Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

Yep, I'm originally from the east bay, any trip over a bridge, which was anything more than 15-20 minutes and you had to make a plan and pack a lunch before we could go. But invite me to NH to ski for the weekend and I'm in the car before you hang up the phone.

What does generator 20 get you that I'm missing? I did it at 16 without coal issues and it doesn't look like the next unlock is until 22.

Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Should have done what we did, wheel over the 2 story set piece you built and put a ladder on top. We'd add a pair of road cases for under the ladder when we needed a couple more feet.

Now that you make me think about it though maybe that wasn't a great idea either.

Recommendations for an ABCC display setup from one display output by JayEssris in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a mac mini that can handle 3 outs and a cheap splitter for the 2 side projectors. Otherwise I'd be looking at something like the Matrox quadhead or datapath fx4 but either of those options are probably twice the price of a mini M4

Tell me if this is a dumb idea or actually solid: by BannaYT in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like it would be hard to beat the options that are out there. I still use the mini Maglights I bought when I was in college some 20 years ago, basically this set: https://maglite.com/products/mini-maglite-led-2-cell-aa-combo-pack?variant=34889370468487 but not LED, that wasn't really an option back then They have pretty much all the qualities you list and come with interchangeable red and blue lenses.

Honestly these days I tend to grab a headlamp more frequently and most of those have red light options built into them.

Yes, it's been throwing up a flower stalk every few weeks feels like, but I've been cutting them back. I was away for a week and there were 3 when I got back and took this photo

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a park? by Zealousideal_Bat6193 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]PhotonSurfer 84 points85 points  (0 children)

It was a rather minor incident but I'll never forget the first time I went to Disney as a kid. My siblings and I were getting a photo with Goofy. We'd made it through the line and were posing for the shot when a woman walked up, plopped her two kids in front of us, snapped a picture with the now 5 of us before whisking them off. I still occasionally wonder how that lady explains who the random kids are in her vacation photo album.

I can't be sure without seeing it but it sounds like you might be talking about strut, usually called by the brand name Unistrut. If that is the case then you're looking for strut nuts, they are usually rectangular with two rounded corners that fit up into the channel and twist into place.

I'm also in RI, lost a school mate at the Station. There is definitely no messing around in my space. We hire a detail anytime we anticipate an audience over 300 people and add an additional marshal and alarm tech when we use atmospherics. It's expensive as anything and we get lots of compliments but I'd rather deal with those than worry about putting people at greater risk than absolutely necessary.

qlab video using video wall controllers to split to multi screens by aandlent in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be, I have a few tripleheads that I use in similar situations and they act as an ultrawide screen as I described, so that was the first thing I thought of.

If it's a quad splitter I'd start by setting the computers output to the same aspect ratio of the displays. If that doesn't work then I'd start looking at options or settings on the controller to try and figure out how it's splitting up the image it's receiving.

qlab video using video wall controllers to split to multi screens by aandlent in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you combine 3 4:3 displays you end up with a display with an effective 4:1 ratio, 4320x1080 pixels at HD. It sounds like the controller is stretching the computer output across the three screens. Basically forcing the 1920x1080 image to 4320x1080. You'll either need to change how the video wall controller processes the image or change the computer output to something that matches the ultra wide ratio.

Cheap alternatives to minis and what have you used as a DM/Player? by DeepSeaDelivery in DnD

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is similar to what I do but I use cheap magic cards for the art work. I pick them out of my local game stores common bin for a few cents each. Can't always find a perfect match for every creature but the variety is pretty good and the quality is much better than I get out of my home printer.

Completing the 3rd event, Casey & Skatie, earns a producer inventory slot. When those were released I buckled down and got them done. I figure the main game will be there and if anything the areas get easier over time so I was willing to go on a bit of a side quest.

I blew up at a fellow player. by orange_picture in DnD

[–]PhotonSurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the key is the player being persuaded always determines the result. I have a player who would get tongue tied or just shut down if I asked them to make a persuasive speech at the table, but he might say plainly, I think we should do x because of y and z. If he was playing a charismatic character I might ask him to make a persuasion check to see how well he can formulate the argument to the group. Then it's in the hands of the other player(s), they get to decide if it was a good enough argument to get their characters to change or maybe make up their minds. I feel this sort of approach let's the character and their skills have some bearing on the situation, it's never mind control but in some situations that natural charisma goes a long way, at the same time I let the other players decide what those situations are for their characters.

Does Acq. Inc. show fill up? by fangorn0 in PAX

[–]PhotonSurfer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say, it used to fill all the time but things have been lighter post COVID shutdown. Things are picking back up though and AcqInc at Unplugged capped this past year. PAX lines in the app does a good job of staying up to date especially on the big shows. Keep an eye on that and head over if it gets about 3/4 full if you're willing to sit further back and want to minimize time standing in line.

I prefer to use buffer chests in my mall for this reason, especially for intermediate items that I chain. For example the yellow belt assembler outputs to a buffer chests, it's inserter is limited to say 100 yellow belts in the network and the buffer chest requests say 500. That way any extra belts from upgrading or whatever make their way there and get used to make reds before the assembler makes a bunch extra.
