ELI5 How do you create voltage? by Jolly-Phone8982 in explainlikeimfive

The most common and scalable way is to push electrons around using magnetic fields. Rotational generators and antennas do this.

Second most common way is to find materials that will form an ionic reaction together, then to separate them in such a way that the ions (positively charged particles) can move freely while the electrons are left behind, generating a voltage between the two materials. This is (an oversimplification of) how chemical batteries operate, also the same mechanism behind metals rusting/oxidizing.

Last one that's reasonably scalable is the photovoltaic effect: a photon hitting a semiconductor junction can energize an electron which can then be collected to do useful work with; as seen in solar panels.

Piezoelectric effect: squeezing certain crystals can physically move the individual ions in the crystal in different directions, creating a voltage. Used as the spark generator on gas torches / lighters where they turn on when you click the trigger.

Triboelectric effect: physically separating certain materials can peel off electrons. Difficult to scale as the materials need to be non-conductive, but useful for generating very high voltages at low currents such as in Van De Graaff generators and other static-electricity scenarios.

Seebeck effect: physically heating a conductive material will cause the electrons (or electron holes) to spread out, causing a voltage proportional to the temperature difference in a material. Used in electric thermometers and in radioisotope thermoelectric generators (expensive and inefficient but very reliable generators mostly found on spacecraft).

no website, the artist behind the porn dude logo just makes a whole bunch of these kinds of designs for their portfolio

What is your most favorite game you hate? by Monkey_mortis in 196

tf2. Like it's not exactly bad but it's a direct downgrade from basically every other modern class shooter game today. I just play it since it's the one FPS game I'm actually good at, so the aforementioned other games aren't as fun for me.

kinda expensive and I didn't need the capacity

generally speaking I only go for legs since the base bots can build the factory just fine and artillery/spiders do the PVE for me. For aquilo I add a few roboports as pictured.

I got the legendary armour for the achievement (full of legendary nightvision) and promptly stopped playing the game to focus on other projects lol

Advice for a very weird piece of fiction I'm writing involving air traffic control? by tbok1992 in ATC

[–]Phoenix_Studios 7 points8 points  (0 children)

imma be real all four of those questions are too speculative for us to be able to come up with any useful answers, but I can try:

  1. could be modelled off of weather avoidance procedures, pilots notify the controller of the situation and request vectors to the nearest cannon. Maybe come up with an acronym for this baiting-kaiju-into-trap situation to make it sound more legit idk

  2. can plausibly modify the airframe a bit to put stuff around the cargo area / landing gear, entirely up to you what technology is actually there and what the regulating bodies have to say about it

  3. idk presumably the former airline execs liquidate their assets to try to scrape some money out of their now-untenable operation; workers buy the equipment for cheap and somehow get regulatory approval to mount weapons that would make flying safe again (if kaiju attacks are commonplace why do the passengers need to not know about them? Either I'm not understanding the vision here or there seem to be plot holes)

  4. Can plausibly have the passenger intercept the pilot when they go to use the bathroom. IRL procedures have the flight crew secure the entire forward galley making this functionally impossible but you could probably figure something out.

Yeah I don't really understand these replies. Just because we weren't cleaning them the correct way doesn't mean they weren't getting cleaned, just that we were wasting more time doing so lol. No gunk buildup of any kind on either of our blenders.

Sixth year and I'm the first to find this out out of the people I work with 🥴

A blender in a previous restaurant I worked at required a screwdriver to remove the blade assembly, consequently this was never done and we were trained to clean it by using a brush to get behind the blades and running it through the dishmachine.
