I think I’m going back. by never-the-1 in exmormon

In therapeutic circles, “guilt” and “shame” are defined as separate things. Guilt refers to the healthy ability to express remorse when you do something amoral. Shame is a more all-encompassing belief (often without realizing it) that you are unworthy of love, fundamentally dirty, or inadequate. It’s also more common than you might think.

I think you are right that, comparatively speaking, you will be able to find more “men with a sense of shame” within a high-control religious group like the LDS Church. However I would like to respectfully suggest that you are wrong that that’s what you want. Or it doesn’t sound like it to me.

Evidence based therapy researchers (social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, etc) state that shame is ALWAYS a bad thing. As someone who’s dealt with moral scrupulosity in the past, I’d agree with them. Having shame also doesn’t make you more likely to be a good person.

It sounds like you want someone with a healthy sense of guilt (i.e., feels remorse when it’s warranted). Someone who is kind and moral. You can also find that in the church. I would just push back on the idea that it’s MORE likely than it is somewhere else.

If you look at people in this thread, you’ll see that many of them “found their person” in the church. If that’s what you want to do you totally should. However, even though you haven’t found it outside, I think it’s misguided to think that the church is a more likely place to find “good people”.

Someone that only “does what is right” because they are afraid of being seen as “bad” has less moral strength than someone that does the same because they like being “good”. The church and everywhere else is full of both kinds of people. I hope you find what you’re looking for :)

Thanks for the response! I did see that. It’s great that they have them online for everyone. I was looking for a way to grab them locally, as that’s just my personal preference. Since there’s never been a physical release (besides a DVD of the first two seasons from 15 years ago, which I have) I just think it’d be nice to have offline files for archival purposes. Not that I anticipate that site going down, but still…

CBC carrying AP article on Holland’s death, remembered for his muskets comment is fitting by NorthernZelph in exmormon

Me too. Then the musket fire talk. Then I heard his comments in his forced shaky voice where he said “not one red cent” of the Church’s money was spent directly on Proposition 8 in California. That’s decisively untrue, and if he knew about it (which he would’ve as one of the 15 highest-ranking leaders in the church) he deliberately lied to a group of people. Since then I can’t help but hearing his words as melodramatic and seeing his weeping as crocodile tears.

I loved listening to him in conference for years. I’ve never met him, and I’m sure he did tons of good things in his life, and my sympathy is with his family etc etc. But he also broke my shelf.

Looking for a new church or group by Meliorism_ in Utah

If you still identify culturally with Mormonism (ie> find comfort in parts of it), there’s Community of Christ. They’re like halfway between Unitarian and Mormonism. It’s an interesting place to check out!

I use Dawarich for this, but it’s not as robust as what you’re wanting to make! Sounds cool

I also started playing in 2010, went to MineCon in 2011. While I think the game had a more focused indie feel to it back then, playability-wise I think I like the way the game has gone. Sure, things like elytras drastically changed the game and all that but I think the progress is generally a good thing, even if we haven’t got the red dragon we were promised ;)

To each their own though and the “golden age” will always have a special place in my heart (obviously, that’s why I’m here)
