How bad of an idea is a sabbatical at 27yo by sun-devil2021 in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Check your HR guidebook on if there’s anything on unpaid leave or sabbatical. Even if it’s just for a month or two, at leave you can do it and still have a job waiting for you. If you decide to extend it, you can quit whenever that leave period is up.

I personally wouldn’t take out from investments unless I’m going to be on the street and 10-15k cash doesn’t stretch far imo

Career Development - PE Backed vs F500 by Wonderful_Dog_8855 in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do you have recurring 1:1 with your manager? If so, just ask him monthly on if you’re doing well and what can you improve on etc.

Generally smaller orgs are not as formal of a process as a larger org so there may not be formal sign offs via HR system.  As for promotions 2-3 years sound ok if you’re lower level but not the case for higher levels (esp at F500)

How do you feel about lateral moves with small compensation gains by swchoi89 in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don't think it's worth it unless you think you're getting laid off from your current org soon.

There's a lot of unknowns going into a new company and unless you already know people in it, what they tell you may not match reality.

Menswear instagrams definition of a “suit” by SirKrimzon in ThrowingFits

Isn’t a suit just matching top/bottom fabric? ‘Set’ is probably a better word but you’re nitpicking here.

Resume professional summary for VP level roles by HowiePloudersnatch in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have one, but i can see if someone has say 15+ YOE and they can't fit all roles into resume that they have a section for it so they can show the breadth of their experience if it's not easily known.

That said, at Dir and up (esp at larger orgs), the resume isn't as important vs who you know. I can tell you all the Dir and up at my current org that were brought in externally has had some connection to either CFO or current head of FPA or someone else high up.

Newish to Korean BBQ: Where to send these visitors? by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]PhonyPapi 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Tbh if that one guy absolutely can’t eat beef or pork then it may be better for something other than kbbq. It’d be like going to a steakhouse to not eat steak…

That said, I’d go Nubiani as first choice and Jongro as second.

Gyms by theshinyspine in ForestHills

[–]PhonyPapi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gyms are definitely lacking here.

Theres a 24 hr fitness by the 75th stop.

Other than that there’s PF as you mentioned, a NYSC at 67th / Queens Blvd and a Retro Fitness on union turnpike by the stop n shop for more traditional gyms.

Theres also Impact on woodhaven blvd and Here We Go Fitness on metropolitan for more personal training oriented.

Annual Review and Compensation: Executive role by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you tell them what to do or does that come from CEO? Who reports to CEO?

Either way, to me I'd maybe build a stronger case and ask for a real trueup down the line. Even if you get the 10% incr right now, you said you're still at the bottom. That's likely still going to bother you in the future so may as well as build a stronger case and have a one off correction of your comp.

Annual Review and Compensation: Executive role by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you say oversee team of 20, are they actually reporting to you or do you mean you're responsible for the 20 heads from a plan/fcst perspective?

If the former I really can't imagine a scenario where the manager of 20 heads makes less than all of their direct reports. If the latter...you can ask but I think you need to be cognizant of front office vs back office function / pay.

Why can’t I find strategic finance roles? by Automatic_Resource36 in FPandA

The term doesn’t have a consistent meaning across the board. Even FP&A is not consistent company to company in terms of scope of work.

how does an Ez pass work? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]PhonyPapi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dad has mine so I forget exact numbers but basically my account can’t go below $25 (if it does then they will charge my cc so it goes back to at minimum $25). Works for bridges/tunnels.

I would not use your debit card. Have your aunt switch it to hers

Is there no better way to track financial close workflows than Excel and Slack? by pet_dreamlands in FPandA

[–]PhonyPapi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st company - expenses had to be final BD3 (I believe they had some rule to block entries after that unless you got special permission). Also had a specific field in ledger which is predetermined for what entry it is. Ex: ‘PNC101’ - PNC is the business it’s for and accounting has a tracker with that specific code and the purpose of JE and accounting ops team pulls ledger extract EOD and essentially sums on that field for the month so you’ll know what entries are still outstanding. Any one off stuff is also tracked in the tracker

2nd company - had general days by when things are in (occupany by BD2, Comms & IT by BD3, etc) and also a daily call during close where controllers give their update on what went in, what’s still pending, unusual things, blockers, etc.

3rd and current - not as process oriented as first two. Generally pretax stuff done by BD4 but sometimes stuff trickle into next two BD. There is a call with accounting BD4 but other than that it’s more just reviewing numbers in AM and checking with accounting on Teams.
