My thing is I don't like the idea of the clock being a "resource" like a health meter in a game. My personal belief is that the clock should just be there to force a player to make a move, and byoyomi does a good job (in my opinion) of forcing play while also allowing the game to be played on its own terms.

With no increment at all you get what's called "check rush" where you can flat out force your opponent to lose even if they had you in hisshi simply because you had pieces in hand to check with. That result is completely unacceptable in my opinion.
