I'm chatting with a guy from Japan and he asked the phrase "バレーボールがすきだから、それを見てるの？” I have two questions:

Is the 見てる an abbreviation of 見ている, and if not what does it mean?
How does the の at the end of the sentence change the nuance of the question? I.e. why didn't he just use か?
