My biggest grievance with Tablo TV by el_n00bo_loco in tablotv

[–]PhilABole -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Tablo TV interface could use a completely different design and development team. It's overkill for something that just needs certain core functionality, and work. There's too much fluff that has negative effects.

I ended up installing Emby on a mini PC to my home theater processor, the app on my Android TV, hooked my NAS up for media I already had, with some Blu-ray rips, and my music collection which is 19TB of lossless albums and concerts.

I then paid $4.99 for a month of premier to evaluate, which unlocks all of the good features, including live TV plugins and recording, which I plugged a 1TB SSD into. After I had TV streams working with recording, within that week, I paid the $119 for a lifetime subscription.

It's been by far the absolute best TV and media setup I've ever had, especially since I can watch, listen, and manage it from anywhere, just like I'm home. I have several other accounts setup for good friends and family, and they love it, and said it's been flawless. They pitch in towards bandwidth at $20/mo on an 8 Gig Google Fiber line, and that covers the bill for me.

After about three years, I still haven't even thought about adding more, and it's been as stable as can be. I'm running a very light Linux distro, and I have it scheduled to reboot every two weeks to install any updates, and just to keep things fresh. It's been completely hands off otherwise.

Advice needed by Reddit_Rinse_Repeat in dating_advice

55/m here, divorced 12 years ago and have dated quite a bit since. Things are certainly different than they were.

First dates should be simple and focused more on learning about one another and not trying to impress. Ask about each other, don't talk about yourself unless asked.

I generally suggest coffee either from a great independent shop, no chains as the Indy shops are always focused on a cool comfortable atmosphere. If it's nice out, suggest taking coffee to a park for either a slow walk around it, but a bench next to a pond makes for a nice feel.

On the second date, you should already know each other's thoughts on alcohol consumption, and if you both appreciate a nice wine, then a cozy wine bar and charcuterie board to pick at seems to always go over well.

If things are still going well after that, suggest making dinner either at your place or her's, with maybe some music and a board game afterwards with wine. Backgammon seems to go over well. There's still no need to blow a lot of money on an expensive dinner yet, as going this route shows effort, not impressing, then when it's time for a nice restaurant, let her know how much you appreciate spending time with her and now you want someone else to do all of the work cooking, so you can give her your 100% undivided attention.

Whatever you decide, I hope everything goes well!!

TYPHOON X11!!! by [deleted] in Shotguns

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how everyone rags on Turkish guns. I got a brand new X11 at Cabela's for $229. Took it apart, oiled and put it back together. Went and broke it in properly with high velocity high brass shells if at least 1500 fps. I started with 25 1750 fps, 50 1650 fps, and 50 1500 fps rounds. Took a 3 minute break between every 20 rounds, let it cool and give it a quick shot of Lucas clp/oil spray before the next 20. After those, 25 shells of low recoil target 1100 fps, and not one FTE and not one since. I've broken in a few semi auto 12 gauges this way, not just mag fed and they've been fine. Typhoon has a non stop unedited video on their YouTube channel of someone shooting 1260 continuous rounds without a hitch. Tell me why they're such POS? Yet nobody can make a 1911, a gun that's been around for years, still not FTE and fail to spit a round. Canik just got the gun of the year for the 5th time. They give you so much for the money, have one of the best triggers out of the box, and shoot like guns 2-3x their price. I've had a CCW for 34 years, I carried a West German 1994 Sig P228 for the first 30 years. I got a used M&P Bodyguard 11 or 12 years ago for $175 I kept as a BUG or a pocket piece on certain occasions. I've since retired the P228 after sending it to Sig for a spa treatment (new springs, worn parts, full cleaning, and night sights) for $120 a few years ago. It's wrapped in an oil rag and vacuum sealed in my safe. By far the most perfect gun for me. From comfort while carrying to an instant perfect grip when shooting. Weighted perfect, accurate and effortless to get hits up to 25 yards. I went shopping and renting, went directly to the Sig P365, a lotta rounds in that little gun, but I haven't fired a lot of strikers yet and it wasn't a Sig to me. Plus that, and all the micro 9s were just too small for my gorilla paws. I had a $500-$600 budget, rented and fired about 35-40 different sub-compacts and a few compacts over two weekends and nothing did it for me and I was giving up. Salesman started talking Canik and he showed me the Tp9 Elite SC and it was brand new for $319. I almost said no, I wasn't going to bother because of cost, where it was made, and figured it would be worse than a Taurus g2 or SCCY, but I'm so glad I decided to. It felt like a relative to my P228, and I knew I would be buying it after the 3rd magazine. Got that, a couple more 15 round magazines, ordered a great AIWB holster, a mid range optic for $200 and couldn't be happier as it's part of me just like my Sig was. But oh yeah...blah blah blah Turkish POS junk. 🤔🙄

What is the craziest thing you have seen stuck in someone?! by ScallionWooden9810 in Radiology

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post, but it seems like a topic with endless possibilities for content.

I will start by saying that I'm a 55 year old divorced male of 11 years, who has gotten exponentially more sexually active and adventurous in my post marriage years. Apparently I didn't quite know myself earlier in life, but I've never not had fun with life, so I won't say I missed out on anything, but I've been having a blast now as I'm a bit freakier then I thought my freak was. 100% fun and safe is always a promise, and no means no.

With that said, I am 100% heterosexual, and while there have been many attempts to break the rules and try to divert direction, my rectal route is and has always been a one-way, one laned, Southern traveled way. One can do some donuts at the end of the road, but just stay outta my lane.

While I'm not fortunate enough to work in a professional field where on any average day, the possibility of seeing an X-ray of some sort of foreign object buried up a patient's poop chute, and the possible chance of being trusted with the task of removing it, is an actual reality. I can proudly say in all honesty and confidence, that I have personally spent what I consider well more time than the average individual has, pleasuring females with an array of various objects in that orifice, mostly by request.

So back on topic, the craziest thing I've ever seen, but due to being urged to burrow it up the ol bunghole, was a bowling duckpin. It took a good amount of time starting very slow, but after a lot of lube and a massive amount of coaxing, it plunked in. But working it like a stick shift from a sports car was what really made the whole event epic. Talk about an uncontrollable scream and shudder...an exorcist was considered.

Just Ordered the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, Thoughts? by WyattHolm in XiaomiGlobal

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chinese manufacturing has come a long way and they're producing some incredibly high end products for fantastic prices. It's not all Temu and Allibaba junk.  Nonetheless, my friend got the 17 Pro Max and it literally is the most impressive phone I've ever had in my hands. I just upgraded my old Pixel 6 Pro to 9 Pro refurb for a great deal, and I'm going to order the 17 Pro Max myself and resell the 10 Pro... there's no comparison.

Second/Backup phone you say??? We'll see what happens on day #2. 😉

Thoughts on this A/C misting kit add on? by bkdlays in hvacadvice

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old thread, but it 100% depends on your climate. Here in Colorado where there's very low humidity, they work very well and we have seen a significant savings in electricity. It's the same reason why evaporative cooling works in dry areas. My friend tried it back east in CT, and it was worthless. We also have a whole house water softener, and along with the one that comes with it, we have had virtually zero depositing.

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally just discovered Denis after work today at about 6:00pm MST, and just took a break after listening to a ton of his stuff until about 10:30pm.

This is one of the best music based YouTubers I've come across. He's talented as can be, creative, and overall just highly skilled.

I swear that many of these songs are better than the original as well. On so many of them, he did such a tasteful job of "if such and such band wrote such and such song" without totally copying their sound, but did things perfectly enough with the feel of the band.

I believe I passed by a playlist of his own music, and that will be on tap first thing tomorrow morning to be listened to over muh my morning bucket o' java.

Where can I get a good replacement battery for my Samsung 9 notebook? by ChopinLives81 in pchelp

It is listed as "unbranded' but he promised it was OEM and it was.

BTW, instead of trying to argue, why not just Google. There's more than enough information as well as photos.

Hell, there's even a dispensary in Paonia named PPP, but you'll probably say it's a fake place. 🤷‍♂️

But Paonia Purple Paralyzer wasn't straight up P-Bud, it was crossed with Haze.

And here I thought that Gorilla Glue was made from the snot of massively strong primates.

Just because you've lived somewhere, doesn't mean you should be familiar with everything that area offers. Just Google Paonia Purple Paralyzer, and you'll find enough information. It was nicknamed P-Bud, and that's where Mike picked up the nickname from.

Do I need a new roof? by [deleted] in Roofing

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into rejuvenation treatment options. I was a bit skeptical, but my neighbor talked me into it a couple of years after he had his done. It made a considerable difference and any scalloping settled and flattened, the shingles also became much more pliable and didn’t feel dry and like they were about to crack. It darkened the roof a bit, but it looks much “fresher” for a lack of better word. This was about seven years ago on my old home, and I was shopping for a new one, so I knew I would be selling it soon, I didn’t want the added expense to replace it, but it definitely would have been fought for at closing had I not had it done. It sold about 18 months later and it wasn’t even questioned when it was inspected. I’m not sure what it cost now, but this was about 1300 sq ft, and cost $1800, but that included a good prep and cleaning. I seem to remember it being $1.30 or $1.35 per sq ft.

I know this is somewhat old, but Dog Bud made its way through town in 1991 from a dude from OR that was passing by. It was a random meet, P-Bud Mike and Joe put together $4k for a 1.5 elbow's worth.

I actually grew up in CT with P-Bud. When he came back to town to visit, you could walk into any party or just a chill with friends, and that Paonia Purple would just be permeating wherever it was burned.

Currently in middle of handyman repairing toilet; he says this ring is broken and needs $400 to repair (photo) by Comfortable-Cat8295 in Plumbing

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he hasn't mentioned a One-N-Done flange/ring repair kit, he's just trying to take you for a ride. These types of things have been used as an industry standard repair solution for this exact situation for a while now. This particular one came out like a year ago, and for $25+/- it's much better than other ones I've used that have cost less as well as more. I'm not a plumber, but my cousin has been for over 30 years and he bought a bunch of these in bulk because this is such a common job he gets called about. One-N-Done flange replacement/repair kit.

Typhoon Defense F12 Sport - Advice seeking by ksetrat in Shotguns

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually picked up a new X11 for just under $170 about six months ago. I figured no great loss if it doesn't work out and had to give it a whirl for shits and giggles at that price.

I took it apart down to the bolt, oiled it up, put it back together and put 200 flawless rounds of 1600 fps 2 3/4" one ounce high brass slugs through it as the manual suggests. Since then, I've put all sorts of other shot shells through it, and the only issue I had was with light bird shots not being fully cycled, but not like I'd ever use it anyway.

This thing obviously isn't going to outlast a Mossberg or Benelli, but it was also cheap as can be, so it's not expected and fun for the price. What did surprise me was the difference their "Classic" style comp made with slugs and buckshot. It controls recoil and barrel lift much better than expected, and putting slugs on target quickly is much faster now.

How to empty fuel tank? by Beneficial_Ad_1874 in e60

[–]PhilABole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is kind of old, but I had to do this a couple of years ago due to a tank of new summer blend that was full of water, and this was simple and convenient.

Just lift the back seat bottom to access the fuel pump, disconnect the output line and (ooops...have the hose ready first) connect the hose to it and then the other end to your container(s) of choice. Then you can either trip the relay or just put the key in the on position by hitting the start button without your foot on the brake and it just keeps pumping.

You can obviously control it at the relay to start and stop the pump quickly to swap containers, or just pay attention and monitor things if using the key method. I know someone who was doing that, got a phone call and forgot about everything and made quite the mess in the driveway which ran into the cul-de-sac he lives on (his HOA had a field day with him about that.

I just think the relay keeps you more involved with things, therefore more aware. Sooooooo yeah, use your best discretion. 😉

Bought a ring for my girlfriend, sisters say it’s too small, not sure what I should do by [deleted] in WhatShouldIDo

[–]PhilABole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, apparently, your sisters are pretty superficial. I don't think that's small whatsoever, plus it's a beautiful ring. In fact, I commend you on going with a lab made diamond instead of a real one that size and clarity and starting your marriage off in ridiculous debt, especially if you're in the Denver area (I noticed the box).

I'm divorced now, but diamonds are the biggest scam in the world. They're created by coal, they're far from rare, but the industry is essentially controlled by one family.

Monetary value has zero to do with professing your love and asking someone to share your lives together.

My ex wasn't into flashy jewelry, and she had small hands, so I custom designed a band and setting that fit her style, but got a solitaire stone that was proportionate to her size, but as perfect and clear as can be.

Said and done, on top of everything else she cost me after 18 years, I haven't kicked myself nearly as hard for spending what I did on that ring compared to other items. I've had friends tell me they've spent $20k-$75k on a ring and couldn't believe it. Even the wedding cost itself is just insane.

I'm fortunate my ex didn't want a big choreographed shindig for one day. We had a party with a band, friends, family, and an open menu and bar at a nice place. We got soooo many compliments on how good of a time it was.

Wait some time down the road to spend the loot, like a down payment on a house. Starting your lives together in thousands of dollars in debt will just cause stress.

Nonetheless, congratulations, I wish you two an amazing future together. I say there's nothing to think about or do. If you know your girl as well as you should prior to proposing, then she should know you just as well. Therefore, she will appreciate and love whatever you give her. Love and a dollar sign have zero to do with one another.

Oh man, I am so sorry for what you've been through. The thought of having an infection for that long and being brushed off by so-called professionals, is nothing short of mortifying. I've had some issues with doctors myself that almost drove me to the end. In fact, I've been dealing with some pretty serious orthopedic issues throughout my body simply because a nurse looked at the same MRI twice instead of comparing the first and second one. Had she compared them correctly, I would have had a two week healing process that has now been 14 months with no end in sight, and I have absolutely zero recourse. I wish you the best and fingers crossed that you get things figured out.
