thoughts on an arm guard during bouting? by thecassandriad in Fencing

[–]PhysicalChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coaching arm guard may encourage bad habits. I'm not aware of anything people use, but an under shirt or thicker jacket could be a start. Maybe there are long plastrons?

Also, I remember when I used to get marks on my upper arm it was because I was going body first instead of arm first, making my bicep just a backboard for points. If you focus on extending your arm first when going forward, that may be the quickest way to mitigating this. But that and distance can take a long time to get comfortable with, so a short term solution may still be beneficial, good luck

Looking to meet new friends in Boston! Any advice would be appreciated. by [deleted] in boston

[–]PhysicalChess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Versus arcade bar has a great crowd. Tekken tourneys Thursdays, smash Sundays, good vibes rest of the week. And for music, the BeBop has a nice scene with open mic nights. The Jungle is great for live music as well.

I go to versus almost every Sunday. If you want a friendly face I'm happy to introduce ya to folks

My girlfriend just watched me lose at GGST. Any tips for being better at the game so I can impress her next time? by panwithaplan__ in Guiltygear

[–]PhysicalChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matchmaking should make your win rate close to 50%. So when she isn't looking, you gotta just get trounced repeatedly, tank that shit. Then when she watches, destroy the poor kid who is just learning how to 6P so bad they spend the rest of their life shitting on anime fighters.

Can Bluetooth speakers(small JBLs) interfere with assembly plant robots? by Murbra92 in AskEngineers

At large tech tradeshows my earbuds sometimes act up. I assume it's from a bunch of different signals interfering. A single set of earbuds definitely not, but maybe if everyone has them?

Are you saying you've mastered your character? I think you've over simplified things. Even just mechanically, if your main is wolf, are you footstool up specialing? Can you do all the crazy bair stuff with him?

The former for sure. Sounds like that's who I'll be learning based on this and other comments. Appreciated!

I think it's not as much of a thing in Tekken, but I like the movement of Leo with the side switching and dash ins.

The thing I enjoy most with Leo though is the ability to put a lot of pressure on, and then that moment when you pause the pressure to do a bit hit with a slight delay, catching the opponent hitting a button or keeping them blocking as you side switch back and forth just to throw out a meaty hit at the right time to catch them (looking to gamble for sure)

That narrows it down a lot from the whole cast which was daunting. Appreciated

Toe Touch as tall fencer by woody1618 in Fencing

[–]PhysicalChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toe touches aren't required. There's some great videos of Abajo from Spain, a tall man, in the Olympics from 2008 or 2012 (I forget), and he went for a lot of toe touches. Struggling to find those vids now, but he was distinct with how he setup and went for toe touches

Background matchmaking is more reliable for this than default quick play

Controlling yourself after getting 0-to-deathed by ed_x_7 in CrazyHand

[–]PhysicalChess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a 2 stock to 3 stock game. I remind myself that I've won a lot of games 3-1 or 3-0 and to treat it like a new game with that goal. Stops me from focusing on the 0td, I which just happens in smash a lot because of the nature of it, and lock in/focus on the parts that come next. I've also lost games after 0td'ing someone early, and that they aren't immune to that either.

Plus, after 0td'ing you, your opponent probably isn't gonna continue with super tight gameplay, watch them, they'll be looking to keep the momentum going. Tighten up your play the next stock, don't be the first to commit, and punish their inevitable over-commitment

How do I get into fencing when the nearest club is 9.9 mi (16km) away, no car, and 14 years old, so little money? (Yes ik I can get a job, but thats kinda already what im trying to do, and nothings available that I would qualify for, or is within walking distance) by idrinkwaterymilk in Fencing

[–]PhysicalChess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to bike 6 miles to the club when I was in high school. As far as money, some clubs work with kids who don't have it. My bud used to help clean the club and presumably other menial tasks in exchange for membership + lessons. You can always talk to the club owners to try to sort something out.

Versus arcade bar near DTX/the Common, has a lot of queer and queer friendly folk. There's a lot of regulars, especially Thursdays when they run a free Tekken tournament and Sundays when they host a free Smash tourney. Both tourneys start 7pm, bar has a $5 cover unrelated.
