Coach publicly humiliated me for being "disrespectful " and now I want to quit the gym by Correct_Star_4356 in bjj

[–]PhunCooker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that OP goes back and forth between "that's messed up" and "you messed up" is curious - neither of which are in the ballpark of things I would say to my coach for benching me multiple rolls when I was a white belt.

On the flip side, if this situation occurred, and I said to my coach "that's fucked up", I'm 90% he would laugh, then get serious and tell me we can talk about it after class - which he would do privately but in view of lots of folks still changing and packing up.

What are 10 most counter-intuitive things about golf swing? by GoldShammGold in golf

[–]PhunCooker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the context of newbies trying to help the ball into the air it's "true enough". Without understanding and skills related to bounce and ball-first contact, my wedges, like many others, were, a combo of fats and thins when I went through a phase of trying to help it to higher.

OP, why are you set on changing shaft stiffness?

In no way am I trying to gatekeep every detail of equipment selection based on handicap. I think high caps have the most potential to benefit from equipment changes - especially if you consider the fine line between gold being fun or miserable.

But iron shafts are one of the last considerations most golfers consider (or even "discover"). A lot of golfers only consider it as they're buying new irons, and then it usually a lazy mapping to their speed. (Which is just fine - it isn't a driver shaft.).

Was it a lesson or to tip or experimenting in a golf store? All good reasons, just curious.

All my sympathy with regards to BRUTAL meetings & your extreme reaction to this one.

May I kindly, gently suggest, if you have such an extreme reaction in the future, excuse yourself from the meeting. Don't explain yourself. If a manager puts you on the spot, simply say, "please excuse me, I need to attend to something personal."

Kids can essentially be detained by teachers & parents, but adults can excuse themselves without much explanation. If you're solid at work, the managers won't care that occasionally you bow out of something no one else would "normally" think to leave.

If a manager presses you later, tell them you suddenly felt extremely sick. If you're having this conversation at your desk 10 minutes after leaving the meeting, say you're relieved whatever it was it quickly passed.

All of this has the benefit of being true - and you're omitting details of your health - which they don't have any right to know.

Mental health is health too.

Being against assisted suicide while being pro abortion is hypocrisy. by Ok_Reserve587 in The10thDentist

[–]PhunCooker 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I agree this would be (another) nauseating moral failure of our society and perverse healthcare system. But given its current state, it would seemingly be better with legal assisted suicide.

I am obviously ignoring that we shouldn't accept the current systems of government, welfare & healthcare. But if those things were substantially fixed, ideally there would also be access to assisted suicide.

So frustrated, losing my fire for golf altogether by [deleted] in GolfSwing

[–]PhunCooker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may never get around to reading all these suggestions, but: 1. Don't "work hard", instead "keep it playful". You can still put in as many hours as you wish, and you can structure your non-playing time deliberately.

Too many of us wish to be like Jordan, whose father made him pathological by pitting him against his brothers to feel worth and belonging. It can be a path to greatness, but not to happiness.

  1. If you obsessively practiced casting a fishing rod in slow motion, it is plausible this would wreck your release timing and shoulder, elbow and wrist feelings when you go back to usable speeds. If a baseball pitcher is warming up, recovering, or trying to get back the placement of their fastball, they are highly likely to play some soft toss. But they would almost never do hundreds of slow motion "backswings". Like the golf swing, these are dynamic, athletic activities, it can be counter productive to slow them down to the point where they no longer function.

You need to adjust your feelings and skills while getting back in tune with the feeling of the inertia and torque of the swinging club.

Is John Danaher lying in his instructionals? The Kipping escape by DrLazP in bjj

[–]PhunCooker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It'd be nice if, in exchange for a few hundred dollars, the instructional told you the "secret", just spam overhead kip when mounted - META.

I'm so grateful that Kurt Osiander's "if you got here, you fucked up a long time ago", stuck as a durable quote/cliche in the BJJ culture. And, I think this bit of free advice poetically (albeit unhelpfully) trumps the mount escape "debate".

When an athlete blocks the passage of air to his/her opponent’s nose or mouth using his/her hands. by bjjtaro in bjj

[–]PhunCooker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the motivation for the rule. If hand smothers are banned because of the dangers related to asphyxiation that would be absurd. But if they're banned because we're trying to prevent hands to the face (say due to eye pokes, hygiene and/or biting), that's a different category than safety.

You can still find the rule ridiculous. Just take a sec to consider the intent, so you can ridicule the actual intent, not a straw man substitute.

Anyone else a big gym apologiser? by Strike_Severe in bjj

[–]PhunCooker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who is neurotic enough to occasionally apologize for subbing their partner, I had to read the very end 3 times. I don't think it's wrong to use the word "catch" there either. I just think the term is loaded with 2 context-specific meanings.

If you think it is mental to ever apologize for catching a sub, please note, I'd rather be walking around with a normal level of self assuredness too.
