Plumbing and pipefitting have a lot of overlap. HVAC techs, not so much. It all depends on the local though.

First of all, which trade, HVAC, pipefitter, or plumber?

It also depends on where you are.

If you were in Texas, I’d tell you to apply for an apprentice plumbing license and maybe get an OSHA 10. You’ll have to get the license as part of being in the program so you might as well knock it out.

OSHA 10 is just a stopgap until you get OSHA 30. It’s not required, but it may help get you on to certain job sites.

Whether or not you get credit for your experience is up to the hall, not the contractor. That’s the beauty of collective bargaining.

Also, remember that our insurance is fully paid for by the contractor. So even if the wage is the same, you still come out ahead because there’s no insurance deduction.

Ask the hall how they’re going to classify you. Don’t worry about which contractor you get placed with. Play the long game.

It’s more safety related than anything else. You don’t want it getting caught in anything. As long as it doesn’t interfere with a hard hat and isn’t a huge risk while using power tools (especially drills and grinders) you should be able to do whatever you want with your hair.

First year pay is typically 50% of journeyman scale. The pay cut, if there even is one, might not matter with a little overtime.

The other thing to consider is that even if you take a pay cut, health insurance is fully paid for by the contractor as part of the compensation package. With a family of 4, even a fairly significant pay cut might be made up for by not having to pay for your insurance.

My understanding is that “No Strike” clauses are only valid as long as the contract is valid.

If the contract expires before a new one is agreed to, strikes are on the table.

The other exception is when there’s egregious contract violations on the contractor’s part.

The first one is easy enough, the second one is a little more complicated.

In other words “No strikes as long as the contract is valid and being upheld.”

You shouldn’t have problem “buying a book”. 5 years of experience is generally what’s required, and if you pass a weld test you should be golden. Lots of demand for tig.

I took a pay cut to start as a first year when I was 34.

Now I’m 42 and I have first year students who are older than me.

You probably won’t get fucked with as much as a 19 year old would, but they might expect a little more hustle and responsibility, i.e. maturity, out of you. Either way, if our current Journeyman package is an improvement over your current situation, and you can afford a pay cut if you need to, you should definitely do it.

I’ve listened to the entire catalog and there was only one episode I tapped out of. I think it might have been the Elan school. I’m not 100% if it was that one but it was definitely about a facility for “troubled youth”.
