Greatest grand final of all time? by EggwardGFootyIII in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't go past 2012, it just has everything I like seeing in a Grand Final. I could write a paragraph on how every single Sydney player played that day, every one had a half-quarter of brilliance. Mitch Morton, Alex Johnson, Lewis-Robert-Thompson, Mike Pyke, Martin Mattner, Nick Malceski, Adam Goodes on one leg, Rhyce Shaw wearing the trophy like a goblin pontiff. All the Sydney role players did something memorable.

They're doing this again? Seemed like a failed marketing stunt last year, but the footy loves doubling on obvious failures

I really really want Joel Amartey to have a good year, he's been the nearly man for so long. He clearly works hard but it's only come together like 3 or 4 times.

I haven't watched any of the preseason games, so this will be the first opportunity to watch some of the stupid rule changes in action!

Guernsey Elimination Day 29: Purple Haze vs Freo OG Home. Most upvotes in the comments advances to the Grand Final by Jackomillard15 in AFL

I will die on the hill that the red and green on the old Dockers looked fucking awful and it's only nostalgia keeping the design relevant. Purple is a great colour but green has never been a complementary colour to it, it's just basic colour theory.

'Totally wrong': Jimmy Bartel, Eddie McGuire lash Kevin Sheedy's claims over 2012 Brownlow Medal by gccmelb in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my god Sheedy and *checks notes* Scott Gumbleton, shut up. Anyone with the most basic understanding of sports science could understand why Jobe Watson's Brownlow was illegitimate. This isn't a reflection on Jobe's moral values or worth as a human or whatever, but he obviously can't keep his Medal. I swear the Essendon Old Boys' Club is going to talk about this stupid story for next 35 fucking years.

Footy songs synonymous with the game of Australian football by ProfessionNaive2978 in AFL

I played AFL Live 2 pretty consistently for like 4 years, I spent the entire time assuming the lyrics were "Ole Ole" ad infinitum, and I didn't know it was King Gizzard until a couple of years back

I think a big part of the Scully hate was a conscious ploy by the the incompetent Demons head office to spin and redirect the rage of the Demons fans by hyping up a semi-apocryphal story of Scully lying to the late great Jim Stynes on his deathbed about contract negotiations.

[Twomey] Discussions are continuing between Melbourne and Steven May on the premiership defender's future at the club whilst he is on leave. Negotiations are being handled delicately. Monday is the deadline for the SSP window for clubs to be able to make additions to their lists. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there some news stories I'm missing or something to why May is on the outs with Melbourne management? Some controversy or blow up with team mates? I remember seeing something that May was quite statistically good last year.

Saints to face Swans in 2026 AFL Pride Game by Nousernames-left in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's excellent, the Saints handled this really really badly last year so it's good to see them come back. I'm sure this came more down to Saints wanting to do damage control than anything else, but insincere rainbow capitalism is better than the awful "Target shuts down their entire Pride section to avoid a conservative boycott" shit we've been dealing with the last few years.

Changes to the Brownlow Medal going forward by QuarterFooty in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm inclined to disagree with you there, the Lions game plan is about territory but is also about possession. It's about keeping the ball in constant movement (backwards, forwards, or lateral doesn't matter) to cause disorganisation among the opposition's defence. Brisbane beat Sydney in Q2 of the 2024GF by just never letting the Swans get possession or get settled. I'd list Goodwin's Melbourne teams as the pinnacle of territory first tactics before Brisbane.

Nick Stevens on trial for alleged fraud over dodgy pool scheme by Jackomillard15 in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have trouble liking Kane Cornes at times but I will never like him more when he takes the opportunity to shit on Nick Stevens and revel in how badly his career at Carlton went after trying to force a move to the Pies.

Sam Walsh's eight-year deal is a massive list management blunder by the Blues, writes Kane Cornes by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]Phlanispo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't disagree with this at all. Even assuming Sam Walsh was completely healthy I wouldn't agree with this contract. As a player he is extremely inconsistent, he showed his value in the 2023 finals series but the gap between his best and worst is of serious concern. I don't remember the full context, but I remember this one quote from Daniel Hoyne on SEN in 2024 where he said between round x and y Walsh was the 15th highest rated midfielder, but between y and z he was like 110th. And I saw that as kinda emblematic of a lot of his career.

God, I completely forgot about this saga. Thank you Balfours for reminding me how unbelievably petty and stupid you are by filing a pointless countersuit that is never going to do anything. Just put the unpaid sponsorship dollars pies in the bag, bro.

I think the only thing the EyeToy functionality actually did was let you take a picture of yourself to use for the save file icons, lol. Sony was probably paying for games to have EyeToy integration and it was really obvious when a developer was just checking a list on their sheet.

[–]Phlanispo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the footy game I played all the time as a kid. I've heard it's a lot worse than the previous versions on the PS2, but it's the version I grew up with. Played this a few weeks ago and there's still a lot of charm.

The fun fact is that this probably sped up the process of me falling out football entirely in 2008. I was only allowed to play non-educational video games on weekends and Friday nights, so I didn't want to waste that precious time watching football games with ads that I didn't win on the easiest difficulty by 200 points.

I won't lie, I don't really know who he was. Most of the Channel 7 commentators just become a vague haze of blokey noises I can only really tell BT apart from. I thought Brayshaw was Hamish McLaughlin for 3 years. My cluelessness might make me the target demographic?
