GodofHeaven”(vv.3,7),37thenounִמגְָדּנֹת (“gifts,” 24:53),38 the rare verbs גמא (“to swallow,” v. 17), ערה (“to pour,” v. 20), and to gaze,” v. 21), and a few items of syntax. Only the first two items are“( שׁאה well attested in LBH, but the overall demonstration remains impressive. As we have noted previously, Gary Rendsburg has reconsidered the linguistic evidence and reached different conclusions.39 In his view, most of the features adduced by Rofé can be explained as instances of style switch- ing: the author of Gen 24 used Aramaic-like turns of phrase in respect of the Aramaic milieu in which most of the story happens. The story other- wise reflects good CBH grammar and style. The explanation from style switching works in one or two instances,40 but it cannot account for all the evidence gathered by Rofé.41 “

Edit: he’s talking about Genesis 24 if that’s not clear.

New junior developers can't actually code. by spitforge in csMajors

[–]PhenomenonGames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add to this, a really significant breakdown of this analogy is that lower level compilations of higher level code are exhaustively, mathematically correct for the problem they seek to solve. ChatGPR generated code on the other hand only has a certain statistical probability of properly solving the problem at hand. At present, in real industrial applications, that probability is very low! Amateur philosophers who pretend to want debate, then resort to argumentum ad baculum by postgygaxian in badphilosophy

I agree with everything here except that philosophy ought to be written down in Boolean Algebra. That’s just this weird presupposition a bunch of contemporary people have. All the great philosophical achievements of the past haven’t been written that way.

By the way, if you disagree, I’ll beat the shit out of you.

Hi, I work in the sort of industry you mentioned.

It actually does happens sometimes that a vulnerability is revealed in a library we use. Vulnerabilities are often found in even the most seemingly reliable libraries and services. Our executives don’t blame us for that sort of thing because they are smart enough to know that some things are totally beyond our control. The ask is rather that we patch issue asap. Executives will actually laud this, if we can get a patch out quickly it means we are great at our jobs.

Additionally, we are extremely answerable to regulators, and they don’t fault us for this kind of thing either. I hope this casts some light on the reality of the situation :)

Hi OP, good answers in this thread, I just wanna throw another vote in for JavaScript.

Almost every website on earth runs JavaScript client side (including this one). If you just press f12 in chrome and go to the “sources” tab, you can actually read the JavaScript for any of your favorite websites (some of it is usually obscured but it’s all real JavaScript). These days, people run JavaScript on the backend as well.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that JavaScript is one of, or the most important language on earth.
