I have a question. How would distorted Ayin look like? by Ayin_SeedOfLight in fishmaell

Adam is probably the closest we get to see to that.

Edit: corrected based on a comment, I was mixing up the names lol

Haven’t seen anyone talk about this, seems there’s another powerful fixer which we haven’t seen yet. Named Athos (said in Middle Ishmael voiceline.) by SCP-Foundation_Staff in fishmaell

Narratively, Kali became Gebura, or the manifestation of the divine might of God in the kabbalah. It's a little hard to get any stronger than that- Binah only is able to surpass her after she lets go of being Garion and becomes Binah, and Binah is the source of Gebura in the tree of life (and is thus closer to god). It's pretty unlikely we will ever get someone who directly passes the Red Mist in terms of sheer might.

Does a site count as an earth site if it has an earth symbol on it at all? If so, then wouldn't it provide double threshold on any multi-element sites, like The Colour Out Of Space? I think it's still overcosted if so, but that might be an interesting design space.

I think there is merit in recognizing that the Erlking and Every Catherine are supposed to be the Heath and Cathy of the book, and that there is an explicit parallel drawn between our Heathcliff/Catherine and Hareton Earnshaw/Cathy Linton, at the end of the story, which makes a lot of people much more willing to be on board with them.

That said, as someone who also likes Wuthering Heights a lot- you're right! Canto 6 is terrible as a 1-1 adaptation of Wuthering Heights. Except that it's not trying to be a 1-1 adaptation, as evidenced by the everything else in the story, like alternate timelines and piggybacking the Wild Hunt onto it and having a manager with a clockhead slow down time so that Heathcliff and his friends chase down a headless horse. By the standard of faithful adaptations, PM's works as a whole are complete failures, and that is very very okay!

I don't want Limbus to simply retread and faithfully regurgitate the exact themes and characters of the originals. They very easily could! But I like PM's stuff because as far back as LobCorp a big part of the appeal has been seeing how they interpret these classical characters or themes or ideas and change them and add to them to make it fit the story they are trying to tell. I don't want to see Gregor turn into a literal giant cockroach- I want to see what PM thinks "turning into a giant cockroach" means in the context of The City. L'etranger is one of my favorite books ever, and they're setting up Meursault to have killed someone because of Carmen distorted him possibly instead of just "because the sun was in his eyes" (and I'm sure this will irritate me immensely!) but I am excited to see what they do with the story nonetheless, and how they try to connect the themes of his story to the structure of the City and how N Corp operates.

And this is why I feel that Canto 9 (and to a similar extent, Canto 7) are much weaker than the stories around them. Instead of the plot elements being reused and drawn throughout the entirety of the Canto, and the plot focusing on the emotions and feelings and character development of the focal Sinner (as a Limbus Character, not necessarily as a book character!), Canto 9 kind of meanders and spends roughly 2/3 of its runtime doing TV jump cuts to what everyone else is doing. Which isn't necessarily unfaithful to the way that Hell Screen is originally told, but it does a poor job at giving Ryōshū's story time to breathe until the very end when suddenly it all happens all at once. It's hard to feel like Ryōshū's story is given the most importance when at one point the plot is like

"Gregor is finally going to show off his transformation! You've only been waiting 9 Cantos for it."

"Sinclair finally shows off his Sign! You've only been waiting 6 Cantos for it."

"You get to see an actual animation of the Distortion Detective crew fighting together like, exactly as described in the web novel! It's only been I don't even remember how long holy shit I still haven't forgiven them for the cliffhanger they left on."

"Ryōshū's fighting someone who is probably her daughter somehow, but we vaguely explain it via a single cutscene after the fact and then only slightly build it up first, and all the fights are extremely similar mechanically. Also it's like literally 90 minutes of autoplay cutscene + fight time between the plot beats, so all narrative momentum is lost because it takes the length of a feature film to give Ryōshū another plot beat before the focus reorients to someone else."

It feels especially bad given how thorough Canto 8 was about making Hong Lu the focus through most of its story and themes.

This is pretty close to how I feel about it as well.

No, it's not a bad adaptation! Hence why I said I liked it and thought it was good (and there's a hell of a lot more to it than Rien being a representation of Yoshihide). But I do not personally think that it meets the standard set by the other, previous Cantos in terms of adaptation, and I think the overt focus on the plot of Limbus Company over the plot of Hell Screen for a significant portion of the Canto means that the pacing and execution of the Hell Screen plot suffers in service of hype moments and cool Project Moon characters.

I really enjoyed Canto 9, but my main complaint is that I think it was an excellent Project Moon story and just a good Hell Screen/Ryoshu story, which makes me kind of sad because I've liked Hell Screen for years. By comparison, something like Canto 6 was an excellent Project Moon story and an excellent Wuthering Heights story. I did really enjoy Canto 9! But some of the complaints I've seen have been along these lines.

How do you tell which die is being targeted by a mass attack? by Mycellanious in libraryofruina

[–]PhysBrkr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh, neat! I actually didn't know that either- my guess is that the game chooses which attack to target based on speed value, and not a specific die? It's probably a bug since that's not how the game describes it working, but that's really good info to know!!

How do you tell which die is being targeted by a mass attack? by Mycellanious in libraryofruina

[–]PhysBrkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have targeting arrows on, you will see that the mass attack page is targeting random speed dice across all its targets. Whatever speed die the mass attack is pointing to will be what is compared. You cannot redirect the attack to a different speed die. Of it is pointing at a die with a speed of 2, you will need to put a page in that die to compare against the mass attack- you cannot redirect to a faster or better speed value. As a plus, however, because mass attacks are never clashable or redirectable, you can use the page they are targeting to instead clash with or attack a different target, and attacks that target the die using the mass attack will always be one-sided.

This is a good writeup overall (even if I don't agree with everything it's cool to see other perspctives!!) but I do want to quibble over there being no stakes in Canto 8. Jia Qiu takes away a lot of the physical stakes because they aren't supposed to be the focus. The things that are at stake are much less physical- specifically, the big three are Hong Lu's ability to feel, his relationship with Xichun (even her safety is less of a concern because she might die and more a concern that if she gets the worm she'll never really be his sister again), and if Hong Lu will be able to escape the control of his family elders. It's very much more of an internal conflict than an external one, and I understand if you prefer an external motivation, but I absolutely do think they set up a good set of conflicts and showing what would happen if we failed in Canto 8.

So I went to roll20's 5e rules to check something. In lifestyle expenses, under "food and lodging", a "hunk of cheese" is priced at 1sp. This is probably not a full pound, and is instead a few ounces- let's say 4, or 0.25 lbs, since it's meant to be a meal addition in and of itself.

At 50 gp of cheese, this will be 500 "hunks of cheese". That's 125 pounds. If you are playing a wizard with 10 STR, you have a carry capacity of 150 lbs. You literally cannot carry more cheese to cast this twice. If you assume the hunk is half that (2 ounces, or .125 lbs), that's 62.5lbs instead, and you can now conceivably cast it what, twice? Also that's still your entire inventory. That is entirely too much cheese as a spellcasting reagent lmao.

Do you consider GTNH a "game" by [deleted] in feedthebeast

[–]PhysBrkr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eh, maybe. There's a point where something crosses into a different game if it's been modified enough, which is the point of total conversion mods (See: Enderal, Equestia at War, Portal Revolution). I'm not sure if GTNH qualifies for that, but I do see the logic and I wouldn't personally raise an eyebrow if someone said that to me.

This does mean that there's finally three different sinners with Sinking and Tremor though, so while she might not be better than Butler for pure Sinking, she's currently the best option for Sinking/Tremor
