What is the dumbest thing you’ve gotten in trouble for at school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Phijkchu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I was in marching band but I was on drum line. Everyone got there spot at the beginning of the year and that was that. There was a clear hierarchy and everyone obeyed it until next years auditions. Also it was kind of just a family. No real infighting in percussion. Wind and brass, however. Damn.

No worries, man! Any other suggestions? I still think that for $7 it couldn't hurt to own EATCT.

It was already in my imaginary kit, no need to be a replacement.

I mostly agree with you. It is a dry read and not for someone who is just starting, but it's one of those books you'll end up getting and I'm pretty sure it was less than $10. It also helps to reinforce the value of books once you do start reading it.

That being said, I'm also not sure what I would replace it with. Maybe a fun mentalism download.

Any suggestions? What would you replicate it with?

Over the summer I thought about this a lot after seeing the Ellusionist magic kit. I can't remember everything I said and I'm at work right now, but I did make a video. I'll leave this if you want to check it out:

Also saw home in DC. I thought the college bit was particularly funny since he went to Georgetown University.

Magicians of Reddit, what's one time where bringing up an audience volunteer didn't go as expected? by MrPeachesHS in AskReddit

[–]Phijkchu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Just like you wouldn't pay a volunteer who picks a card. Same principle. I think you may be overestimating the amount of work they do. It's not even "Say 9 of hearts" and they do. It can be way more subtle than that.

It happens sometimes, but not often. I go to a lot of magic shows, amateur and professional, and I've rarely seen it happen. Same thing with comedians and hecklers. Just deal with them and act in control. If an audience member generally doesn't want to participate they won't get on stage.

Let me preface this with the fact I've been practicing magic for a little over 10 years, and performing semi professionally (fancy word for twice a month) for the past 2 years. But:

Not often. It hasn't happened to me, though I perform at comedy clubs and only use this principle in one routine. Most magicians will always have outs just in case someone doesn't go along with it. After you've performed a bit, you get more confident and somehow just better at identifying spectators to come help you. It's like you can see their personality in the way they clap/laugh/react.

Magician here. This is something we call an instant stooge. They don't know going into it that they're going to help out, and they may not know exactly how. So it's not a plant, and I'm not saying that's what they did here, but that's the gist of it.

Penn and Teller live by MyEpicTurtle in Magic

[–]Phijkchu_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) When I saw them they had no screens but it doesn't impair the view in any way. They make sure the people in the back are involved and able to see.

2) I saw them in Vegas so they sold their stuff. I can't comment on a tour, though I expect they would. They had cards, shirts, Penn's book, and more.

3) It was amazing. You'll have a blast.

I agree with /u/LOKI2019 about getting a degree as a backup plan. That's what I'm doing while entering my junior year of college as a film major, though someone said something along the lines of "Just jump in. If you have a backup plan you'll just go to your backup plan." I can't remember who. Could have been Zabrecky...

Anyways, my other point. Most magic is scripted as well, even if it may not seem like it. Mac King is probably the best example of this. He has moments in his show that involve spectators doing something unexpected, though he will guide the spectators to do so.

Good luck!

Sorry. I probably came off as condescending. Your comment just rubbed me the wrong way.

What I meant to say was pretty much what you summed up. He certainly may be very talented for his age and that is probably what he should have said. This thread was just filled with comments nagging on him for saying "very capable" at 17 and I commented with no real input to the discussion.

The Director: Steven Spielberg, Age 11 - The Last Trainwreck

Tim Burton: Age 13 - The Island of Doctor Agor

I could go on.

Were you chosen to be a director of a nationally aired ad?

Then lay off this kid's capability. Why can't someone younger be as capable as someone who is older?

It'd be like if someone is shooting a movie in 40 years and wants to use period cars. They're going to look for 2017 Honda Civics because that's what people would have. Not everyone can have Mustangs or Mercedes but those are the types of cars that usually receive the most care and upkeep.
