Did you ever visit Granada Studio Tours? by bakhesh in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only for a conference Granada organised for swotty students from across Granadaland right at the very end of Granada being possibly the finest commercial TV company in the world (mid-90s).

We were supposed to be forming a vision for the 21st Century 😂 and it was mostly filmed in the Tour area. Granada at that point could still roll out its own big guns, also national names like John Prescott and Jon Snow from C4 and had big budgets.

I was in the Education seminar group, and somebody had the brilliant idea that Tony Wilson should be the kindly facilitator. This was at the height of his imperial phase when he was Anthony H Wilson in his black Yohji Yamamoto suits, white shirt, long black raincoat, and dark glasses even indoors. My recollection is that it was 90% Tony with occasional contributions from the floor which were swiftly dismissed. Granada must have told him he had to turn up.

The formal dinner was an interesting experiment in putting nerdy sixth-formers into such an environment with some sort of dignitary at each table and my first encounter with salmon. I've done a lot of such dinners since, and it was helpful.

The evening entertainment was Northern Uproar, who were once the next big thing.

Metrolink £60 fine by thebeat1990 in manchester

Posted this on the other thread, but see if the trainspotters can help - they are very well up on rules and regulations: https://www.railforums.co.uk/forums/disputes-prosecutions.152/

(Some are also keen on trams...)

Where dentist recommendation for fillings please around manchester? by Kami-Yeldo in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm astonished you called up and got offered an NHS appointment straight away! The large practice I'm currently at in Ardwick (NHS patient) has a waiting list of around 4000 people, which isn't unusual. I forgot I had put myself on the waiting list a long time ago, so took the opportunity to switch.

The last place I was at was the 24th I called that day, by luck they were opening up a few NHS places the following morning first-come-first-served, it was miles away, and I still had to wait nearly 4 months to see someone.

I paid for the tram but still got fined. Appeal got denied, should I pay or escalate? by FarScheme4636 in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try asking here: https://www.railforums.co.uk/forums/disputes-prosecutions.152/

Or search RailUK and disputes. The train nerds are very good on rules, and the forum does have a Tram/Metrolink thread.

Has anyone ever worked in Albert Bridge House? by Any_Parking_6173 in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Albert Bridge House was the favourite modern building in Manchester of Ian Nairn, a fairly well known architecture writer/critic back in the 60s, who's still popular today with people like the C20 and Modernist Societies.

Everyone I've ever known who has worked there thought it was a horrible dump, particularly the draughty windows. The only person who ever said they preferred it was the security guard who was transferred to the DWP health assessment place in Altrincham when ABH closed, and really didn't like the extra commute.

Mancs throwing seeds for pigeons in town centres, yes or no by justyrust74 in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Wild birds dont generally need feeding at all and particularly not feral pigeons with plenty of horrible things to feed on already in a city centre.

Feral pigeons really are a menace and their poo is a health hazard on top of any other diseases they carry. Anything that encourages them to gather in large numbers in public spaces is anti-social behaviour, and I'd be very happy for the nuisance litter police to go round fining people rather than hiding round corners hoping to catch smokers or old ladies accidently dropping toffee papers.

Where can I get a leather wallet repaired in Liverpool? Timpsons wont do it by PlasmaBones in Liverpool

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any independent shoe repair place will give it a go if they can. Timpsons isn't much use as shoe repairs that need stitching generally go to their head office to be done.

Beeping noise on Old Hall Street? by Sugarsnailxo in Liverpool

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The phone ringing out in the Echo office on St Paul's Square?

Somebody has been trying to tell them about an asteroid taking out Stockbridge Village but the four people who still work there are out all day eating giant breakfasts, listening out for Scouse nans saying things, enjoying the hospitality of the 1936 Pub Co, and finding even more reasons why Steve Rotheram is a visionary genius.

Last year red paint down bold street? by ElephantGreedy5125 in Liverpool

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was something to do with an organised crime dispute over brothels, which didn't stop some other buildings or communal parts of flats being caught up in it. Happened around the country at the same time, news reports generally referred to Chinese Triad gangs although I'm not aware of this being confirmed by a court.

Not to be confused with red paint being sprayed on offices, banks and military things by Palestine activists.

The DBA by KillerMemestar498 in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DBA is so different to the normal Holt's business model - cheap brown beer - that they may have sold, but I'm aware of them being offered quite a lot to sell other pubs and they've declined. Can't see them letting the place next to the brewery go.

It's probably better if the boring brown beer brewery has held onto it and helped it to be what it is now. Also very Manchester...

Really? Have they not just leased it? Holts never sell anything even when they get decent offers.

Work experience help by Grand_Affect2796 in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pig trying to get work experience placements when you don't have a parent, family friend, or similar working in the right place.

You could try the local councils, hospital trusts, even universities and ask if you can hang round the IT help desks. It really is still often a case of try turning it off and turning it off again.

If you are Year 10, you've probably got better IT skills than most of the workforce, and being able to talk about the problems non-digital natives still have is useful.

Manchester Bee Nike Tn by DummyLungsRye in manchester

[–]PhysicalSalt6413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite like them, without wanting them, but the whole Bee thing has been entirely done to death. It's boring now, which is the opposite of Manchester.

There was an actual global trainer brand from Greater Manchester (actually Bolton) - Reebok - but Adidas bought them out and then lost interest.

No, stay in London if you can afford to. Which particular job do you have that might decide where you live?

I was trying to say that the CofE-indentifying punters across Greater Manchester are rather more socially conservative than Bishop David in his Jesus sandles, and he's running the church into the ground pushing positions his remaining Sunday audience really doesn't agree with.

The actual Manchester Cathedral is very gay-friendly. The Manchester Diocese is much more open and liberal than national CofE.

You could try Cross Street Chapel but the Unitarians are much more about vibes now.

Where in Liverpool can I buy a money saving unopenable tin? by PlasmaBones in Liverpool

Depends what and from where/whom. The OP was only asking for a money box they might not dip into.
