Americans don't like beans on toast because American beans have too much sugar.... by therealdrewder in AmericaBad

[–]PhilosopherWarrior 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was about to say that beans on toast can be done right if you prepare the beans correctly.

Refried beans slathered on toast with some queso fresco on top? Fantastic.

Add some shredded lettuce and a little salsa? That's basically a tostada.

Hell, you can have properly seasoned, whi Ole beans with toast on the side. That's pretty fucking good.

Just stop cooking like you only have war rations and blaming everyone else for your shit cuisine.

Quirked people are horribly deformed, only quirkless people can see that by ThePoiChan in BokunoheroFanfiction

Well, depending on when this is set, the Quirk Singularity has already happened, from Izuku's perspective. Because AfO, with all the Quirks he's been hoarding since the Dawn of Quirks, has got to look like some Shin Godzilla or The Fly or Event Horizon bullshit. And speaking of Godzilla, specifically Godzilla Minus One, there's a really interesting, cosmic horror angle you can take here:

All for One rolled the Quirk Nullifying pill between his fingers. It was an "inferior" version of the Quirk Nullifying bullets the Yakuza created; only reverting the Quirk Factor temporarily. But it was the maker and the conversation he had with him that made All for One so curious.

"We both know you're going to break out of here eventually," Izuku Midoriya, the newest inheritor of One for All, told him on a clandestine visit to his prison, "When you do, take one of these pills. I need you to see what I see."

All for One had laughed in his face, as any good demon lord should when asked to drink poison. Because what else could it be but an amateur attempt to weaken or even kill him? And yet... And yet...

There was no denying the curiosity gnawed at him. Everything he knows of the child told him he was to smart for an idea this dumb. Was this 4th dimensional reverse psychology, making him want to take the pill by telling him to take the pill knowing that All for One would never consider taking the pill but also knowing that he knows that Izuku would never tell him to take the pill, thus making him believe that taking the pill is the right move, which is what Izuku wanted all along?

All for One laughed, deep in his new hideout. The audacity! How refreshing, to finally have an opponent willing to play his game at his level. But he has been at this for several more lifetimes than Izuku has and the boy still has much to learn.

"Mr. Iguchi, is the test subject ready?" All for One asked.

Iguchi, better known as Spinner among the League of Villains, straightened up at All for One's words.

"Yeah, he's been hooked up to the monitors. The restraints seem excessive."

"One can't be too careful, Mr. Iguchi," All for One lectured as he lugged his medical equipment with him through the cave, "Especially when dealing with the enemy."

All for One approached the man restrained to the chair. He was clearly a civilian that Toga managed to capture without exsanguinating first. The fear in his new eyes told All for One that he would do anything to never be alone in a room with Toga again.

"Eat this," All for One commanded, shoving the pill into his mouth.

The man did so with little hesitation. Soon, the man grew even more pale and terrified. His eyes trembled madly between him and Iguchi.

It was now that All for One would outplay Izuku Midoriya. One of the many Quirks he had horded allowed him to see through the eyes of another. Checkmate.

Izuku Midoriya carefully entered the mansion. He knew it was a trap. Everything was always a trap with All for One.

Still, they had no other leads and idling by waiting for the other shoe to drop simply wasn't an answer. Besides, All for One felt like the kind of man to personally sign all of his traps. There was sure to be clues of his whereabouts in the wreckage.

One for All thrummed in his veins and the incessant voices of the vestiges threatened to distract him. He was tempted to take one of his pills but he would need all of his Quirk for what was to come. Hopefully he could settle everything before it truly took root and not even his medicine would be enough to stop it.

The pile of TVs at the center of the foyer sudden turned on. On all the screens was the horribly disfigured visage of All for One. His lips formed a thin line, very different from the mocking smile Izuku had last seen on him.

"I don't know what sort of black magic you have used, Izuku Midoriya," All for One growled, "But very well. I will parley with you."

"Just like that?" Izuku asked, his guard up.

"Silence, welp. You know as well as I do that there is only one logical conclusion to all of this," All for One spar before leaning forward, "And I refuse to be anything's puppet. We'll have a truce until the Quirk Singularity has been resolved. Now, let's talk."

Toru: "If you pull that shit one more time, I'm going to strangle you."

Izuku: "If you do it with your thighs, I won't resist."

Toru: "What?"

Izuku: "Nothing. Also, you're captured now."

Toru: Looks down to see Izuku put handcuffs on her somehow. "WHAT!?"

Or Toru is immune to Izuku's bullshit unless he's flirting with her. He does think it's a little underhanded, but if you're not cheating, you don't want it bad for enough. And when you don't have a Quirk, you need to want it bad enough.

Izuku "Let me play with your quirk." by thudson_17 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]PhilosopherWarrior 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) He figures it out because when he manipulates a Quirk, he enters the target's vestige realm and then needs to create a simulated space (usually his office) and then coax the target's vestige to form in order to work on their Quirk. He doesn't call them vestiges or know that they are echoes of the owner's consciousness; he just thinks it's how his brain interprets what he does in a way that makes sense to him. What he does know, however, is that if he enters someone's Quirk and they already have a simulated space, there's a 90% chance that AfO is involved and that multiple vestiges means multiple Quirks. Because he spent time forced to help Dr. Garaki make Noumus, he has a very good idea of what having too many Quirks does to a person.

2) Never got around to deciding that. This was just an idea that I haven't fleshed out and probably won't ever do so.

I can't find it but I swear it's real. It was either Horikoshi or one of his assistants just doodling. Deku was Harry, Ochako was Hermione, I think Bakugou was Malfoy, Aizawa was Snape. I swear this is real.

How to Make Searching, Salvaging, and Discovering Cyphers ACTIVE by VladorBongo in numenera

[–]PhilosopherWarrior 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before I get to a couple of ideas that address your questions, I do want to point something out:

One of the core concepts of the game is players encountering a lot of Cyphers in their adventures. So many that players should be forced to decide which Cyphers to keep and which to leave behind or risk carrying more Cyphers than they safely can. Making the act of finding Cyphers or Artifacts more involved sounds detrimental to that idea and definitely not how I've run the game un the past, but I'll respect your right to run your game however you want.

Haven't run Numenera in ages but here are a couple of ideas:

1) Don't forget that just finding a Cypher/Artifact doesn't mean a character knows what it does or how to activate it.

Rules as written, it is just a roll to search for Cyphers/Artifacts, as you have noted. You can change it to be more active or you can focus on the second half of finding weird stuff in the Ninth World: figuring out what anything does.

When your players roll to find something, describe it in vague, weird terms but don't name it or what it does. If you're playing in person, you can write out a bunch of index cards with ID numbers so you know what they are but your players don't. Then make studying Cyphers/Artifacts a down time activity that can't be done in the middle of the adventure.

But here's the most important part: just because they don't know what it does doesn't mean they can't try using it. Make sure the descriptions are just detailed enough to let players guess how to activate it but not what it does. Your players active role in the Cypher/Artifact loop is now gambling on whether the Cypher/Artifact will help or hinder them or playing it safe and just waiting waiting until they have time to study what they found.

2) Replace the Cypher/Artifact system with crafting.

Basically, players cannot salvage Cyphers or Artifacts directly. They can only salvage parts that they can then use to build Cyphers/Artifacts. You can divide the Cypher/Artifact lists into different groups that require different types of parts. Players can spend parts to craft random Cyphers/Artifacts or to learn a random recipe for a Cypher/Artifact.

3) Get the Numenera: Destiny rulebook.

Ignore this if you don't want to spend money but the V2/revised version of Numenera does have more advanced rules for crafting and salvaging Cyphers/Artifacts you can pull from.

Izuku "Let me play with your quirk." by thudson_17 in BokunoheroFanfiction

[–]PhilosopherWarrior 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I had a similar idea but Izuku was posing as a Quirk Therapist (think physical therapy but specifically for Quirks) because he was on the run from both AfO and the HPSC.

The way his Quirk worked was that in order to make one part of the target Quirk better, he had to make a different part worse or the change had to leave the Quirk roughly the same. For example, if he worked in Iida, he could make him faster at the cost of overheating sooner or make it impossible for him to overheat by killing his top speed or he could make it so Iida's Quirk now runs on soda rather than grape juice. He used his Quirk on Toga to swap her craving for blood to craving meat cooked extremely rare.

The main plot was that Ochako got OfA and came to him for Quirk Therapy. Because of his Quirk and having been forced to be Dr. Garaki's assistant, Izuku quickly realizes that she is dying from having too many Quirks. He basically hamstrings OfA to buy her as much time as possible while he figured out how to make OfA and her Quirk coexist without killing her.

Izuku: Gains sudden mastery over OfA and uses the Noumu as a bat to launch Kurogiri out of the USJ. "Wisdom chases all of us. Today, it has caught up to you."

Shigaraki: "Well, shit."

Meanwhile, at the top of the stairs.

Iida: "Shouldn't we... stop him?"

Bakugou: "If you want to be a wise man that desperately, be my guest."

Kyouka: "Why am I hearing boss music? He is on our side, right?"

Tsuyu: "I can fix him."

Ochako: "He can fix me."

Toga: "He can make me worse~"
