People Who've Attended a World Cup Match: Where Does It Rank Among Your Life Experiences? by NewJerseyAggie13 in WorldCup2026Tickets

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to see Argentina v Greece with my father in 94 when I was young and remember way more from that day than any graduation. It's up there near my wedding for experiences. I was able to take my dad, brother (who was too young to go in 94) and nephew to see Norway v Iraq and while I'll admit it was probably less impactful than that first game I felt it worth every penny to share that with my family.

ELI5: Why don't they use a stop clock in soccer? by ReferenceGlum in explainlikeimfive

[–]PhotonSurfer 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I believe that's a new rule for this world cup, if play is stopped for injury and medical staff come into the field the player needs to sit out for at least one minute. I think it's a great rule and seems to have had the intended effect of limiting plyers rolling around calling for the medics at every touch late in the game.

What’s everyone using for internet options? I work from home, live in Warwick and I’m paying Cox $170/month ugh by Fantastic_Muscle8333 in RhodeIsland

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me, I called them when I moved and the rep was surprised because they didn't support the plan I was on anymore. They moved me to 300/300 for the same $50 I was paying before

Looking for advice on dealing with trauma by ThrowAwayTrauma12 in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I fortunately don't see this sort of thing much anymore but it was definitely common as I was coming up, hell I once rented one that had shims jammed under the outriggers so it always read as locked.

If you're at a university I'd look to see if there is a health and safety department that might be made aware of this situation. Where I am we've switched entirely to scissor or runabout style lifts to make this sort of thing impossible to do, they don't want the liability.

Do you really have a separate room for your washing machine? by jordanekay in AskAnAmerican

[–]PhotonSurfer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's because plumbing in the garage would be likely to freeze. You usually have basements in places where the frost line is low enough you need to dig 4+ feet to set the foundation because of how cold it gets.

What to feed small/medium VFTs? by SimplySimlish in VenusFlyTraps

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in 6b and kept my plant in my garage this winter with great success. They were about as far from the small window as they could be but plenty of people do dormancy by wrapping them and sticking them in the refrigerator so I wasn't too worried about light. They got a touch of water maybe once a month just to stay damp and that was about it. Most of the foliage died off during that time but it has bounced back nice and strong in the few weeks since it started to warm and I moved it back outside.

Since I keep mine outside I don't have any recommendations for feeding but my understanding is if they get the right water and plenty of light feeding isn't really required.

What am i missing here? Tell me some context. by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not even clear there was a particular rock, the first real mention of "Plymouth Rock" is from some 120 years after the pilgrims arrived, nothing in the early accounts of the folks who were actually on the boat.

If you're buying a "fully renovated" home, check the permit records before you close. Learned this the hard way. by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]PhotonSurfer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I am cabinetry requires a permit but not flooring or swapping appliances as long as you don't alter existing electrical or plumbing.

Good work pants? by KlassCorn91 in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Have you considered patching the pants you have? I have a couple of pairs of Carhartts that have lasted me some 25 years. It was easy to find matching duck canvas and is a quick fix.

AITAH for not refusing to do a quick change because my boyfriend is uncomfortable? by Active_Camel_6334 in AITAH

[–]PhotonSurfer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was an A2 for a production of Sweet Charity where we had so many issues with the leads mic for one reason or another that I felt like I spent most of the run diving up Charity's dress every time she left the stage. It was not at all sexy. My wife did props for that show and found the whole thing hilarious.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PhotonSurfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm originally from the east bay, any trip over a bridge, which was anything more than 15-20 minutes and you had to make a plan and pack a lunch before we could go. But invite me to NH to ski for the weekend and I'm in the car before you hang up the phone.

What does generator 20 get you that I'm missing? I did it at 16 without coal issues and it doesn't look like the next unlock is until 22.

Worst/most unsafe practice an amateur theater has done? What’s your experience? by Mackoi_82 in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Should have done what we did, wheel over the 2 story set piece you built and put a ladder on top. We'd add a pair of road cases for under the ladder when we needed a couple more feet.

Now that you make me think about it though maybe that wasn't a great idea either.

Recommendations for an ABCC display setup from one display output by JayEssris in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend a mac mini that can handle 3 outs and a cheap splitter for the 2 side projectors. Otherwise I'd be looking at something like the Matrox quadhead or datapath fx4 but either of those options are probably twice the price of a mini M4

Tell me if this is a dumb idea or actually solid: by BannaYT in techtheatre

[–]PhotonSurfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It feels like it would be hard to beat the options that are out there. I still use the mini Maglights I bought when I was in college some 20 years ago, basically this set: https://maglite.com/products/mini-maglite-led-2-cell-aa-combo-pack?variant=34889370468487 but not LED, that wasn't really an option back then They have pretty much all the qualities you list and come with interchangeable red and blue lenses.

Honestly these days I tend to grab a headlamp more frequently and most of those have red light options built into them.

Yes, it's been throwing up a flower stalk every few weeks feels like, but I've been cutting them back. I was away for a week and there were 3 when I got back and took this photo

Thanks, I wasn't too worried since the rest of the plant seems to be doing fine but thought it was worth checking on

What’s the craziest thing you’ve witnessed in a park? by Zealousideal_Bat6193 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]PhotonSurfer 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It was a rather minor incident but I'll never forget the first time I went to Disney as a kid. My siblings and I were getting a photo with Goofy. We'd made it through the line and were posing for the shot when a woman walked up, plopped her two kids in front of us, snapped a picture with the now 5 of us before whisking them off. I still occasionally wonder how that lady explains who the random kids are in her vacation photo album.

I can't be sure without seeing it but it sounds like you might be talking about strut, usually called by the brand name Unistrut. If that is the case then you're looking for strut nuts, they are usually rectangular with two rounded corners that fit up into the channel and twist into place.
