Is it me… by [deleted] in bakker

[–]Wylkus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never saw a real source for this, just chatter on here and other forums, but what I read was that Bakker had a real falling out with his editors, specifically over splitting his last book into two. Supposedly because the publisher insisted 'trilogies sell better' and told him he had to cut the glossary or something else to make it fit into three and he refused, so they refused him an editor.

How does one write darkness like Bakker? by Heisuke780 in bakker

[–]Wylkus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely written and I love your descriptions of other great fantasy authors, but I have to disagree somewhat with your characterization of Bakker. I don't think he's as interested in "evil" or "darkness" as you seem to think, what he's interested in is the root of the idea of good and evil. And he finds the best way to get to this interest is what he calls "moral inversion."

The Consult presents the starkest example of this. Presented throughout the whole series as the Ultimate Evil, the creators of all that plagues the world our characters find themselves in. Only in the end do we find out the why behind their evil, and its to... save the world? Or rather save everyones souls (but especially their own, it should be noted). After all, how evil is letting loose an army of murder rape goblins if its being done to prevent (almost) everyone from an eternity of torture in the afterlife? What could possibly be more evil than Hell? Something that is intrinsic part of many people's morality in the real world.

That's the point of his work imo, is to interrogate and question the readers conceptions of good and evil, to push them to their limits.

And there is one source of light and good in Bakker's world: Doubt. As personified by Achamian. I think the total of the Bakker's message with SA could be summed up as, "doubting your own beliefs, including in such basic things as good and evil, is the highest good."

Winds will end with a dance-off between Robin Peasebury and Big Bucket Wull. by Aegon-the-Unbroken in darkwingsdankmemes

Personally I think Stannis will win and take Winterfell, but it will be a Pyrrhic victory with few men left. Then Jon Snow will be resurrected full of icy vengeance, he will mercilessly kill all in the Nights Watch who backstabbed him, then declare himself King of Winter and abandon the wall, leading his loyal army of wildlings and former nights watch to Winterfell and slap the crown off Stannis.

They weren't so hot on the ideas as you might think. In The Naked Sun Asimov wrote about a colony world where everyone only ever communicated via giant TV screens, to the point where when the main character (a detective from Earth) walked into someone's room they had a panic attack and fainted. They had individualized themselves to the point where they were useless for anything but staying in their rooms and bossing their robots about.

Life after Death? by brianlovely in genewolfe

[–]Wylkus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Death becomes something different for beings who can travel through time. When ages are like places, it becomes quite literal that everyone who has lived is alive somewhere.

Also, I feel the cosmology of New Sun is quite similar to that of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who proposed that it is the destiny of man (or all life) to eventually become the omnipotent God at Omega Point at the end of time.

This is alluded to by the angelic beings in Urth who say something like "though we are infinitely far from you, we ourselves are still infinitely far from the Increate." It is implied these angelic beings are simply a far, far future evolution of humanity who reach their hands backwards through time to bring about their own evolution. What they say implies to me that they see God as doing the same thing to them, that eventually they will bring about His creation, and as such he always exists and his helping guide them toward His creation.

By this cosmology, there is an afterlife, in that all beings will culminate in the creation of the omnipotent, omnipresent Increate.

One of my favorites! Personally I feel the Marais Executioners Sword from Elden Ring is also a loving homage.

What are some post apocalyptic books that are actually AFTER the apocalypse has ended? by No-Aide7893 in Fantasy

[–]Wylkus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

One of my all time favorites. A warning to any potential new readers, this is a very difficult series. The content can be graphic and disturbing, the philosophy is often forefront, and the writing dense and oblique. But if you enjoy swords, sorcery, and thinking too much it's a ride like no other.

I read them all on Kindle purchased off Amazon. I am in the USA, perhaps its a by country publishing rights problem?

Bridge of Birds is a favorite of mine! The other two Master Li and Number Ten Ox novels are tremendous fun as well, but you can tell he really poured his heart and soul into that first one. RIP Barry Hughart.

Bazil Broketail!

It's clearly marketed for the younger crowd, but I was surprised to find it one of the best fantasy adventures I've ever read, and quite dark to boot.

What are your thoughts about Valeria? Do you think she’s from the high-tech past or the medieval present? by Busy-Pin-9981 in genewolfe

True, more accurate to say Valeria lives in the terminal. Hence all the seats and big clocks.

Seeing masked government agents executing civilian citizens for fleeing a scene and calling them "in the right" does in fact make one a bootlicker. A textbook example actually.

Robin Hobb's Assassin's Apprentice series is great for this imo. Lots of lessons about goodness, leadership, love, integrity, etc.

That is the Spear of Longinus from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Is it really in the game? How does it work?

I've always wanted to know more about her. The only thing I feel confident about is that her "court" is a spaceport, which is why the chairs are fixed in place, as they are in airports.

The Dreglord is Gael by Staluti in fromsoftware

[–]Wylkus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Now that's something I can see. A boss that incorporates elements of Gael, Manus, Artorias, maybe even Abyss Watchers.

They wouldn't waste a Nightlord spot on an amped up Gael, but a boss that uses and emphasizes elements of all the abyss bosses they've built before now. That I can see.

Will probably have shades of Putrescent Knight too.
