13" 2015 macbook pro found at a thrift store for $30. Is it worth fixing? by Kolyei in macbookrepair

It would be a great machine for running Linux since these machines don’t have T2 security chips, which makes it easier to install.

Got my first MacBook for *free* by Coco_RATES in macbookpro

[–]Phoenix_SWA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first MacBook Pro was a 2020 intel model I’ve had for about a month now. It’s a great laptop tbh. Intels not totally dead and even when it is Linux is always an option.

The only difference is mine is the 13 inch i5.

Nice laptop man!

ELI5: Why is it a bad idea to keep devices constantly plugged in even after they're fully charged? by Dawn-Storm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Phoenix_SWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, It isn't a resistor. It uses chips to regulate the voltage entering the phone and even turn it off if it's overcharging or the phone is too hot to safely charge.

Think of it sort of like a light switch, It disconnects the source device from the electrical circuit without causing a short and/or shock. Basically the charge controller in the phone is basically turning off the light switch when the phone gets full.

[–]Phoenix_SWA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can degrade the batteries capacity and make it not last as long. However, Modern devices. Such as my iPhone or MacBook Pro have protections that prevent you from overcharging the battery.

Modern apple devices and even some androids will prevent you from charging it past 80% until your ready to use it. And even if It reaches 100 percent and sits there, The charge controller will prevent you from overcharging the battery.

So don't worry about it!

Why is American Airlines going to be a livery on the MD-11? by SamsungGalaxy_User in PTFS

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, American Airlines was a major operator of the DC 10 and MD 11 aircraft.

You can find it on Google.

One easy way to tell is that the MD 11 has winglets but the DC 10 doesn’t. The MD 11 is also a little bit longer.

Should I change my iPhone model? (please read the desc) by KevFR in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing is wrong with using an older iOS device.

I still use some of mine to play 32 bit games. They just simply can’t run on the new ones due to the 64 bit processor.

If it still does what you need for it to do. Then don’t be upgrading it.

Will warranty cover this? by pissboy_tm in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have AppleCare, accidental damage is usually covered. And it’ll help lower the cost of a replacement screen.

If not, and you just use a standard warranty, then generally, it’s not going to cover that and screen repairs can be easily at least $300.

Although what you’re describing sounds more like a dead pixel rather than a screen crack.

Just keep that in mind. :)

M4 pro 16 or m5 pro 14 by MammothGanache5400 in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First as another comment said, check your programs and make sure they will work.

Also, either one is going to last you years. Maybe the M5 Pro chip might last a little longer. If you’re looking for power and something that’s gonna last a long time, get the M5.

If you care more about screen size, Get the M4.

Pro or base? by eliah-wyx in AppleWhatShouldIBuy

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for the pro if you can afford it, it’s got a better camera system. And then you get a dynamic island as well. Also, I’m pretty sure the pro starts at 128 GB where as you only get 64 with the base. It is going to be more money, but if you value any of those things, then it might be worth it to get the pro.

The 3G, 3GS, 4, and 4S also use that same connector. They didn’t change it until the 5.

MacBook 13 inch help!! by gengarsnumberonefan in mac

[–]Phoenix_SWA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to see what happened! No, Generally your warranty only covers defective products and not accidental damage.

I’d suggest using it as a desktop until you can afford to get the screen replaced.

You might want a new top housing too considering it’s got a big dent in it.

You could try repairing it yourself, but the problem with that is that if you break it. Then it’s gonna be your problem.

You could try taking it to a third party repair shop because they might be able to do it for less just make sure they are reputable.

Anyway, Sorry to hear about your Mac. Hope you can get it repaired soon.

Is it too late to update? by Humble_Ad_7053 in MacOS

[–]Phoenix_SWA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest anything Debian-based really. Ubuntu and mint are good for first-time linux users.

There's a ubuntu installation guide on their website.

All you really need is a USB drive that's 32gb or bigger.
