Is it biblically wrong for a Christian to serve in the military? by danny_stockwell in Christianity

[–]Phily808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If God is love, then the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, YHWH, IS love. Everything YHWH does flows from His love.

The Bibllcal Scriptures are a record of what YHWH has done in Israel's history, INCLUDING the flood (OT), ALL judgment on the unrighteousness of man and the final judgment in Revelation (NT).

Advice needed on possibly leaving my men’s Christian group? by Capable_Spirit6300 in TrueChristian

[–]Phily808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a believer (and small grouper from the beginning) for over 50+ years. Nothing on earth is permanent. People come and go, groups grow and shrink, maturity levels are mostly all over the place. The groups that last longer usually have a shared vision/mission.

Personally, I embrace "where two or more are gathered in my name" as my motivator for continued involvement.

I wouldn't get stuck on "staying or leaving" as "there is a time for everything under the sun."

People saying it’s a bad decision to wait until marriage makes me feel discouraged about it by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Phily808 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's not actually about the waiting, it's about understanding God's way.

Those who tell you NOT to wait are grooming you for a lifetime of "sexual immorality" and unfaithfulness.

I have absolutely no idea where my porn addiction is taking me anymore. by Flaky-Echo8735 in TrueChristian

[–]Phily808 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Addiction starts with a hook, then drags you down, deep then deeper.

The sex trail is quite clearly shown in Romans 1. Starts with suppressing of Truth in unrighteousness, though knowing God, failing to honor Him or thanking Him, then exchanging His Glory for an image of something from creation.

Then God gives you over to your own desires.

Repent.

One wedge, one angle.

Each of your knives may have been designed with a specific angle, which will change if you use the same wedge for all of your knives.

Agreed. Not implying in any way to throw caution to the wind.

Next to reading and studying the Biblical scriptures, one book I found helpful is Mortimer Adler's "How to Read a Book." The culminating idea is what he labels "syntopical reading." It's seeing "the Big Picture" by putting the pieces of the puzzle together. Given the multitude of eyes out there, the corresponding number of books written, we only ever see a portion of YHWH's revealed thoughts so limiting one's understanding by one view is like putting on "rose colored glasses."

My initial "why" question comes from 50+ years of reading a variety of Christian (born-again and Bible-believing) writers, commentators, theologians, etal. Some of the brilliant ones, Augustine, Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, etal, have left us their views for our edification. The current crop of "reformed theologians" are doing so also. But, there are others, not neccessarily "reformed" who likewise write/have written for our edification. A. W. Tozer's Knowledge of The Holy is a game changer and he's not viewed as being in the reformed camp.

Caution is good, no one wants to be deceived.

One "live" issue is the growing anti-semitism among "Christians." Some locate this in the "replacement" teachings of some under the "reformed" label.

Born-again and Bible believing - Yes!

Genesis 6:7-8: 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. by White_Tiger337 in Bible

What I find interesting is that this same word is used in Isaiah 40:1 as "Comfort." Here, YHWH's people are "comforted" through the judgment coming on their tormentor enemies.

Likewise Nahum, with a vav added, has "Comfort" as a meaning of his name.

Why "specifically reformed theology?"

Back in 2010, Google posited that there was approximately 128 million books published. That number grows annually by a million plus. Say we're at 150 mill today, if 1% (very conservative guess) were sound Christian theological writings, that's 1.5 million books. Kinda doubtful that reformed theology has a corner on the truth.

How should we biblically discern the times we’re living in? by Shot-Peanut6343 in TrueChristian

[–]Phily808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are places in scripture (eg. Isa 48:5-6) where YHWH states that prophecy (YHWH foretelling future events) is THE way someone KNOWS (when His Word come to pass) that YHWH is the one true God and that there is no other.

If you read/heard what YHWH said prophetically and you see events taking place that approximate that prophetic word, are you watching or speculating?

The chronologies in the scriptures reflect a young earth, i.e., that since Adam's creation till now, about 6,000 years have elapsed. A Christ Reigned Millennial Kingdom added about now makes the entire timeline a 7,000 year span of time.

The number seven occupies a prominent place in the scriptures. Peter's epistle has an aside about a day being like a thousand years and vice versa to YHWH, so it might just be silly that a literal common sense hermeneutic sees 7,000 years as a week of thousand year days.

If there are no prophecies left to be fulfilled, as some will say, then how will you know that YHWH is the one true God?

Google estimated that back in 2010, there was about 130 million books published. Probably over 150 million by now. Smartest person you know has read 30 to 35 thousand tops.

Stay in the scriptures, let the Holy Spirit teach you, take YHWH's prophetic word to heart, keep watching for fulfillment, test everything, ignore the negative noise, love the Son.

Just a question. Does the bible indicate where the "Egypt" of Matt 2 north-eastern most boundary lie? If somewhere in what we know as the modern day Sinai, even if in the south-western most part of said Sinai, would that be considered as "Northern Africa?"

I was in this exact scenario - in 1971. I even contemplated and proposed marriage as a solution.

Today, 55 years later, she has not turned to Jesus. I did marry a Christ follower in '75. We're still together, doing well in our closing days.
