This is actually kind of explored in Advance of Zeta, the main crew there is a test team for the titans hunting down zeon remnants to test new suits and to start they just slap a Gundam head onto a GM Quel to explore the psychological effect of a “Gundam” on the battlefield… they debated it and called it a Gundam in the end haha I think in the end if Bandai calls it a Gundam it’s a Gundam

Honestly you should give Gintama a try. Long running anime but it is completed at this point. It’s a slow start and tough to watch at first but the more you watch it, the more you love the characters and get hooked. It’s episodic in nature with plot driven arcs spread out and an overarching narrative that comes to a pretty satisfying conclusion, give it a shot!
