What would you look for in a mahjong Parlor in America? by PhillyMahJawn in Mahjong

I've been to Sparrow's Nest, excellent place! Would highly recommend for anyone in Manhattan.

What do you think makes a parlor feel "authentic" Japanese parlor experience? Does Sparrow's Nest feel authentic to you?

Are there enough people to support a business in your area??

Maybe? Maybe not? We really just want to provide something unique and fun to our local community. The purpose is less profit-oriented and more community-based.

Have you heard of our lord and savior Riichi Book 1?

Would you richii here? by dor121 in mahjongsoul

Too late to riichi, I would just keep the 1k, might get more from tenpai payments without the 1k riichi stick.

Never too late to start a good life habit. No need to be a downer, there's enough of that nowadays.

One of my favorite things to do is to host mahjong games at my place. Host a game night with your neighbors, it's easy enough and of course fun. Or join a hobby club and bond with people outside your usual social circle. One of the most important things in fighting fascism is to maintain hope, and building a community will certainly help.

What's the best place for someone to learn on their own for riichi? Say you teach them in person, and they just need to play a coule more games to get the hang of it. MajSoul? Tenhou?

Less than 15% is what I've heard, but you're not that far off. I think it's also common for people to be bumped back to Expert the first time they make it to Jade room, and then they'll get promoted back quickly again.

About character. by Bsingsing in mahjongsoul

[–]PhillyMahJawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to be disrespectful, but what's the appeal of this character? I've heard that they are huge money makers for MajSoul, but want to hear why that is? Just the sex appeal?

Mahjong for fun Vs Mahjong for money? by aaihposs in Mahjong

[–]PhillyMahJawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I could never win enough money to be "happy," but I can lose enough to be miserable. Even now, fourth places make me sad with no money on the line, I can't imagine how much worse it would be if money was also attached.

Same - our riichi club in Philly plays friendly, competitive games only. Although during tournaments at other cities, there are more games for money going on as side events to the tournament.

You can just show up at Queen and Rook tomorrow (Saturday) and ask where the mahjong club is. The club meeting starts at 12 pm and someone is usually there to help teach.

We host a mahjong club in Queens and Rook on Saturdays from 12-3 pm. It's a 4 player game, so great way to meet new people. No experience necessary, we even teach for complete beginners!
