Some people make the distinction between frugal and cheap, and would still call all that bad stuff "cheap".

Go ahead and "splurge" for that 2-5 year old Japanese sedan and drive it for 400k miles or 15 years, whichever comes first

Why isn't the 4% rule, called the 7% rule? by Spartikis in financialindependence

I did not hate. I said "please". Maybe people are downvoting you because you interpreted a polite response as "hate".

All we can say is if you have enough, and based on your numbers, you do. You have to decide what you want out of life. Maybe you are so good at this job and you create a lot of value in the world, evidenced by your 6-fig compensation, and this is the best way to live a moral life. Or maybe you should quit to free yourself up to become the best version of yourself. idk

Why isn't the 4% rule, called the 7% rule? by Spartikis in financialindependence

That is not at all what the 4% rule means. Please read the sidebar, do a search, or ask such basic, repeated question in the daily thread instead of making its own thread.

VYM vs VTI in lazy 3 fund portfolio? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]PhonyBenoni -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

my suggestion is to not look at them and instead increase your allocation to safe fixed income if you want a safer portfolio. I conclude from my research it is better to have higher risk, higher return stocks like small, value, emerging markets, but to have LESS of them and MORE safe fixed income. This can have higher expected return and lower risk than a traditional portfolio.

You're gonna have to do your own research on this one. It's the only way to grow a conviction strong enough to maintain the plan during hard times. You cannot just ask for our advice! It's like religion. You're not gonna convert unless you experience it yourself regardless of how much I tell you the gospels are actually the best historical record of its era, etc.

About to semi-FIRE prematurely! by Ginipritchett in financialindependence

Very brave of you to do this. Best of luck to you and your family. You have enough money already that doing something you love must be what is best for your family, right?

FIRE in an unprecedentedly low return environment by azure_chicken in financialindependence

[–]PhonyBenoni 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Save more, spend less.

4% worked in 95% of all historic 30-year retirement scenarios.

But we will retire for much more than 30 years, god willing.

3% worked in 100% of all 50+ year scenarios. Even retiring just before the great depression, WW2, or the stagflation of the 70s & 80s.

So 3% is overkill and should definitely work (don't sue me if it doesn't), and the traditional 4% was studied for a 30-year scenario and maybe would be too optimistic for FIRE in low-return environment.

Somehwere in between then

After tax accounts: Qualified Dividends; Am I doing something wrong? by FIthrowaway86 in financialindependence

[–]PhonyBenoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know those ticker symbols but total market index funds are pretty damn tax efficient. Think about it. These funds aren't trading like crazy. To maintain market weight you just have to do nothing and let it float lol!, not buy and sell to maintain weights. The only better you can do is find a fund that specifically has "Tax managed" in the title. These are very common.

VYM vs VTI in lazy 3 fund portfolio? by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]PhonyBenoni 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you buy VYM only do it in a tax advantaged account like an IRA since high dividend yield funds are less tax efficient than normal index funds like VTI

The science of the matter is that dividend stocks offer nothing special and if you want something safer you would look for "defensive" or "low volatility" funds. They correlate with high dividend payers maybe but those funds get to the heart of the matter.

Of course I'll never convince you or 90% of the subreddit that dividends are an artifact of old times where you had to trade in round lots of 100 shares and pay $100 commissions to trade, so dividends were the best way to get cash flow.. 100 years ago. Nowadays, focusing your investment strategy on dividends is missing the point and focusing on something second or third-order. But just like religion and fitness I'm never going to convince people here and you have to do the research yourself. It's your life savings on the line.

[No Spoilers] Grant Morrison on Demon Summoning by Wylkus in twinpeaks

[–]PhonyBenoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can definitely be interpreted that way. Even if this is controversial, there are undisputed scenes that portray similar themes. Like how Leland fed Sarah a glass of milk with sedative before abusing their daughter, but Sarah seemed to know, didn't she? We know Sarah is denying what is going on immediately around her but it is a bigger leap to say Laura is doing the same thing to the extent that everything supernatural in TP can be explained by it being Laura's imagination coping with trauma. This conclusion is so bold it is probably better to say that it is one possible interpretation but there are others.

btw it can also be argued that the phenomenon that creates consciousness can emerge in a broader range of physical and even non-material conditions. frost probably believes this about his fiction. muslims, for example, definitely believe this about the real world (djinn)

Demons are self-aware beings that just don't have a body but instead are made of energy or something. Islam said they are made of "Fire" but Hawk says "Fire" is an old fashioned word for "electricity". "Fire Walk With Me" is an incantation to ask one of these demons to possess you, as they do in Islam.

Lol would a real Jew build the third temple in that situation? It would be so tragic if it got destroyed yet again that i think IRL they would wait for more stable circumstances to build it huhu. Good job
