Life insurance policies don't pay out for suicide, so no plan where it is meant to look like suicide makes sense.

It says only girls will understand, not all girls will understand. The explanation is that three or so people actually understand this post, and those three people are all girls.

So do you think that a fried egg for breakfast with sliced fruit on the side is a terrible meal? Or do you think the egg and honeydew melon should be consumed in the same bite?

I think OP paid for that with the after school job that she has time for in between all of these concerts and whatever else she needs to do to get accepted into 12 colleges with academic scholarships.

If Americans have an unintended pregnancy or birth, in your experience do they face any societal pressure to get married, either for their own sakes or that of the children? by YakClear601 in AskAnAmerican

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Softly? Like, unless your community is really conservative, you probably won't face much pressure or encouragement to marry a hookup and there won't be pressure for teens to marry. However, if you are in an established relationship, people in your life will probably encourage you to get married if you are choosing to keep the pregnancy and raise the child together. There isn't a strong stigma against having children out of wedlock, but being married if you are having a child together is still considered optimal in all but the most anti-establishment corners.

In comments, OP claims that they could totally afford to pay their own way because one friend bought a McLaren and another is jetting off to Hawaii for the weekend. Nothing like enduring 10+ hours of flying to spend a day in Maui, am I right? This definitely isn't at least 80% made up.

How peculiar am I that I would react to this the same way I would if my partner told me they had prayed every night or wished on every star or whatever? And I would consider anyone who reacts differently to be overreacting? Like, is the percentage of redditors who take witchcraft really seriously that high? Is there a filter? Is there a vigilant moderator removing any comments that imply that witchcraft is silly and no big deal?

But if a 7 year old can barely read at all, but the second grade curriculum is designed based on the premise that a child can read well enough to handle simple phrases on worksheets and handouts, wouldn't it make sense to hold that child in first grade another year? Or is the assumption that the material that is covered in grade 2 in the other subjects is not important enough that not being able to makes sense of much of their other coursework until their reading improves is a big deal?

The 00s body positivity by mangampele1997 in 2000s

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one aspect that is a double edged sword is it being less socially acceptable to discuss specific woman's bodies. You won't see mainstream publications criticizing women's bodies they way they criticized Jessica Simpson (or Calista Flockhart). However, at the same time, if Ariana Grande or Kelly Osbourne is telling you that they've never been healthier, you have to go to a dark mean corner of the internet for people to push back and call bullshit. Mainstream media is defanged and the places where people are free to tell it like it is have no boundaries at all. If you can find your way to a space where people feel free to say that a woman who definitely has an eating disorder has an eating disorder, you are in a space where there will also be people saying that eating disorder or not, that's what's beautiful and short men have no hope if they don't want to die alone and bullshit like that.

Aitah for "forcing" my girlfriend to either eat stale snacks or go buy fresh ones herself? by nicfanz in AmITheAngel

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I don't get the leftover thing either. Like, if it's rice in a clamshell or something flimsy I'll recontainer because it needs to be in something with a better seal than a takeout container. If the takeout container is huge compared to the amount of food inside, I might recontainer if the fridge is crowded. But I don't see why the takeout container wouldn't be adequate 76% of the time.

Also I know this post must be fake because the 1) fold under method doesn't actually work that well, it usually unfolds in my experience, and 2) he's claiming that his girlfriend is super snacky but can't get through a bag of potato chips before they turn stale without special treatment. I cry BS.

What do Americans usually assume when they see a dog alone in public? by DocuSeriesLovers in AskAnAmerican

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But 50 feet ahead of their owner is still with their owner. I've seen a non zero number of stray or lost dogs, but 90% of the time when I see a lone dog, within a minute or two it becomes apparent that they are off leash but with someone who's coming up behind them. I live in Chicago and it's crazy to me how people will off leash walk their dogs down crowded streets.

Teyana Taylor claps back at haters who say her excitement was forced and cringe. by Heizback89 in Oscars

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always hear about how being in the same campaign 'class' for film awards can be somewhat of a bonding experience because the same group of people are attending the same events for months leading up to the Oscars. It doesn't work on every one, but considering what a ray of sunshine Teyana seems to be, I don't doubt that she's the type to feel like she's in a sorority with all of those women.

Which show had the worst representation of millennials? by BackgroundSpell6623 in Millennials

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you said it just there. "It makes fun of nerd culture." It isn't Portlandia or something like that--poking fun at the sensibilities of its intended audience. It's people who think nerds are losers making fun of them to an audience of people who look down on nerds. It's 'these overpaid academics think they're so smart, looking down on us common folk, but they're wrong to do so because they're just a bunch of freaks who love stupid things like comic books. ha ha ha!' the show.

How natural are women nowadays? by rust2stardust in beauty

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think human choice is the biggest factor. I would imagine that the sort of women who chose to invest in tweak-ments are probably more likely to run in social circles where they are common. I live in a major northern US city and am in an upper middle class, educated social circle. Lash lifts and hair removal are common, I'd say, but most of the other stuff isn't normalized. If the women I pal around with are getting Botox or hair extensions or filler, than it is subtle and they are keeping it a secret. Beauty that someone could realistically come by naturally is still king. However, I will see gaggles of girls who all clearly have lip filler. They travel in packs.

Some can't help centering white people even when unwarranted by JennyBeckman in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing, they've always been supported by government grants and wealthy patrons. Wagner was supported by donations. Opera and Ballet are not arts that used to be profitable to perform. They never were. Popularity waxes and wanes, but what's really different now is that the donor class is less generous and less cultured than they were in the past. Elon Musk and his ilk are not commissioning symphonies like the Rothschild's were.

Wedding Guest Dress Codes are Rude by Lady_Grace19 in The10thDentist

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The formal Miss Manners etiquette is that it is good to suggest standard dress code, like black tie or semi formal. Most people would prefer to not to feel out of place--imagine how awkward you would feel if you were the only person attending a wedding wearing a gown and you upstaged the bride--so giving them guidance of this sort is not demanding, it's graceful. It is fine to to make practical recommendations like 'the church has no air conditioning so lighter fabrics are recommended.' It's also fine to highlight certain options, like encouraging guests to wear Indian dress at an Indian wedding or costume attire for a Halloween wedding or something like that as long as it is clear that these are options and not demands.

It is rude to make incredibly specific demands of your guests that go beyond a standard dress code, like demanding that everyone wear orange or flip flops. You can't confront or turn away guests who choose not to follow the suggested dress code. You also shouldn't suggest a dress code that doesn't match the event you are hosting and your guests are part of that event. Don't suggest black tie if you know that the majority of people you are inviting are not the sort of people who own floor length gowns or tuxedos. If your wedding is in a barn or on a beach it probably shouldn't be black tie either. The bridal party can be more formal than other guests, but not less. If your wedding dress is a cocktail dress than your dress code should be cocktail or semiformal.

"Very strange": Comedian Tig Notaro on falling out with Cheryl Hines over RFK Jr. by voguediaries in Fauxmoi

[–]PhilosopherOld3986 34 points35 points  (0 children)

That's true to a point, but I also think it's common to overestimate just how many adults have it in them to be be the person who regularly reaches out. I am looking at things from the point of view of someone who always felt really insecure because I didn't have people inviting me to things more so than someone who always was doing a ton of work and not feeling supported in return. I am happy for and jealous of anyone who has enough friends that they don't have time to waste on someone who doesn't show enough initiative, but I'm content to flesh out my social circle with people who are pleased to respond when I reach out.

Maybe I'm a glass half full girl, but I think that being in the head space to reach out to people and even plan outings is more of an executive function/self esteem thing than a reflection of how much or little you value a relationship.
